“Our dream vacation”
Reviewed June 17, 2010

We spent a wonderful week at Barcelo Puerto Vallarta with family and friends. Everything at the all-inclusive resort--from the tropical beauty of the natural scenery, to the superior service we received throughout our stay--contributed to making our brief vacation a truly unforgettable experience. The rooms were spacious, very well appointed, and kept very clean. The food was excellent; we appreciated most the quality and variety of foods offered at the daily buffet. The staff of the resort was very hospitable and responsive to questions and individual requests. We have highest regard for the untiring effort of all hotel workers to make our vacation most pleasant. Special thanks to the tour guide Juan; to the maids; to the gardeners; to the chefs and waiters at the daily buffet whose professional skills were often superior to those of the staff of the special a la carte restaurants. The nightly entertainment was family oriented. We loved the variety of possibilities to gain insight in the traditions of Mexican culture both inside the resort (through the crafts exhibits, shows, etc.) and outside of it, through visits to the neighboring village of Mismaloya and the charming Puerto Vallarta.

My experience at Barcelo was better than I could have expected! Super helpful and friendly staff, clean and gorgeous room, and overall a fantastic hotel! The location is a bit from the city, but it is easy, safe, and inexpensive to get back into town, even though you really dont need to. There is so much to do! Ceramics, kayaking, beach, pool group activities (Johnny, the activity director, is an amazing person to know... so helpful). They can also help coordinate other activities, e.g., ziplining, jet skiing, everything! And the food and bar are amazing!!! this place is pretty much a guarantee for a fun, beautiful, and VERY safe trip!!!

Only there 2 nights - stayed at the Marriott Casamagna the other nights during our stay. It was an enjoyable taxi ride to this very southern location in Puerto Vallarta. The front entrance was interesting and well done. The bellman greets you with a glass of champagne - nice touch. When we checked in, they were having a problem with their room key machine and couldn't give us a room key but the bellman took us to our room. The smallest elevators in a hotel this size I've ever seen...states right on the wall "Capacity 6 people".

Our room was very large - not a family room but lots & lots of space for 2 ppl. When you first walk in, there's a sitting area with sofa, chairs, plasma TV on the wall plus a ceiling fan. It was nice, but we never used this area - never even tried this tv to see if it worked. The bedroom area was very large with a sofa as well and a desk plus a small dining table with chairs. Another plasma TV and a ceiling fan - those I loved. Bed was comfortable and I liked the lighting in the room. A fridge of course with complimentary Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, bottled water, and Tecante beer, some juices & beverages, a couple packs of nuts, one bag of chips and two small bottles of either tequila or rum - not sure - never drank it. The balcony was awesome - great view of the ocean, pool, and mountains/jungle.

To me, the pool area seemed small - it was very pretty and well landscapped with lots of beautiful foilage and a waterfall - but it wasn't "sprawling" like at the Marriott we had just left. We only had one day by the pool since we took the Las Calentas excursion one day and was gone practically the entire day. My husband complained a lot about the lounge chairs being too short and how very uncomfortable the lounge chairs were. He's not that tall, 6 ft., but his legs hung off the end of the chair (all the chairs are alike) and he just couldn't get comfortable.

The service was good, staff friendly. We never ate at the buffet. We had dinner in the Don Quiotes or something like that the first night - it was very very good. Second night we ate at the outdoor steak restaurant and it was good as well.

It is nice to be at all A.I. & free food and beverage.

The beach...if you want to enjoy a beach experience, I just don't think this would be the place. There is very little beach, is small in length but also in width, the waves come in very close and there's not a lot of room at all. There are vendors but they are very polite.

Regarding the internet, am not sure what difference it makes & how you rate this status, but there is a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the lobby that your room key will allow you to access. It has a huge window overlooking the waterfall & pool area and there are several sofas and sitting areas. Two computers with internet access & printers are available free of charge. There is also an open bar with top shelf liquors, even Grey Goose vodka, as well as hors d'oeuvres. In the morning fresh fruit, pastries, yogurt. An ice machine & coffee/espresso machine.

We did walk to the little village directly across the street. It was so interesting - definitely recommend doing this...there are 3 tequila factories that you will enjoy.

The morning we left our balacony door was open and we kept hearing loud yells and screams, just roars - not just from one person but it sounded like a huge crowd. Looking out at the pool and beach area from the balcony we didn't see a thing. Every 5 or 10 min. as we were packing up, we'd hear it. At first, silly me, I thought the hotel was being invaded. As we exited the elevator to check out - the cantina was right there - oh my goodness so many people cramed into the cantina that morning watching the first day of the World Soccer games...and Mexico was playing - that explained the noise - the cantina is an open-air bar. We got a good laugh.

I would recommend this hotel, making sure they were aware of the very small beach area. I really like the Mexican culture experience here. The beach is the issue & of course those pool chairs for my husband.

