We stayed between Feb 28th-Mar 7th 2014. We were in a family room - my husband and I had our own bedroom with a king sized bed and my mother in law was in her own separate bedroom with a king sized bed as well. The rooms were nice and great views. The TV in the second bedroom (2415) was old and did not work properly, but didn't go to Mexico to watch TV so it was no problem for us. The staff were extremely friendly. Always greeted with smiles and they worked hard to ensure that all of your needs were met. The drinks were great. Food was great. The specialty restaurants were VERY good...and the buffet had a huge selection that allowed everyone to find something they like. The snack bar had great hand rolled tortillas and fresh chips and guacamole that I ate almost everyday because they were that good. The beach was nice. Waves were a bit rough and the sand was pebbly, but still nice. The tide was high for a couple of days we were there so the beach chairs were not put out, but the pools made up for that. This hotel has the most beautiful pools, with wonderful waterfalls and greenery around them. We walked to the zoo from the hotel and it was an experience of a lifetime to be able to get so close to the animals and feed them out of your hands. We also went on a fishing and snorkelling trip with the 'Happy Fish' Fishing charter that was booked right from the hotel beach. The gentleman on the Happy Fish, Efreen (sorry, probably spelt wrong), was very professional and ensure that everyone was safe and having fun. We also took the local bus into downtown PV and walked the boardwalk, which was very enjoyable and felt safe the entire time. Overall great hotel, fabulous staff and wonderful memories.

The Barceló is a very nice hotel! The rooms are wonderful....really modern and everything to offer in them. We had a premium room (7th floor) View of pool & ocean mountains was stunning!
It is clean, well taken care of and the staff were very friendly (most of the time!)
Our group of 8 (family & friends) went from Feb 22-March 1, 2014
For my son's 6th birthday we went to the zoo which is across street and up through the little village, he loved it there (we go to this zoo every time we go to PV)
We also went to senor frogs & had a blast!!! Our cab driver took us and stayed with us and that was by far the best night we had! Awesome atmosphere & food was fabulous!! So were the drinks!!
However I have been going to PV for 18 years now & this was my first time staying this far out( of PV) ...so know that if you want to go into town it is $25-60 one way (depending on how many of us went to town we had a total of 16 people) The food was good at first but after day 4 it was bland to us...
My kids ages 6-11-14-16 loved the pool, ocean (beach was really nice), fruity drinks etc...the pool/restaurant staff were really nice too!
My oldest scuba dived (day & night) and really enjoyed that!
I always stay down town in the south hotel zone and every a.m we would walk to melecon/board walk/little shops etc. so unfortunately I would not stay at the Barceló again (our family booked this hotel & we then booked it)
It is beautiful but too far out for our family's liking.

Room Tip: Rooms 7-9 th floor are the best premium!

BUT Barceló is quite a bit inferior to the one in Huatuco and Costa Rica we have stayed at previously. It was a beautiful resort area but the hotel was in severe need of updating and an overall cleaning. I generally never write reviews but I would like to say that the housekeepers need to know what should be left in the rooms as we never got everything we needed everyday. It was hit and miss as to towels, coffee, etc. I don't think it is the maids fault at all as they are hard workers. There may be more rooms assigned to each that is possible to do in a day. I don't know. We both had bug bites from not sure what, had a horrible rubber pad on the bed, bed linens were never changed in the whole week we were there. Our safe in the room was unpredictable, our room key never worked at one point so we had to keep going down stairs to front desk until security came.
We only ate breakfast as the buffet, which was good but there was a lot of mixtures of indescribable dishes. We found out at the end of the week that we were to get coupons to fill out to get into an a'la carte restaurant so we never got to go to those. That whole process using the specialty restaurants should be eliminated. We would have liked to go to the Steak and Seafood one at least. Also the front desk and the Transat company need to review policy. We were told two different things about check out. One said we could check out and use the facility until out departure time and the other was trying to get our wristbands or a fee. We were given a package of coupons when we checked in but absolutely no instructions as to when, how or where to use them.
Anyhow, the staff was generally friendly...some not that much.
In general, we won't ever go back there for sure. It is a half an hour out of PV so that is another reason ....why travel and pay for transportation into town when there are so many reasons not to stay there.
I think an upgrade and an evaluation of the resort is really needed.

We would definitely recommend this resort for both families and couples! It is very private area and smaller beach but offers everything you need. Suite rooms and family rooms were huge, clean and had large decks. We stayed in the 2nd Tower on the 3rd and 4th floors. View was great, used the stairs often as the elevator was either busy or out of order. Always check out your rooms before hauling your luggage there. We were originally assigned rooms that were dark with no view but they did change us to better ones so that all 3 families were in the same area. Worth the extra time at check-in to make sure you end up with a good room. Restaurants: buffet/pool snack bar/specialty restaurants were all excellent and provided good selection. We enjoyed the food and were thrilled they offered premium alcohol. We were also impressed with their wine. Usually we have found Mexican wine not so enjoyable but it was better than the duty free we brought from Canada. If you do like rye, then take some from duty free as they don't have "made in Canada" rye there. Note that the speciality restaurants required long pants for men and they are adamant about that rule. Pools were large, warm and great deck area. If you're looking for some local fun, head to the beach, go across the stream and search for Sergio. He owns a boat and can take you on the BEST snorkeling trip to Los Arcos (just a few minutes away)! He is very qualified, provides all the equipment and even goes in the water with you to guide and explain the fish, etc. (approx. $25pp) He can also recommend a place to go for a wonderful massage on the beach (same price) We were worried from other reports about the no-see-um issue but we didn't receive any bites. Hotel is about 30 min out of PRV which worked for us . If you want to venture to downtown you can cab ($15US) or bus (8 pesos). We found the hotel staff very friendly overall . We tipped everyday, including the maids and the food servers (even at the buffet and pool bar service) and it was worth it. Great family holiday and we can hardly wait to do again!

Room Tip: rooms in 2nd Tower are quieter and get afternoon/evening sun on the deck elevators sometimes slow or out of order so mid level is more convenient if you have to use stairs

The Barcelo brothers mix a number of different themes into this resort. Young families with young children, even babies, looked relaxed. There are those who want to party, and along with the local Mexican guests have a good time at the Cantina/Bar. Those who want to veg have many places to sit or lay around the pool. Lots of room. The beach is a short run,not for those looking to walk for miles. However this Resort is nestled against the mountains and tight to the beach. If you are in Building 1 room 1507 as we were, the morning sun rises over the mountain, shines a warm glow over the gently swaying palm trees in front of you,to the sound of the surf crashing at the beach. So relaxing! The Resort is across the road from a small town/Tequila factory and next to a working village with some good beach restaurants.Snorkeling is off the beach to the left hand side. The city bus passes by every 15 min or so.Easy run into town.Staff works hard and is a friendly bunch .Patricia the morning breakfast hostess, always greets you with a smile. The on site store jewelry vendor will even do custom work for you. Ask for Ariel. Great trip.We will be back.

Room Tip: Building 1 has the cantina/bar, Building 2 seemed quieter
