“Amazing time!!”
Reviewed April 25, 2004

i just got back from the Melia Puerto Vallarta and I had an amazing time!! I had read a few of the reviews and I was beginning to get a little concerned and not sure about the resort, but it turned out to be great. The pool was huge and the grounds were nicely kept really nicely. They had many activities for the whole family and the night shows were pretty fun and entertaining. The food in the buffets were good and so was the food in the restaurants. Although the food was nice, it would be worth going into the town and eating in a restaurant for the experience. It was overall a gorgeous place and I would love to go back.

We just got back on 4/19 after spending 7 days at the Melia. Have to say I was very apprehensive after reading so many negative reviews.
This was my 1st time in Mexico so I was afraid of alot of things. We have three kids: 14, 13 and 10. This hotel has many things going for it - let me start w/the most important for us - the food. They have buffets set up by the pool everyday (kids: hot dogs, fries, burgers, chips), and another one under the big hut w/adult-type food - seafood fajitas, fruit, salads, meats, fish, pizza, pasta, etc. These are the only places to eat during the day (soda machines that dispense into plastic cups are also available here all day). The big hut is a buffet w/waiters constantly asking to get you drinks, kids area is also buffet - no waiters. Kids can bring it back to where you're sitting by the pool. Our kids went to get a burger and brought it to eat by us under the big hut. These areas are open from about 11:00 to 5:00. There are also 3 "reservation" restaurants you can eat at (one time at each place during your stay). This is where you stand in line at the lobby to make your reservation. After eating whenever we wanted, and not being on a schedule, we had dinner around 8:30 each night at these places. We never went to the one where kids are only allowed on Wednesday - menu items didn't really appeal to the kids (or us). The other two places were fabulous. The one at the bottom of the stairs especially! They hand you a wonderful tropical drink (Blue Hawaii) when you walk in, then put the napkin on your lap when you're seated - kids loved it!
Dinner presentation is beautiful! We ordered items w/the sauces on the side for kids and everything was delicious! On the other nights, you'll be eating at the buffet - which changes slightly. There are Mexican offerings, as well as American food, turkey, salmon, pork, lots of fruit (pineapple, cantelope, honeydew, watermelon), salad bar, bread, etc. Kids don't have alot to choose from - sometimes chicken wings, fries. We didn't get tired of it 'til about our 5th night, but we all did okay. We never went elsewhere to eat - we were happy w/what we had - no complaints! If we had to say anything - I guess we wish the kids had a little more choices in the evening. Breakfast was easy - lots to choose from - pancakes, french toast, eggs, sausages, bacon, breakfast tacos, always Mexican offerings (octopus). The lines were never a problem for eggs or omlets - who can complain when someone is making it FOR you? Lots of juice, strong coffee and desserts at every meal. There is coffee, juice and light pastries in the lobby every morning. The resort is absolutely gorgeous, plush and very well maintained.
Employees are all very polite and happy. There are beautiful flowers, well manicured grounds, professional staff and fabulous views of the mountains! Swim up bar (as well as all bars) are very respectful of children as well as adults. They made non-alchoholic margaritas and dacquires just as often as the alchohol kind. We found strange people hung out at the swim up bar more than any other bar, however! Lots of activities all day long - volleyball tournaments, contests for free T-shirts, water aerobics (fun), water polo, etc. Always something to do! Our kids didn't do anything we thought they would do - no rock climbing, archery or shooting range - they were thrilled just to go get a soda whenever they wanted - or an ice cream cone anytime too! Vendors set up right on the sand by the hotel - all very low pressure. Both my daughters had their hair braided - one on the beach (half of her head for $15) and my other one had it done by the pool (whole head $35).
Every Sunday and Wednesday a Mexican Fiesta comes and sets up all kinds of vendor tables near the lobby area and sells souveniers (jewelry is high) but there are affordable things too! It's just fun to look!
Parasailing is on our beach too - my husband did that - very cool ($35). Three of us took the canopy tour - very cool too! I really can't complain about this vacation - we ate whatever we wanted- drank the water at the tables (ice is bagged and brought into the hotel) and never got sick. It 's a great value for the money. My husband wishes the rooms were more updated, but you're not there very much, so it wasn't too terrible - they're clean! We first had a room on the ground floor that had a terrible sewer odor - moved up to the 4th floor for a better view and had no odor! We had friends staying next door at the Marriott - I would never stay there - I thought our grounds were way more lush and beautiful and our pool is huge! No meals at the Marriott, just very expensive restaurant! We had other friends in Cancun at the same time - with what sounded like the same menu! I think all the all-inclusives have the same things offered. It was a terrific value - the whole family loved it - I'm glad I didn't listen to the negative reviews, but I'm not that hard to please - I was thrilled with the whole experience and very sad to leave. Please email me if you have ANY questions at all wiener@execpc.com. I hope you have a terrific time!

