This hotel has a great staff, and is centrally located in the gay area of PV. Everything gay is only a short walk from Mecurio, including the gay beach. While the rooms are nothing to write home about, they are functional and clean. The decor is a little dated, but the value can't be beat. The staff was always friendly and helpful, and the amenities are the best, including free WiFi, free beach/pool towel service, and included full breakfast buffet (the chocolate pastries are to die for!) The afternoon happy hour at the pool bar was always a great time, and the other guests were friendly and came from all over the world. Even hooking up was safe and secure as the hotel has a policy that guests must leave an ID at the front desk while on the property. This ensured the safety of you and the other guests and is a great policy. The in-room safe was also a great service, and added security for my passport and valuables when I was out and about. I was very happy I stayed here rather than rent a condo, where I would not have met so many wonderful people, both locals and other tourists. And the value can't be beat! Highly recommended!

The Hotel El Mercurio is a gay hotel in the old town section of PV. I paid US$110/night for 3 nights then got a 10% discount for paying cash on check out. Overall US$94/night.
I was a solo traveler and was given a queen size bed in a relatively small room. The dimensions of the room were approx. 11' x 11' not inluding the bath.
My room and others that I saw, need to be updated and remodelled. They are very clean but the bedspread and furniture is old. There is really no place to sit down in the room except for one hard wooden chair. The window is a sliding aluminum type from the 70s and did not lock. I opens right out onto a open balcony/corridor that looks over the central pool courtyard. This is actually nice as the whole point of this place is to meed other like minded folks, which is fairly easy. It stays quiet at night with the interior rooms. Partyers are all at the clubs.
The staff is wonderful. They really go out of your way to help you and their English is excellent.
A buffet breakfast is included which is set up out by the pool. The food was good and basically American is style with pastries, some sort of meat (sausages or bacon) orange juice, scrambled eggs and coffee. Toast can be had for the asking.
The location is great. Between the gay beach area and the "old town" commercial district, also called the "Romantic Zone." You can walk to everything you really want to see in less than 10 minutes. Even though the window didn't lock, I felt that the overall security of the inn was excellent.

Puerto Vallarta seems to have high prices for lodging compared to Hawaii and Florida. I am not sure why this is. The town (city) is ridiculously overbuilt from a recent building boom. There is way too much capacity. There are two other prominent gay oriented hotels on the beach...Blue Chairs (which gets awful reviews) and the new Blue Seas. Both of those were $200+ per night.

Chain hotel aficionados will need to stay in the hoteleria section or way north of the airport in Nuevo Vallarta. This defeats the whole point of the gay neighborhood experience of the Romantic Zone.

The people at Hotel Mercurio are friendly and polite and are especially helpful to those who do not know the language. They are very knowledgeable about the local businesses (restaurants, clubs, etc.) that can enhance a vacation experience. They serve an excellent breakfast every morning, provide free internet access for their guests, and they even allow some international phone calls. This was our second visit, and we were VERY pleased both times.

What a great hotel! The rooms are funky but very clean and functional. Avoid a room facing the street because the bars across the street are really loud until really late. Free internet and VOIP were a pleasure. And free breakfast every morning around the pool was a great place to meet other hotel guests. I booked online at the hotel's website so I probably didn't get as good a deal as some others have reported, but all in all I think I got great value for the money. Special Thanks to Joel, Juan Carlos, and Jose Luis!

I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Mercurio. It's in a great location (i.e., in the gay Zona Romantica neighborhood and just a few minutes' walk to the beach) and the staff was always friendly & helpful. Although the room was basic I found it to be comfortable and charming - I especially liked the spacious shower (and high-quality toilet paper!). The cherry on the top was how reasonable the room rate was (especially considering my trip was during peak season). I'd stay here again if I returned to Puerto Vallarta.
