I understand where people might be coming from in these other reviews, but I enjoyed my stay there. The room was comfortable and safe, the location was great and the staff, at least to me, was real nice. And staying there enabled me to have a few extra pesos for coronas!

The smell people talk about was really just kind of a musky scent that I didnt pay much attention to. Wasnt nasty or anything. The rooms are small, but if you're in Puerto Vallarta and spending all your time in the room there's something wrong with you.

One of the drawbacks I had was the "family" atmosphere they advertise is definitely true. At any given time during the day, there were a gazilion little kids running around the pool area splashing and making a racket. So dont plan on relaxing much by the pool.

Other than that I would definitely stay there again.

My husband and I stayed here for one week, and although, not the worst hotel I've ever stayed at, certainly not what we had been led to expect. We waited in the heat to checkin for over 20 minutes, and when we wanted to ask additional questions, and for a map of the city, etc. the man working registration was quite put out. There was no concierge to direct such questions, as we were later told, there wasn't enough money to pay a concierge (there was a concierge stand). The first room we were brought to was no more than 8x9 feet, and the air-conditioning was not working, so they brought us to a different room. As i found out later that evening (and for the next 6 nights) the bed was broken-- a large piece of the thick wire from the innerspring was jutting out of the mattress, and wounded me in the foot! I didn't bother to complain, as there were perpetual lines by the registration. A couple of nights later, we called housekeeping (twice) to request a couple of extra pillows. They still hadn't arrived by the time of our checkout....
The place was overrun with children running around and screaming until midnight. One couldn't swim in the "adults-only" (so it was posted) pool, as there were so many kids in there.
We found out our last night, that this hotel has a sister hotel only a half a block away that is for adults only, but noone ever offered us this option. One would have thought that by checkin, upon seeing a couple alone (we have kids, but didn't take them on this vacation), it might have been mentioned as an alternative. It certainly would have made our stay much more pleasant.

Very so so Hotel, and far to many kids in the pool area.
Very out dated furnishings and worn, very moldy smelling room, kitchen had not much to work with, had to put coffee pot in kitchen sink to get to the 1 plug in the kitchen.
Had a front ocean view room, very tiny seating area on balcony.
The food was so so, the help was so so, the location was ok.
I just felt after being in Guadalajara for a week, this Town and Hotel was out for all they could get you for.

We spent three nights at Playa Los Arcos in July and enjoyed our stay. We booked the one bedroom oceanview suite directly with the hotel. Our rate was $113 and the room was much better than we expected. We had read a lot of the negative reviews and were expecting a terrible room. But our room, (room 403), included a kitchen, dining area, and bedroom that was ocean front. The room was clean and we didn't notice any mildew smells.

The location of the hotel is perfect. You are witihin walking distance to the entire downtown/Malecon area. The pool area looked nice but it was very crowded during our stay. July is also high season for Mexican tourists, so the hotel was full of people enjoying their summer break. (lots of families)

We didn't eat or drink at PLA because it offered an "all-inclusive" option and we were afraid that we would get low end buffet food. The only negative was at 6PM they pack up all of the beach chairs. This was very strange. But other than that, we had a great time and would stay there again.

We had read numerous complaints on this board regarding the resort. I think the key is to not book the "el cheapo" room. Room 403 was great.

We have a full trip report with more pictures posted on our sunnytripreports.com site.

My sister and I had a great time. The staff was pleasant and very helpful. They have a reserved beach area with lounge chairs and umbrellas...a big necessity, it gets hot! We had a standard room facing the street but upgraded to an ocean view for $15/night more and it was worth it. Happy hour is great with the staff coming on the beach to deliver drinks. My sister needed to freeze ice packs for her medication and they brought us up a portable fridge with no hassle. Breakfast is good, the fruit is excellent. We didn't opt for the all you can eat trough buffet fest but others did. We ate dinner outside of the resort and there was some good places! We had a great time. If you are nice to the people they are nice to you. We saw some Americans carry on with a pompous and snotty attitude treating the locals like 2nd class citizens, not cool. You will have beach vendors approach you but at least they are not begging like the homeless do in the US. These people are working out in the extreme heat and making a living.

The two of us that went to Puerto Vallarta booked a two week all inclusive trip on itravel2000.com. This hotel was a real treat for us. A bus was provided for us at the airport that took us right to the door of the hotel. Our room (111) was just what we were hoping for, it had a balcony with a pool/ocean view and 2 double beds and a very adequate bathroom. The room smelt a little musty when we first arrived but a travel candle and opening the balcony door cured that in about 5 minutes and we did not notice the smell for the rest of our trip. The beds were fine, not like our beds at home but still lead to good night's sleeps every night. The pool and beach area were great. The pools were maintained beautifully and we spent most of our time on the pool chairs instead of on the beach because the vendors could not bother you inside the resort but swarmed you when you were on the beach. Beach towels were provided and we made sure that we always got towels the night before so that we had them early in the morning to put on the pool chairs to save ourselves a spot. Something to remember is that the towel service doesn't begin until 10 so keep the towels overnight to stake out your chairs in the morning. The buffet offered at the hotel was great, especially the italain buffet night. After a week a few things did get pretty repetitive but then we found out that ordering off the snack menu was also included so things were better from there, this menu included burgers, hot dogs, ect. The service was great by all members of the staff, bar, waiters, maids, front desk, maintenance. A couple of times our key card stopped working but it was fixed very quickly and the tv remote at one point and the maintence was there in about 2 minutes to fix the problem. We really loved the location of this hotel and spent most days wandering the flea markets and the malecon. We both felt very safe wandering around Puerto Vallarta as 2 25 year old women, with all the bad press that Mexico is getting right now, I have to say that we walked back to the hotel from the bars at 2 am and were completely safe, never once did we have an uneasy moment in the 2 weeks that we were there. We booked all of our excursions right at the hotel through our transat rep. They all were through a company called Vallarta Adventures which is a company I would do anything with again, the service and safety that was offered through this company was above and beyond and I highly recommend them. The tours that we chose to do were the pub crawl (Vamanous), The outdoor adventure which includes a mule ride, zipline, rappelling and hike, The Sea Lion/Dophin Adventure and the day trip to Yelapa. All in all we had an absolutely fabulous time and would go back to this location in a heart beat, I actually am thinking about going back within the year to the same hotel and taking my parents with me, because they would also love everything about it.

My girlfriend and I spent 4 nights on the Jalisco/ Nayarit coast in Mexico. Our first 3 nights we were in laid back Sayulita and San Pancho. For our last night we made the obligatory trip to Puerto Vallarta and had previously decided to stay at Playa Los Arcos because it was one of the cheaper hotels with an ocean front and a pool available.

The staff was pleasant and nice but the hotel left much to be desired. It appears as if this property might have been a premier property 30 years ago, and not much has been done since then to improve it. The room appeared old, the bed was uncomfortable, and I think they may have used the same bed comforter from the early 80's. The pool and jacuzzi were okay. At least there was a beach front at the hotel and we were able to avoid are disappointing room by hanging out at the beach most of the day.

The one thing the hotel has going for it, in my opinion, is that it is in the heart of old downtown Vallarta, and away from the way more touristy hotel zone. You can walk around very easily and get somewhat of a more authenitc 'Mexican' experience than you can in the hotel zone. If you feel like a great dinner in downtown in Vallarta we ate at the delicious Trio restaurant, it's not Mexican per se, it's mediterranean inspired with Mexican accents, highly recommended and worth the price.

In summary though. We wouldn't stay at Playa los Arcos again. As good as a deal as it seemed at the time, the hotel's quality still does not match the bargain price.
