“Management Mistakes”
Reviewed August 27, 2007

The resort is beautiful. Very quiet, there were less than 40 people staying at the resort while we where there. Staff is very helpful and service was excellent.

The rooms were very nice. The bathrooms need updating. The shower pressure was horrible - and went from scalding hot to freezing cold about every 30 seconds. Also - you shower in a hot-tub and must step in and out perching precariously on the slick steps.

Food was ok. The restaurant at Casa Vellas is the best...and would avoid Andreas at the sister resort.

Bar-staff were excellent and very friendly. The evenings we spent with them might have been the highlight of our entire trip.

The one huge blemish on our trip was that we were told as we were checking in that the hotel was doing service work on the air conditioning five days into our seven day stay and that we would have to be moved to the hotel's sister resort mid-stay. We were so tired from our flight we did not object. We also did not know that the sister resort was full of screaming families and rooms that were not as nicely furnished as the Casa Vellas. For our troubles - management promised us an hour spa treatment. We then learned that there was no air conditioning problem - but that they hotel had a large group coming on Thursday and they wanted our room. The large group did come on Thursday and overtook the entire hotel...we even witnessed new guests entering our old room. If they overbooked - fine. Call me in advance and explain the situation and work to make it right. But to lie to my face...

We went to Puerto Vallarta Mexico and stayed at Casa Velas Hotel which is 5 mintues from the airport. The physical part of the resort was beautiful. The restaurants, gardens, lobby, spa, and fitness were all very well maintained. We spent 4300 on this all inclusive for 7 nights and were given a suite with jacuzzi and plunge pool. My husband and I went on our honeymoon here and we are 26 years old.

Hotel Ambiance
The hotel is so quiet. No one stays up past 10:00 anywhere no matter what age. The hotel is super super quiet and does not have any bar really to hang out in during the night. The hotel lobby bar stays open until the last person leaves, however, it is just a small bar with a few chairs and then tables set above the pool which you can sit at. So if you are in it to hang out with your significant other and no one else the ambiance would be good for that. It is so quiet!!!

The Food
The food was terrible in my opinion. I did not like anything. I ate nachos and chips and salsa all week. The fajitas were good though. The restaurant on site was all gourmet food and I did not like one meal there. The serving sizes were so small and the menu never changed enough to make it feel like another restaurant. Person always playing the piano and the restaurant was very prim and proper. The only restaurant onsite and the dress code is khaki pants and a nice shirt for men. Shorts are not allowed for men.

The Drinks
They do not have captain morgan on site anywhere so if you prefer captain you better bring some. I had to drink fufu drinks all week and they don't do much for you after a while. Also, the better you tip the better they pour. Make sure you always ask for extra alchohol bc they don't make anything very strong.

The Town
Puerto Vallarta has alot of Mexican history which they are trying to preserve. The downtown area is nice and if you are in the mood to party you can find plenty of bars to do so. The beach is just like the Pacific Ocean in Southern California so don't expect anything more. We did not even snorkel bc the water was not very clear.

Overall
We could have went to Vegas and stayed at the nicest hotel and ate at the best restaurants for a similar price. For us the best part was just being able to spend 7 nights with each other and no one bugging us. If you are considering this resort I would not recommend it. I would look into Secrets Capri Mayan Riviera! Best place we have stayed so far in Mexico. Casa Velas was just okay for me.

The husband and I stayed at Casa Velas July 3rd thru the 13th. If you are looking for a relaxing, high end, no-kids splashing pool water in your cocktail vacation...this is your place. The grounds are spectacular, the staff is friendly and the food is great for an all inclusive. The only downside, the beds are so darn comfortable...you won't want to get out of it to enjoy all of the other perks. Thankfully they have 24 hour room service.

  • Liked — Service, atmosphere & room
  • Disliked — room service after 11pm food quality slipped in comparison

Our party consists of five and in 2006 we stayed at the Casa Velas and found it great and everything going for it. In 2007 the same party stayed again for another basinful, the hotel is good, nice buildings and gardens etc, everthing fully inclusive. On the third day of arrival three of our group went down with food poisoning after a meal at the hotel. The Hotel was notified but has to date never responded to repeated messages. Maybe the Brothers Velas will never be aware of the happenings at their establishment or with the contamination of food in the hotel kitchen. It could happen anywhere but the responsible Management should not ignore situations of this nature.

We were booked to stay at Velas Vallarta in July 2006, but they gave our room away and offered us this place as an alternative. Because we had been traveling all day and were tired, we figured we move to this place for the night and sort things out with the management in the morning. Things went downhill from there.

We attempted to shower prior to going to bed only to find our room had no hot water. Again, we figured we take it up with management in the morning. Unfortunately, it rained during the night and we woke to find the lower level of our room where the sofas were filled with about an inch of water. We waded out the front door to talk to the management. The management told us that maintenance would take care of the hot water issue and the flood. After the third day the hot water still wasn't fixed.

The other issue was the mosquitos in our room and at the resort. The pool backs up to the golf course and a pond. The pond wasn't filled yet wasn't fully drained either and the mosquitos were unbelievable. We walked from the golf club back to the hotel and were literally swarmed with them. We also got nailed by them trying to sit at the pool. There were also jacuzzis attached to the lower level rooms that hadn't been drained or cleaned and the mosquitos were happy to set up residence there as well. After my honey received about 50 mosquito bites during the night while asleep in our room we decided it was time to find a new hotel. We moved to Grand Velas in Neuvo Vallarta on the third day because we had had enough. Grand Velas was amazing and we're going back there this summer.

The property is pretty enough, but older and could use some work. The management didn't seem all that concerned with our problems...the nerve of us to ask for hot water. The restaurant was the high point. The food was excellent and the staff was wonderful. We wish we could say the same for the accomodations. We felt we were railroaded into this place and wouldn't stay here again. We would visit the restaurant though.

For our honeymoon, we ended up staying here through our timeshare company. Originally we were supposed to stay at their sister hotel Velas Vallarta, but once we got there we got bumped to Casa Velas. We were so glad they did! Casa Velas is much more of a romantic getaway than Velas Vallarta, which is more for families. We also purchased the all-inclusive package because of the great variety of restaurants to choose from. Casa Velas is pretty private, the pool is very relaxing... even though it is not on the beach, you do have access to their private beach club, which is fantastic and has a great restaurant as well. I would definitely go back!

We purchased the Gran Velas Suite Romance/Spa Package for 4 nights. We rec'd nothing in the mail re: vouchers, confirmation, etc. No one picked us up at the airport. The room they gave us was not what we booked. We insisted upon changing and getting what we paid for. The so-called mini bar in the room consisted of 2 beers. It was supposed to be all-inclusive 24 hrs but we had a terrible time getting champage delivered. After 3 nights they finally brought a bottle. They groom the grounds constantly and it was very noisy. You can't enjoy the grounds when their are workmen all over e.g. painting, etc., Enjoyed the beach club alot but got hounded by the vendors coming right up to the pool to sell you something and they didn't leave right away after telling them 5x you didn't want to buy anything. Everyone we met there was on a time share paying $100 per day. We paid alot more than that and felt we didn't get what we thought we booked according to their internet site. The hotel is beautiful but not 5 star 3 diamond. They compare themselve to the Four Season down the road and it is far from that.