We just got back from a 7 night stay. Thank you to all the previous posters, the advice was very helpful.

Very Good Things:
Poolside wait service was excellent. They work hard to keep the drinks coming. We tipped quite a bit, but noticed others that did not and it did not affect the wonderful service they gave. They even fetched snacks from the snack bar - we really thought they were a great group of servers, really trying to make the guests feel welcome.

Bartenders were great. We had Antonio 6 of our 7 nights. He appreciated our tips and made us excellent (and strong) drinks. He works so hard, making most of the drinks all himself for the entire bar and tables surrounding the bar area. We would just marvel at the quantity of drinks he would continuously pour all night long - what a hard worker!

The grounds are maintained very well, the jungle setting is something to see. I thought it had a good balance of pools, beach and facilities. I liked the fact that it wasnt so spread out - a manageable size with lots to offer.

Desserts were really great. Everything we tried at the buffet or ala carte restaurants was delicious. That was not our previous experience in Mexico, so it was a pleasant surprise that everything tasted as good as it looked.

Pretty Good:
The meals we ate there were good. Nothing knocked my socks off, but the choices were plentiful. The buffet didnt seem as big compared to other all inclusives we stayed at, but at the same time it had all the categories, including made to order eggs, hot sandwiches and pasta. It was all in a more compact space with less employees. We ate all the food with no sign of illness at all between the four of us. I think the prior problems were most likely due to viruses and not sanitation issues. The snack bar was a change of pace at lunch or for a snack, although it was a little confusing as to what you were supposed to serve yourself and what a server was to bring you. We ate at all 3 ala carte restaurants. Again, good - not great. Other than the presentations and the far superior service, the food quality seemed similar to that at the buffet.

Gym - never crowded and adequate for my moderate work outs.

Shops - we were able to obtain a couple of items we needed and it made for a good diversion.

Ceramic painting - my son and I had fun making a our own souvenirs and the prices were reasonable.

Activities - the employees really tried to involve everyone in the daily activities without being too pushy. They were a fun bunch of people that kept everyone entertained with their games and exercises around the pool. My son even tried scuba diving and we also enjoyed kayaking.

Room - we stayed in a 2 bedroom suite. While it was nice to have separate sleeping quarters and 2 baths, I expected a bigger common space for us to relax and watch tv. The balconies are very nice with convenient drying racks.

Not so good:
Housekeeping! I am amazed because of prior positive reviews on this site. Simple tasks not completed. Dirty glasses not taken away, dirty towels not replaced, room made up as late as 5pm. I attempted to tip, but some days they didnt take it? The last two days were the best, so I have a feeling there was a maid change about then. Forget about fresh flowers, we were lucky to get wash cloths!

Buffet wait service. VERY ANNOYING. All they had to do was take away dirty dishes and provide beverages. This seemed unattainable, getting napkins was a challenge some days. We ate there every morning, we tipped and never got the same server twice. They were weak, head and shoulders BELOW the poolside staff, bartenders and ala carte servers. We were treated to "trainees" one morning and while they had no clue what they were doing, there was more effort put forth.

No free internet. I think it is ridiculous that hotels still charge for this service. We did without rather than pay the ridiculous cost.

Outside of our hotel, we did tour one of the 3 tequila factories in the town of Mismaloya. It was interesting and the margaritas were the best we had all trip. We booked a ziplining excursion at the Predator set with the guys just outside the hotel and they were really nice, saved us a few bucks and had good advice for our travels. The trip was strenuous but fun. We visited Tony's hideaway twice. The food was so delicious as previously stated and they were such gracious hosts. It was a nice change of pace from the hotel and the seafood was excellent. One of Tony's relatives "escorted us" from the road to the restaurant both visits. We walked both times, but we felt comfortable because we had walked through for the tours we went on and there were 4 of us. We went on a small boat to the three 'islands', toured the area by sea and fed tropical fish.

All in all, we had an enjoyable, relaxing vacation. The hotel had a unique location, good facilities and a fair price. The majority of the staff works very hard and deserve tips for the fine service they give. The very good and good definately outweighed the not so good, and we would visit again.

This is a AAA four diamond resort, and deservedly so. Every employee takes their job seriously, so that you can enjoy your vacation completely. The property is scrupulously clean and well maintained. You can do it your way. There is a wide variety of activities on offer, or you can just relax poolside.
Well-appointed rooms, with a stylish yet relaxing decor. A great variety of food on offer, stressing fruits and vegetables at their peak, and fresh seafood. Don't pass up the Capri restaurant - they know how to do Italian well.
My only quibble? They should update the photos on Expedia - the rooms are even better than the photos - and that isn't usually the case.

The hotel was very large. Clean, Nice variety of restaurants to choose from, Adelina at the consierge desk will hook you up with a nice canopy zip line tour (Los Veranos) only 3 hours long which was long enough for me. Food was great, awesome buffets. Very nice staff. The guys at the bars are awesome!!.
