My husband and I booked a getaway weekend to Puerto Vallarta and decided to stay at the Barcelo. What a pleasant surprise...the hotel is beautiful, our room spectacular, the food was excellent and the staff was welcoming and very friendly. The beach is quiet and the water is a good temperature (we were there in March) so swimming was great. We would definitely plan to go back. And the city of Puerto Vallarta is nice too.

Room Tip: It is definitely worth reserving oceanview, premium room.

Just got back from a great little trip to PV with my wife and 5-year old daughter. We stayed at the Barcelo Puerto Vallarta. We stayed there 13 years ago when it was La Jolla Mismaloya (and there was no all-inclusive option), so we were familiar with the property. We had a good time, so I can't downgrade too much for the issues we had...

The Good
- Lovely location away from all the solicitors, etc. that hang around the beaches downtown. Beach is private, although the solicitors do hang out right on the perimeter in case you want a necklace or something. It is a bit of a cab ride from downtown (15 minutes or so), but we didn't leave the property this time, so that was no problem.
- The grounds are excellent. Nice pools, well manicured greenery and very clean throughout.
- Nice little kiddie pool with slide. Perfect for kids that can't swim. Lots of fun.
- The Barcy (kids) Club was very convenient and the staff was very friendly. Our daughter loved it there and often requested to stay longer when we offered to leave. Good little projects and outings when they did have kids there.
- The check-in/out process was very easy and they were very accommodating to our needs.
- We had a "family suite" on one of the Premium Club floors and it was PERFECT. Our daughter had a separate room and there were two bathrooms. The view was amazing. By far the highlight of the trip was the room, which is a HUGE factor in my rating.
- The breakfast buffet was pretty good.
- All of the staff were very friendly and helped us out whenever they could.
- No timeshare pressure anywhere on the grounds. This is big for me.

The Bad
- The food was not very good. This was our 2nd experience at an all-inclusive, so I don't quite know what to expect, but it wasn't up to my expectations. I know not to expect "gourmet" because the food must appeal to the masses, but I do expect the mexican food to be good. The dining experience at the a la carte restaurants felt classy, but for the most part the food fell short.
- The poolside service was lacking. In the 5 days we were there, we were served 3 drinks. And we spent all day by the pool. I shouldn't have to walk all the way to the bar to get a drink. And they should have poolside food service. Where was that?
- The a la carte restaurants should have more reservations available. We paid for "premium club" and it includes unlimited a la carte restaurants. But there were no reservations available the first two nights. We met couples in Premium Club that were NEVER able to get a reservation. The staff said that 2 a la carte restaurants would be open each night, and then when we went to make reservations, only 1 was open each night. And they were packed when we got there, so why not keep two open?
- The kiddie pool needs to have more seating around it for parents to sit and watch. There is NONE! You have to stand and watch, or leave.
- The slide for the kiddie pool needs to be lined or made from fiberglass. Our daugher was all scraped up as it was basically painted concrete.
- All in all, I'd say "Premium Club" was not worth it. Unlimited reservations feature was not useful. The discount coupons saved us $20. The top floor room was nice, though.
- They only re-stocked our minibar on the first night. Other guests said theirs was never re-stocked.

So, to summarize, our room, the grounds and the staff rated a 5, but everything else was a 3, so I'm giving them a 4. I would go back but will wait to see better reviews of service improvements.

Room Tip: If traveling with kids, get the family suite.

Our family of four plus the grandparents visited the Barceló during April 21-28, 2012. This was our second trip to Puerto Vallarta and we found this time a much better trip. The resort was a little far from the airport and downtown but well worth the ride. We upgrade including the grandparents, were given a garden view room on the second floor which was not what I upgrade for so file a complaint and both our room and the grandparents room was upgraded to a two bed room suites ocean view on the highest floor. I have to say the services in the club premium lounge was very good. They responded quickly to our complaint.

Club premium lounge: the services were very good and they have a single cup espresso maker. the service clerk responded to our request right away and very helpful.

Room: No tubs so very hard to shower the kids. Little old and out of date. The room was very clean and comfortable. Mini bar was always filled and if you catch them when they are filling the bar and give them a little tip they will provide you with more drinks and snacks such as chips and nuts.

Pool: not enough pools and lawn chairs. Always play the towel game. Thank god the grandparents came and woke up early at 6 am to put towels on the lawn chairs if not you will not be able to get a lawn chair where you want with shads. Hot tub was full of kids not adults.

