First of all we have been to Mexico many times. We trusted the strong reviews and the ranking of this resort to help make our decision on where to stay. I will start with the good: it is close to the airport so you do not have lengthy cab ride. Walking distance to the Marina which is nice because of all the shopping, dining etc that is there. Rooms are spacious. They do try to make it nice by keeping a small snack basket full in your room-chips, peanuts etc. The staff for the most part were all very friendly and helpful. The activites people by the pool did a good job of entertaining us most afternoons.
Now here is why we will not be back: This is billed as a 5 star. It may have been at one time, but it is OLD. Grounds are well kept but it is tired-pools are nice but no hot tub. Gym is a joke-3-4 steppers bt that's it. No real bar to go to-the one in the lobby is actually just a spare room where the staff fix your drink. Swim up bar was the best. Evening entertainment is the same mariachi's each night(wait, they do change their outfits) Food was just ok but not gourmet or the caliber you would find at other 5 star resorts. We were also advised you could dine at the sister resort (Velas only has 2 restaurants) but found they limited this to 10-12 people per night so you had to get up at 630 to see the concierge and hope no one else was up earlier to get all the spots. As I said rooms were spacious but very dated. They also have rooms that do not have a balcony or a view, but will gladly upgrade you for additional payment. And while I should have thought of this before we booked it is next to the airport so you hear jets coming and going at all hours-so loud it interupts your conversations and your sleep. If this was priced like the 3 star it is I might be tempted to return, but at 4-5 star price no way. And I believe they only have this rating as they bribe you to give a great review with a free spa treatment so I think many reviews here are way overstated.

Room Tip: Some rooms have no balcony or view. Ensure you are aware that you have one overlooking the pool or you will be disppointed.

O.K. I have written about this hotel before but I highly suggest that you visit their spa. These are the professionals that was lucky enough to encounter. Josie, Fabie, Gabriella and Erika. By the way, Connie gives the best facials EVER!!!! This place is an oasis of calm and a great midday break from the sun. Please go!!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for any room not on the ground floor as this is a very nice property with lush grounds, there is a price to be paid. The gardeners wake up early to take care of you and their property.

If you ever have any problems at this hotel which I highly doubt, please do not hesitate to go and see Mr. Willis or Geraldine at the Guest service office. Those two alone will solve any problems that should happen during your stay as well as make sure that it does not happen again. They are irreplaceable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the pool.

We just returned from our annual two week visit to Velas. We have owned for about 8 years. The check in was great! Antonio made us feel like a million dollars after going through a huge line at customs it was very refreshing.

Our room was great, the only complaint I have about the room is that we couldn't keep the patio doors open the first week as there was an air conditioning unit right outside our window that ran 24/7 the first week. But there must have been no one in the neighboring suit the 2nd week because it was off the whole time the 2nd week which was very nice! But our maid was great and our room was always clean. Our maid also came in every night to make up the sofa beds and put chocolate on the pillow for our kids.

It was so nice to see all of our friends that come to this hotel the same time each year. The staff was amazing! Jacinto at the pool is unreal. He seems to read your mind and know what you want at all times. He has become a very good friend of ours! Christian and Fernando do an amazing job with the activies. Our kids just love them and they keep the day very fun!

All the staff at this hotel are amazing and do everything they can to make you feel welcome and special. The grounds are beautiful and clean. The vendors on the beach are not too aggressive and we actually have fun going shopping on the beach.

I had two wonderful massages at the spa. They do a great job!

We spent a day with Rafael who is a vendor on the beach that sells activies/tours and that was amazing. I would highly recommend him to anyone. He took us up to Sayulita and Punta Mita and he was cheaper than a taxi and he spent the whole day with us and knew where to go, eat, etc. It was like have a personal tour guide for the day!

The food was okay. That is really my only complaint. Breakfast was the best meal. But lunch and dinner was not good. In fact, out of the two weeks the only good dinner was the Mexican buffet on Sunday's. And that wasn't as good as years past. The beach restaurant was just really bad for dinner. People all around us were sending their meals back. Towards the end of our stay we ended up ordering room service pizza for dinner. I think going forward we won't do the all inclusive option as there are so many good restaurants in Puerto Vallarta it's a shame to be unhappy with the food.

All in all it was an amazing trip and we will be back next year!
