I stayed here in one of the penthouse suites on the 14th floor, which are two-story townhouses. The unit was very large, and we especially liked having two full bathrooms on separate levels. The balconies offered fantastic views of the Ocean, Old Town, the grounds, and the Bay. I would probably pick a junior suite next time to get the wide balcony as this seems more useful. We never used the hot tub, and it looked like it could use a deep cleaning. Beds were super comfortable, and the quality of the sheets, towels, and bathrobes were up to standards. Never ran out of hot water in the large walk-in showers. Very quiet in the room and at night, never had any trouble sleeping. Air conditioning worked flawlessly. Internet was included - but only because we were Starwood Platinum Guests, otherwise it's over $20USD a day - and you have to keep logging on because the system times you out often. Breakfast was $25per person ($15 b/c we received a Platinum Credit).

Breakfast with my coffee by the poolside was one of my favorite parts of the day. The restaurant by the pool offered an excellent breakfast buffet complete with an omelette bar. They were able make egg white omelettes, which are my favorite, and they offered a few lunch items such as pork pazole, and then there was the lineup of fresh fruit, yogurt/granola/cereal station, fresh pastries and salad items, pancakes, french toast, cold cuts etc. Many of the items mirrored the local cuisine, which was fantastic.

The on-site gym offered a decent selection of equipment, and we were able to get in our complete workouts with a little improvising. But the moist air is starting to rust the equipment, and the exercise balls could need to be inflated on a regular basis. But probably the best hotel gym based on equipment options that I've seen so far. The spa with steam-room and sauna looked great.

The grounds are beautiful and the pool is amazing. We spent most of our days at the grassy cabana area by the beach bar, sipping on drinks while listening to the ocean. The lounge chairs were quite comfortable. Service from the staff was fantastic, but they need more help with the volume of guests at the beach side bar. And the quality of the drinks is my only big complaint about the property. The alcohol that they use is so cheap it tastes awful. If you order a mixed drink, you can probably drown the taste out, but it's a shame to be in the Tequila capital and not have top shelf quality liquors such as Patron.

I would absolutely stay here again - but next time in a Junior Suite; and I would probably skip the drinks until they get better liquor.

-------------------------------My recommendations to the hotel are:----------------------------------------------------

1. Hire a host and rope off the side entrances to the breakfast buffet so you can ensure that guests are seated in an orderly fashion, and only after the staff has had a chance to refresh the tables.
2. Add top shelf quality liquors to your bars, especially at the beach side. The drinks are bad because the liquor is cheap.
3. It's time to upgrade the gym equipment. Get rid of the treadmills and add some Hammer Strength Machines. This will really set you apart from other properties.
4. Add complimentary internet and breakfast to all guests, most hotels now offer this.

Room Tip: Floor 10 or higher. Junior Suite.

Stayed here from 1/17 - 1/20, 2014.

For the sucky stuff: It took too long to check in, i was frustrated though the BF was handling it and it didn't seem to bother him much (maybe I was just anxious to get to the good stuff). .. now on to the fun stuff :)

First person we met was Pedro, the Bellman, OK.. PEDRO I hope you read this - THE BEST! I fell in love with Pedro's disposition, So adorable. Every time we'd come to or leave the hotel we'd go by to say hello and Pedro would always have this great vibe as though he really meant it when he said he was glad to see you. I didn't get to say bye when we left because he wasn't working. All of the staff that I dealt with were great.

We were given a ground floor room (I wanted a higher floor since that's what the reviews said to get).. WE LOVED IT! The direct access to the pool and the beach was fantastic with the patio where we'd sit and watch the sun rise or set with our bottle of wine from the OXXO across the street, SUPER! And we'd go out the back way with no need for elevator etc..

We planned not to eat at the hotel since the BF is a sailor and we really enjoyed going to the marina for meals, but one morning we had an unplanned breakfast at the hotel and it was incredible! He had the yogurt and fruit something and breads with fresh made jams and I only ordered the oatmeal banana smoothie for myself (wanted to save room to eat more later during our excursions around town) and we had coffee.. the fruit plate was SO big we both ate that and the smoothie was amazing! It was a lot of food for two people.

The beach peddlers didn't bother us much, we know they're just trying to make a living so that's fine. We swam in the pool and in the ocean at the hotel and it was really nice..

The room was beautifully set, the shower was amazing and yes, I loved the shutters between the bathroom and bed - for a romantic stay, it was sexy :) .. and the bed was definitely heavenly.

We definitely plan to go back (hopefully this year) and plan to stay at the Westin again .

Room Tip: I don't know about the higher rooms, but the ground floor is definitely very nice.