Kids Club: You must be 4 years or older. Lots of activities to keep the kids busy but they closed early. Very friendly and helpful with the kids. Understands English very well.

Painting Table: A lady outside the Kids Club area was selling unpainted crafts which you can purchase and paint yourself. Little over priced.

Buffet: Lots of variety and special themes. Plenty of seats with a nice ocean view. Services was great and loved the fresh whole fish everyday during lunch.

A la Carte: All the A la Cartes were good but loved the Spanish restaurant food was excellent and services too.

Beach: swarm by locals trying to sell you things such as liquors, cigars, clothing, jewelleries, etc. I have to say the massage on the beach from the locals was cheap and good. Not too bad for pacific ocean beach.

Shows: in the evening after dinner nothing much to do which the hotel provides shows which were entertaining. Please make sure your child does not order drinks without adult present. They will provide alcohol drinks to your child if they do not know how to order especially when your child does not know to say VIRGIN.

Overall: I will return to this resort but keep in mind lots of nationalist that stay there.

Room Tip: Corner unit 2 bed room suite and highest floor with ocean view.

We just returned from an amazing stay at Barcelo Mismayola! It was a wonderful week and I would have to say, darned close to perfect. We have been to Puerta Vallarta many times and have stayed in private rentals, hotels, condos in different areas from Bucerias to Mismayola. They have all been great stays for different reasons, but this time I really felt like I had a true vacation. The service is professional, yet warm and friendly. There is a great variety of food to eat and plenty of it. I truly appreciated that they always had Mexican food available, and that is not always the case in some all inclusive resorts. The restaurants are beautiful, open air except for two of the ala carte specialty ones. I can honestly say that all the food was good and they pay special attention to hygiene matters. Every morning I would say to myself, another perfect day in Paradise. The location is wonderful, far enough away from town, but an easy cab or bus ride away. We only left the resort twice and my husband is Mexican and loves to be in town. We had even planned on going out for one fancy dinner with a view but decided, WHY? The views here are great, the special restarunts a treat, the service great. Oh, yes, the rooms are fantastic and everything is kept in beautiful condition. There is nightly entertainment and a fun cantina. They even have an open air cinema one night for the kids, complete with popcorn and drinks. A great family place as well. Have I convinced you? The price is a bargain for what you get. Special notes for great service are for Felix in the cantina, Esmeralda (patio buffet), Jose, a waiter in the patio buffet and Antionia, the activities director. I must also say great beds!

Room Tip: If you don't want to hear music from the cantina, ask for a room across the compound or one high...

All inclusive paradise! The rooms are all great, mini bar included in rate, great restaurants and a very good international variety in the buffet. The beach is ok. Pool is always the perfect temperature and a swim up bar that makes you wanna smile. Its not a party hotel though. If you are looking for a party, look somewhere else. Anyways, they can take you out everynight to the malecon to some great clubs. The only negative is that the Cantina is only open til 1 am.

Room Tip: room 1506 has a great pool, forest and sea view!

Visited Barcelo during the middle of March for a 4 day getaway. The area that the hotel sits on, is very picturesque and beautiful. The front desk staff is accommodating and friendly; but the gem of this hotel are the underpaid staffers that make sure you have a great time. From the friendly bartenders, to the cleaning ladies, to maintenance, to the waiters and waitresses.....these people go out of their way to make sure that you enjoy yourself. The food was great and had a variety of options for the laid back to the pickiest eater. The restaurant sits on the beach, allowing you fresh air and a beautiful view. The rooms are amazing; Spacious with great amenities and every one has a balcony (Hotel is shaped like a horseshoe so every room has a pool or ocean view, with the mountains behind or to the side). Would definitely go again.

We had a great time at Barcelo over Christmas break. After my husband and son went fishing and came back with a nice mahi-mahi, the manager, Mauricio Hernandez, had the restaurant chef cook it for us. They served it with rice and vegetables, and it was absolutely delicious. Antonio, the activities guy, was super friendly and always trying to engage everyone. Really all the staff was friendly. The buffet was so-so, but the Spanish restaurant was wonderful. Make your reservations as soon as you get there; they fill up quickly. We took a cab to the zoo and had a great time playing with the baby tigers - where else can you do that? Another time we went to a local water park and swam with dolphins. The area is just beautiful, and we'll probably be back.

Room Tip: On some nights there was loud music playing until late. Choose a high floor.
