“Better than expected”
Reviewed December 24, 2013

My husband and I were in PV for six weeks. We stayed in several different places in PV, Nuevo and Yelapa. The Tropicana turned out to be our favorite. The first impression was how great the staff is from bellhop ,check in staff, maids ,waiters ,bar man, pool boys everyone was friendly and helpful. The rooms were nicer than expected with ocean view balcony. We had no problems with the bed, it was one of the more comfortable ones on this trip. Really nice beach area with palapas. We tried the restaurant a couple of times for breakfast and once for dinner. The food was good and the prices were inexpensive. Happy hour prices 5-6 pm were cheap. You can't beat the location, close to beach clubs for lunches and other restaurants for dinner. With the exchange rate the room worked out to be around $70.00 per night. We will be staying there again next year.

From the street you can't see that this is the place. Not a 5* but worth the try.
I have really nice room with ocean view.

Close to everything you will be charmed. There are so many good places around that I'm sure you will find what you are looking for

I have been travelling to PV for 27 years including a time living there many years ago...I have pretty much stayed everywhere. The last 10 years I have mostly rented condos. When we saw the Tropicana was the same price as air only we couldn't resist trying it. I cannot say enough about this place, BUT you have to understand the rooms are very very basic ...so yes does it need a lot of upgrades...of course. So don't go there looking for granite counter tops and marble bathrooms. The pool areas are meticulous. The staff were beyond efficient and friendly. We had outstanding service from everyone. The price of poolside food and drinks was cheap. They have the beach area well organized. I would stay there again for sure. As we were leaving they looked like they were organizing some new furniture, so I am sure slowly they'll get their upgrades done. Everyone mentions the beds being so hard, We Had no problem with them...just know they are the classic Mexican style with the mattress resting on a cement base with no boxspring.

Room Tip: We asked for oceanfront and they readily obliged...view was awesome! Yes they are building new condo...

Love the location and the pool ambiance but the hotel has so many rooms and it is under repair, at full capacity it would be crowded. Lots of stairs so be prepare. In my section the elevator was not working. Service was friendly with some waiters and servers beings very good but some were not. Hotel has dated furniture and shows its age, but because it was fairly empty I had a good time. A little pricey for a 3 star. Food was good but the drinks so so. The margaritas were the best.

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony face the beach. Nice views.

I do not like putting negative reviews on trip-advisor, please look at my other reviews to see that I'm not a professional complainer. I try to give a honest and realistic review.

We have been to Puerto Vallarta before and have always been very happy with our accommodation. We had walked past the Tropicana in the past and thought that it looked a nice Hotel, and that why we booked it.

When we arrived at the hotel the concierge greeted us and was very persistent in assisting us with our bags, even though we didn't require their services. The check in was fine and when we got to our room we were very pleased. it was a nice bright room with a balcony which suited us.

At 8am the next morning we were woken up with lorries and major noise that goes with a major building development. Which is taking place very close to the hotel. After 3 days I could take no more and went down to reception to politely ask if we could be moved to a quieter room away from the development. Initially the lady on reception tried to say it was cars pulling up at a small shop across the road. She didn't want to acknowledge that it was the noise from a major construction site. She then phone a manager, when the call was complete she offered us the choice of two rooms. Both room were on the same side of the hotel as we were already on and one room was actually even closer to the construction site. The other was the same distance as our current room, just on a lower floor. Both rooms were actually smaller than our current room and with only one bed and no balcony!
When I said that both room were unsuitable. That was the end of the discussion, they made no further effort to assist us or make our stay at their hotel pleasant. The hotel was not even 25% occupied.

We were awake EVERY day at 8am apart from the Sunday (no building work however the shop is open) we stayed 12 days

We only had one meal in the restaurant. The food and the service was very below average and appeared to be disjointed as if the staff and restaurant had just opened for the first time. The milk was put in a wine glass, and the coffee cups were cracked. This is a health hazard! On the plus side no tops up were offered or asked if every thing was ok.
We never visited again during our stay and by the looks of it never did anyone else.

One morning we were booked on a trip and went down to the concierge to ask for a taxi to take us to the marina for a trip. I asked the concierge to help me with this, I also showed his the booking conformation to help him, his only reply was "no speak English" I went up to a taxi directly out side the hotel and sorted myself with no problems.

A few day later a small group of friends were siting on a wall while waiting for us in the hotel foyer and were asked to move on and not loiter in the entrance of the hotel. I find it amusing that the concierge can speak English when it suits them.

The wifi is very unreliable and is only available within a very Small area in the reception if there is more than 1 person trying to use it then you got no chance. You better off visiting a local bar or restaurant as other establishments don't seam to have a problem.

The room was cleaned every day however several time we were left with no towels.

This could be a really nice hotel however there seams to be something missing. There appears to be lots of staff and management standing around doing nothing but not willing to provide a service to the paying customers.

We will be visiting Puerto Vallarta again but we will not staying at the tropicana again.

Perfect for it's location, beach, property and staff. No wifi. Easiest to book directly with the hotel.
We also felt we were almost the only ones there (good). But they were busy repainting everything and making any repairs in anticipation of the upcoming high season.

This hotel is very basic, what really helps it it's the location, away from downtown with a beautiful beaches and close to everything.
We have visited this hotel since 1980 and the service has been going down like the owners do not pay attention to a beautiful place. They have been building rooms left and right and customer service has suffered.
Still recommended to stay if you do not need luxury, this will do for the money and the place is clean and acceptable.
