Hacienda Buenaventura Hotel & Mexican Charm All Inclusive
Ranked #19 of 123 Hotels in Puerto Vallarta
Reviewed March 23, 2009

We loved this hotel.Upon arriving were a little disappointed by the rooms as they are very old and had only stayed in 5 star hotels before, but were very clean ,beds were comfortable. You get used to them quick as you never spend much time in them. The hotel is very charming in authentic Mexican style decor. All the staff were amazing attentive to all your needs, we felt like family by the time we left.We truly loved our vacation there and plan to return. We never saw any bugs or got sick there. The food was great ,the pool was clean. After reading previous reviews we were somewhat worried but now having stayed there would go back in a flash. We made amazing friendships with fellow Canadians and Americans and also loved the staff.Hope to go again.

Never seen so many extremely differing reviews for the same property. Almost cancelled our trip due to so many negitive reviews. Just returned from Hacienda today with my wife and can say that Hacienda must be reading these reviews and working on the negitive items. We have done 13 All Inclusive: 4 Mex (2-5*), 5 Cuba (3-4*), Egypt (4*), Tunisia (2.5*), Jamaica (5*) Dom Rep (3*), .
This place has average to very good service based on our experience with other properties.

Our take on previous complaints:
Beach access and Construction Workers: The beach and beach bar restarant is located about a block from the front door of the hotel. You can walk or take a shuttle van that holds 10 people. An average paced walk takes about the same time as the van. The walk is along the road that runs thru the contruction site - the site is fenced on both sides of the road. From Mon to Fri there are about 300 well paid men and women highrise construction workers at the site. When one whistles they all whistle without even looking to see what they are whistling at. 90% are smiling and whistling without taking their eyes off their work . They also whistle at men and tourists who laugh and joke with them while walking along the road. Never heard of anyone forgoing the beach bar/ grill due to the contruction workers.

Food: Mostly Mexican. Chicken, Fish, Pork, Rice, Tortillias. Burgers, Fries, Dogs

Reptiles: 2 Igunas (Hotel Pets) 1 small lizard, No lizards spotted inside hotel. At all other AI Props we have been at there have always been small timid insect eating lizards inside the hotel

Go with reasonable expectations and you probably won't be dissapointed. 1st time vacationers from Can and US will need to adjust a bit to domestic standards or pay more for 4.5* to 5*

This hotel was awful - by far the worst hotel I have stayed in in Mexico. I went there with a group of 19 people from the UK who were in Mexico for my wedding and it was without a doubt the worst part of the trip (19 hour flights included). Couple of reasons:

1. Check in was unbelievably slow. Awesome after a 6 hour bus journey to be standing in that heat wait for the staff to bother themselves.

2. Rooms were not clean. At least one of our party found cockroaches in the rooms and another found someone still painting his room when he arrived. They also smelled of damp.

3. All the rooms were the same size. We had booked a combination of doubles, twins, triples and quadruples. The triple was one three-quarter size double bed and a single bed. This was identical to the double. The quadruple was 2 three-quarter size double beds.

4. The rules on swimming seemed to change nightly. The first night there were people in the pool until 3am singing and shouting. The next night my Dad went in at about 10 and was told that they were going to fine him 500 pesos and call the police.

5. The "beach club" was just the other side of a building site.

The only positive was that we were only there for 2 nights. Those of our party who stayed in PV longer moved to another hotel. Just glad that we did not opt for the all inclusive because there are some nice restaurants in PV.

Thank you very much for your comments. They always help us to constantly improve the quality of our service. Please find below the follow up and answers to each issue mentioned in your e-mail:

1. Check in was unbelievably slow. Awesome after a 6 hour bus journey to be standing in that heat wait for the staff to bother themselves. The check in might have been slow because the whole party of 8 (eight) rooms requested, upon arrival, rooms close or next to each other and we had to change assignment of the rooms in order to try to assign the rooms as closest as possible to each other. The other reason was that your check in to the hotel was around 2:00 p.m. and our official check in time is at 3:00 pm, therefore we did not have all rooms ready at that time and the Front Desk personnel was coordinating with Housekeeping to give priority to the rooms that have already arrived in order to get these rooms cleaned as soon as possible. I do not know if this was maybe the reason you thought staff did not matter or did not attend you properly, as you would expect, and we sincerely apologize for that.

2. Rooms were not clean. At least one of our party found cockroaches in the rooms and another found someone still painting his room when he arrived. They also smelled of damp. We have never had any complaints regarding the cockroaches or any other insects in the rooms and we have daily, weekly and monthly fumigation program in order to prevent these type of things. Anyway, after having read your comment we have doubled the attention to our fumigation process. You room was fumigated, according to our check list, one day before your arrival. As far as the smell is concerned I have personally checked all eight rooms yesterday and you can perceive the humidity smell in two of them. We have machines that absorb humidity and we put them yesterday in these couple of rooms in order to fix the problem. This smell should have been detected before you had checked in and unfortunately this was not the case so we do apologize again for this inconvenience.