Just got back last night (4-11)and felt I needed to post my thoughts. I couldn't have been happier with my stay. Came with my parents, wife, and with four kids 5,6,12,15. Food was as good as could be expected for mass production. If you're looking for gourmet, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a place where your kids and find and eat what they want, when they want, this is the place. We stayed in a family room (with 6) and were a little crowded, but who stays in the room. We tipped $10 to the housekeeper when we arrived and $2 each day afterward and had fresh flowers every day with unlimited bottled water and extra pillows. We made our plans through Expedia and they had a representative meet us at the airport and steer our novice family through the morass of timeshares and scams. We found Expedia to be really helpful and upfront. The kids club was great. The little ones had a great time and mom and dad got a little extra relaxation at the pool. Drinks were always available and good. Service couldn't have been better. Just keep a handful of 10 peso coins with you at the pool. I've read a lot of complaining about the beach but was pleasantly surprised at how it actually was. Not huge, but good waves for the kids, great parasailing ($30 each for our group), fun bungy trampoline ($3 for 3-5 minutes). We always found that when purchasing things in bulk we cut much better deals. (henna tattoos, hair braiding, bracelets, parasailing) Tip for the first day, get up early and put your towels on your choice pool spot to hold them for later in the morning after breakfast. They go fast. Check out the night shows. We loved them, even though they sometimes got a little cheesy. The mime was great. Saw lots of dolphins from the beach and iguanas working the gardens. If you're an early to bed person, ask for a room away from the disco. It goes pretty late and is pretty loud. If you're a night person, take the kids and head over. Lots of families playing games and hanging out. Another tip, check out the taco and cervaza stand across the street and down the block to the right. 10 peso tacos and 10 peso beers. We loved them. We had dinner at all three reservation restaurants and they were much better than the buffets. Azulejos and Vetrales were great. La Palapa was mediocre but the setting above the beach made up for it. You have to wait in line around 9am for the reservations each day, but the line went fast and we always got the time we wanted. Each restaurant has their signature blended drink and they were great. Make sure to ask for a Mexican coffee with dessert. Watch out for the folks gathered in the lobby each morning. We found them to be very helpful for tips on the resort and things to do in town, but make no mistake, they are there to sell you a timeshare. They come off like concierges at first but then hit you for the 90 minute presentation in exchange for discount coupons. We didn't take the bait but did get great information from them on things to do in PV. For us, the bottom line was that the convenience for our family far outweighed any minor drop off in food quality. For a family we couldn't have asked for a better spot. Without kids, you may not feel as strongly about the benefits of the place. Tip well and often and you will find the friendly staff will bend over backward to make your stay memorable. Feel free to contact me with questions.

We stayed at the Melia from April 4th till April 11th. We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Melia. The property is fabulous with outstanding service and very friendly staff. The pool is huge and has a great swim-up bar. Water volleyball was a lot of fun, esp. the tequilla shots after every goof-up.

This is a very kid friendly resort. Even my 1 year old had a great time in the pool. The evening shows were great! My 5 year old was always excited about the evening shows since all kids got to participate.

We will definitely go back.

8 adults and 8 kids spent April 3-10 at the Melia and we will be returning next year. There are a full compliment of activities and you can be as involved as you wish. The food was absolutely great; the kids were totally satisfied at ever meal-the kids programs were top notch.
Tip Arturo at the pool and the beverages will keep coming. If your TV is not good, ask at the desk and it will be fixed immediately. Don't forget to go to the marina one block away, (turn left on the street and go through the orange arches) son-in-law booked a 4.5 hr fishing trip for $140-need to negociate. Make sure you get to the pool early in the morning to reserve your chairs by covering them with towels, flip flops, stuff. People were wonderful. This was a great vacation.

Traveled over springbreak march15-22, Kids loved it. Food was fair to excellent. Property clean and in great shape. Service excellent.
Restaurants required an early reservation in the morning for that evening or you ate at the buffet, which was fine with us. Would definitely return.

March 14th-19th. Overall this is a nice resort. The pool is incredible, and this is a great place to take your kids. Most of the pool is shallow. Great playgroud, and activities for children. Swim up bar was nice, and liquor selection was good. (Equivalent to most mexico all inclusive resorts). The room was ok, eventhough the furnishings were outdated. There was really only one major disappointment: The poor quality, selection, and presentation of the food. (As long as your kids like cold sandwiches & french fries everynight -which is basically the only kids food served at dinner you will be ok) I have stayed at several all inclusive resorts in mexico and I was shocked at how poor the food quality, presentation, and selection was. As long as you can live with the food, this is a good place to stay, especially for what we paid, which was $133 Per night which included tax. One other thing, if you are a beach lover, this is not the place for you. Not a very pretty beach. Luckly I like hanging out by the pool.