We stayed for 8 nights in an Ocean view room on the 8th floor. The view from the room was amazing as you could see the sunset, all of Banderas Bay, the Sierra Madre mountains and even the cruise ships as they entered the Maritime terminal between 7-8am. The hotel is located in the Marina area which is very safe and has many restaurants within easy walking distance. All the hotel staff were very friendly. The room was well maintained & equipped with free safe(laptop would fit), iron, hairdryer and coffee maker. However, the Mexican coffee sachets in the room cost 42 pesos each. So, if you enjoy that special early morning coffee on the balcony, bring the coffee you enjoy & #2 cone filters. The bed was Heavenly and the bathroom had a rainshower, never ending hot water and good pressure. Housekeeping was efficient and thorough. The balcony was a good size with decent chairs and small table. Also the balcony was totally private as the hotel design prevented anyone leaning over/around to see in from other rooms. Never really had to wait for elevators even though the hotel was near capacity. There was never an issue of finding an available lounger at the pool/beach. The towels on loungers at 7am game was not played here as really nobody really went down before 9am. The pool was a good size that meandered through the coconut palms. However, if you are looking for non-stop loud noise and boisterous pool games & activities then this hotel is not for you. If you have kids, there is a very nice pool and playground area for them. The beach wasn't huge but OK and was mainly used by the beach vendors and the guys renting jet skis & boat rides. Those guests who went whale watching were very pleased with their trips. We tried room service one evening and it was decent quality and delivered within 30 minutes. We used the computer in the hotel's business room & it cost US$5 for 30 minutes. They also charge to print each page if you need to use the printer. The Westin is only a 5 minute taxi ride from the airport yet there is no aircraft noise. The taxi fare from the airport is 200 pesos or US$20...pay in pesos as 200 pesos converts to $16. Going back to the airport the charge is only 50 pesos! If you take a taxi from the hotel to the Malecon it costs 80 pesos and once you cross the Rio Cuale in the old town it rises to 100 pesos. The bus from the old town to the hotel only costs 7.5 pesos. We got a decent exchange rate when we used the HSBC ATM at the Plaza Marina shopping centre. There are 3 banks there and a large supermarket.
There is an OXXO store directly across the road from the Westin and we bought a styrofoam cooler there for 60 pesos, 2x1litre waters for 15 pesos, and beer for about 12 pesos each.
We had meals around the marina. Victors Place does breakfast for 69 pesos: coffee, OJ, omelette and toast/jam. We also liked The Coffee Cup for a really decent coffee and bagel plus with the purchase you get free 15 minutes Internet on their computers. For supper we tried Fajitas Galore which had huge, delicious portions. Victors Place was always busy as everyone gets a free shot of tequila plus a Kahlua and cream to finish. Pepes Tacos was inexpensive and did delicious pork tacos. Mr Jack had good shrimp plus you got a cactus and peppers appy.

Room Tip: Ocean view is a must so seek higher floor.

Not only are the rooms amazing and with great views (got an ocean view suite for practically nothing) but excellent beds and services. The showers are to die for. The staff was extremely helpful and kind. Not pushy and knows how to recommend a good cocktail (ask for Patricia at the pool bar). The beach is really nice, small and in this side of town you'll have much privacy.
The only downside is the breakfast buffet price. But you're not obliged to take it. They should add free wifi to make this the best stay. Definitely comin back next year

This is the second year running that we have stayed here. Pros: It has beautifully cared for grounds., delightful staff, comfortable and clean rooms, excellent buffet breakfast. Cons wi if is still difficult to connect to, the drain stinks right outside one part of the restaurant, guests are allowed to put towels on chairs around the pool and not come back until late morning, has shutters separating the bathroom from the bedroom, not my cup of tea!.

The hotel needs to be careful what English music they have playing, we realised that they obviously did not understand the words on a few tracks, which were totally inappropriate with children around.

All said and done we do like this hotel.

Room Tip: The higher level rooms have the best views.

A very spacious spartan lobby greets visitors along with good staff. Our Royal Beach Club room was nice and offered a wonderful view of the grounds and ocean. Unfortunately the Regina Beach Club (timeshare I was told) structure which appears to have been plopped down after the Westin was constructed hinders the view. Note: the Royal Beach Club rooms are on the upper floors and at least floors 12 and 14 offered full shade from the sun. Good or bad depending on your need for direct sun while on your balcony. Oh, the room included access to the lounge on the 12th floor where breakfast and evening drinks and nibbles are available. Recommendation: stick with beer. Oddly, too much of the food in this lounge was of mediocre quality. Also, folks from other than the two floors dedicated to the Royal beach Club had access to the lounge. Not a problem given the space available. The grounds of the hotel are absolutely gorgeous and so very lush. Pool areas are attractive save for the fencing used at times to keep Westin guests from using the Regina Beach Club pool? Although all pools are open to all guests of the hotel and Regina Beach Club (at least while we were there), stripped towels are only dispensed to Club members. Hmm. Piped Muzak near the beach....fine if you're in an elevator, not so fine given a very nice complex on the beach in Mexico.

The Westin Puerto Vallarta is a beautiful property in a lovely location. A number of pools and activities, steps from the beach. The lay-out is odd with lots of long, empty halls. We arrived on foot and came in the lower level. We wandered around looking for staff. Desks that looked like they should have a concierge or something were dark and empty. We finally found a maid who directed us to an elevator. From there we located the front desk. We were early, and I was grateful our room was ready (just....sterile cleaning agent smell and wet, ceramic floors...but at least it was ready for us to drop off our luggage). I was disappointed when, the day earlier, I called to officially arrange early check-in and no one was even interested in taking my name. They just said, pretty much: if it's ready, it's ready, if not, it's not. No further discussion and this put me off. The room is just a room with bed(s). Nothing special, though the bathroom is nice with its soaker tub and tiled shower. The reason I cannot give this hotel a good review is because of their disregard for the comfort of their guests when they allowed an extremely blaring, bass-thumping, outdoor beach wedding to keep the hotel up all night. This was unacceptable! We would have preferred a room facing the highway than have to deal with that ever again. We had our balcony doors closed, put in earplugs and did what we could to get a few hours' rest before our 5am wake-up call to head to the airport. My friend even called down to the desk and was told they wedding had the facility rented until 2am. The room was vibrating. At one point I took my earplugs out as I didn't want to sleep through the alarm and some child was screaming - it seemed like right outside our door. That isn't something the hotel can control, I agree...if not for better walls. As a Starwood member I am very disappointed that this hotel is in this chain.

Room Tip: Find out ahead of time if there is a private party!