3. All the rooms were the same size. We had booked a combination of doubles, twins, triples and quadruples. The triple was one three-quarter size double bed and a single bed. This was identical to the double. The quadruple was 2 three-quarter size double beds. Our hotel has the following type of rooms: Rooms with 2 Double Beds, Rooms with 1 Double and 1 Single and Rooms with 1 King Size Bed, the room assignment always depends on the availability of the Hotel at the arrival time, and what we guarantee is the type of the room our guests pay for but we can not confirm in advance the type of bed inside the room.

4. The rules on swimming seemed to change nightly. The first night there were people in the pool until 3am singing and shouting. The next night my Dad went in at about 10 and was told that they were going to fine him 500 pesos and call the police. The Rules on swimming are the same everyday and for everybody, unfortunately some guests do not follow these rules and we have to send the security personnel to deal with this kind of situation. We have never charged $500 pesos to anybody, it is not part of our policy, I have checked our computer system and this charge was never made during your stay at the hotel. I have also never received any report that the police was called either.

Our main goal is to assure complete guest satisfaction. Obviously in this case we failed to do so. I assure you we have taken all necessary measures in order to prevent inconveniences you have experienced during your stay at the hotel to happen again. I sincerely hope you can give us another opportunity to host you again in the future. I will personally make sure you have the most enjoyable vacation with us.

We stayed for 1 week with two children ages 3 and 9. All of us loved it, very clean, staff was amazing anything you needed they did it for you. I saw a group of girls ask the chef to make them Kraft Dinner. (and he did) I honestly don't understand what people are complaining about.

Pool is nice, food was good but on one night we did venture to a restaurant. Staff was always cleaning and smilling.

We've already talked about going back next year.

If the sounds of police/ambulance sirens is how you enjoy to be woken up, walking through a construction site while Mexicans whistle at your girlfriend, and spending a day hugging the toilet bowl from last nites catch of the day is how you like to spend your vacation then the Hacienda is the place to be. One more note don't lose your wristband or this will set you back $25.00-50.00 U.S. dollars even if its not your fault. The only plus were the staff whom were great.

The staff at this smaller resort are amazing. Right from the front desk to the wait staff, bartenders, and the activities guys, all amazing. David and Victor the Activities staff work hard to make sure everyone has a great time, from water-size at noon, to the 3pm black-jack tournament. David even comes down to the beach for activities as well, and not just at pool-side. He showed me how to Kayak and I loved it. The food was okay, fresh, and a good variety. Every morning you could have an omelette to order, as well as fresh fruit, pancakes, sweet bread etc. At dinner time they had something different each night on the grill, from whole fish, to pork skewers to prawns. The wait staff are right there to bring your drinks, and bring whatever you ask for. The drinks are great and they keep them coming. (love the Miami Vice!!). The pool is clean and nice to just lay back and sun yourself with a beverage in hand. This is more an older crowd we found, with very few kids, and the ones that were there were really well behaved, (no screaming or running kids here). The rooms were okay, nice and clean, and considering you basically are only sleeping in the room, they do just fine. No bugs, or lizards in our room, or none that I heard about in anyone's room. The walk to the beach is just what everyone says, through construction, but this is not the hotels fault. It is a little adventure, plus they have a shuttle service. There is a nice lady, Marina in the lobby that helps with booking excursions, we went on the Santa Marina cruise to snorkeling, and horseback-riding up to a waterfall. Great price, great fun, all drinks and lunch, breakfast included. Traveling to town was no problem as the cab and bus-pickup is right outside the hotel door. Even though the hotel is right on the main road, you do not hear the traffic noise once inside the resort., its as if you were far away from anyone. We met a lot of nice people, and a lot of fellow Canadians. Friendly staff, Friendly guest, great Hotel and Great Mexican experience. Will definitely go back.

I have just returned from PV March 8th 2009, and had a wonderful time-i wasn't too sure what to expect when we arrived at the hotel, but once inside, the staff were absolutly incrediable! i work in the hotel industry, and i have NEVER seen the quality of service that they provided anywhere else...even in 5 star hotels. The room was okay, we did ask for a little extra cleaning, but also tipped accordingly. There was a mention from a previous traveller of the construction that is going on by the beach, and the workers coming down to the beach on their break: unfortunatly the construction has nothing to do with the Hacienda, therefore it is out of there control. As for the workers coming to the beach on their breaks-all beaches in are public, and are therefore open to everyone-if you don't like it then stay by the pool!! We found the food to be good, but by the end of the trip, it started tasting the same. We didn't find that there were really too many families at this hotel, there were only about 3, and the kids were well behaved-maybe we just lucked out, and their parents actually watched the kids instead of just letting them run willy nilly. Check out the cruises/horseback riding to the waterfalls-great fun. There was also mention of a safe in the room in a previous review-we didn't have a safe in ours, but they had safety deposit boxes at the front that we left everything in. I guess if you like your 5 star hotels in 1st world countries, this is not for you. If you don't mind having a "mexican experience", fantastic wait staff, and aren't going to expect the comforts of home, i would highly recommed this place!

p.s. it was great to meet all my fellow Canadians-the resort was about 80% Canadians during our visit so that was kind of nice to meet people from my own city etc...
