“Great budget hotel”
Reviewed May 8, 2011

This hotel is a great budget hotel, it is clean and in a good location. It is right on the beach and is walking distance to the main area. It came with a Mexican breakfast buffet which had limited choices but was quite good. We had a balcony looking over the water, which was nice. I would say it is a good value hotel.

Although we have been to PV several times, El Pescador is the only place we stay anymore. The price can't be beat for an ocean front room and the location is outstanding - close to everything except the God forsaken Hotel Zone. As soon as we are checked in (never an issue with price or reservation for us) we head around the corner to the Lay market and buy a cheap, Styrofoam ice chest, ice, beer, limes, rum & cokes - instant mini bar!! The Taco place around the corner is cheap and excellent, and there are too many great, inexpensive restaurants within walking distance to mention. Just head out to explore and nosh your way through old town.

We also never had a problem getting a lounge by the pool, but we usually headed in to town by 10:00 then came back in the late afternoon (happy hour 2-3, then again 5-7!). Always plenty of room poolside when we needed it. And the beds...yes, they are rock hard. As are almost all beds we have slept in in Mexico, but these are REALLY hard. Here is a tip: in your room you will find two extra blankets on the shelf in the "closet" area. Take BOTH of them, fold them in half, and use as a mattress pad under your sheet. If you are using both beds, ask for more blankets! Our room attendant never removed them and I think they are used to we gringos trying to add a little cushion!

I can't add anymore than the positive reviewers have mentioned. Basic, clean, affordable, perfectly located. We also love that it is a favorite stay for Mexican nationals, and not so for rich, demanding gringos. That makes for a really relaxing, enjoyable and authentic Mexico vacation.

Oh - and on wireless Internet: I had no problem getting a connection in my room when I was on the second floor, but could not connect without going to the lobby when I stayed on the third or fourth floor. If that's important to you, ask for a room closer to the lobby. Enjoy!

We booked the hotel on it's own website - and paid for the first night online - albeit short time before arriving there. They could not find our reservation and several times tried to tell us, that we must be wrong and therefore could not expect to get the offer and had to pay the full price. As we had already prepaid, we didn't want to do that and had to insist on being hosted according to the offer - around 520 pesos in stead of 1,670! After some time, we succeeded but it wasn't a great start.
The internet worked most of the time, but mostly in the lobby and not in the room.
Breakfast is not recommendable and we only ate there one morning!
The pool area does not have enough chairs for the guests - even in thiis low season... However the location is great, as it is on the beach.
I definitely could have lived without the ugly blue band that they use as access to the hotel. It is SO unnecessary, as the band doesn't give access to anything else - but still you have to wear it throughout your stay and in town :-(

Had a great vacation with friends in PV. Stayed 8 nights in El Pescador and Staff was noticeably great the entire stay, with the exception of the hotel bar man. He seemed grumpy all the time.
The pool area was clean and right on the beach but they really need more recliners out there, it was a battle after breakfast and people would stake out spots then leave with their towels saving their spot.
The bedrooms and bathrooms were impressively clean and the showers were particularly large and nice. We had an interior and a street side window and sound was never an issue. One of the rooms had a broken air conditioner :(.
Beds are very hard! Most of us had nasty back aches by the end but I can say that it was worth it for the price!
Internet always works by the pool area, though we all lost connectivity in our rooms by the end.

Would definitely recommend, just sleep with a few towel for extra support!

We travelled to Puero Vallarta on stand-by so were of the exact day we would arrive so we could not book ahead on line. When we showed up at the Hotel El Pescador because it appeared to be our best choice, they refused to grant us the rates shown on various websites, They indicated that they had an ocean view room as we asked, but they could not grant it to us at the rates showed online because we had not previously booked it online. I asked to speak to the manager, but whoever was on the phone could not accommodate us either. So BEWARE!

My husband and I stayed at the El Pescador for seven days in February. Overall, we couldn't ask for more given the ocean view, location, price--included breakfast, and cleanliness. We also like firm beds so that was not an issue for us. We were on the second floor and needed no a/c in Feb, and were able to keep our sliding glass door open to hear the ocean while we slept--heaven! The staff was polite and helpful. The only improvement would be safes in the rooms and there was some noise from other guests who liked to party well into the night, but where are you going to get away from that in any resort? If you like a low key, economical hotel that isn't a high rise chain, then this is the place to go. We were in walking distance of the Malecon, markets (supermarket as well as open air markets selling Mexican jewelry, etc), the Romantic Zone, and we also easily took busses to the Marina, Bucerias, & Sayulita.

El Pescador is a great hotel. From the moment you arrive you feel very welcome and well looked after. I can't think of anything more I would ask for in my ocean view room with balcony at that price. Pool was beautiful and the whole premises well maintained. Rooms spotless, beds comfy. The beach is right there when you step onto the balcony and the whole lovely bay is all yours. The only thing I didn't love is pigeons perched atop tables in the dining room and pecking away on the breakfast buffet table, flying all around you. It's great that breakfast is complementary when you book on-line but I don't feel birds on my food is too clean. Different strokes I guess! Otherwise, spot-on.
