“Excellent value”

Went on an last minute eight day Delta Vacation trip (hotel, air and airport transfers) to avoid Xmas and picked the Tropicana in Puerto Vallarta based on reviews and cost. The Tropicana exceeded our expectations. Our first room ("Superior" category) was nice, of generous size with a balcony and full ocean view but, the toilet was malfunctioning. We were offered another room of the same category or to upgrade for a reasonable charge to a two bedroom suite on the top floor and with a balcony overlooking the beach at one end and the verdant hills at the other. We picked the upgrade and were very happy with everything. All the staff at the hotel was extremely accommodating, the hotel was kept in tip top shape and the rooms were spotless. The location was perfect right on the beach and within walking distance to everything in town. It's not a luxury property, however, it does not at all have the look and feel of a "budget" property but rather that of a large, comfortable middle-of-the road class property that is exceptionally well maintained. The only drawback is the lack of internet access in the rooms but with free wi-fi in the lobby, this is not a huge issue. The lobby has the advantage of being large, furnished with easy chairs and sofas, with one side open to the pool area, ocean and breezes giving you an outdoors feel. Considering all you get for your money, I would definitely go back to the Tropicana again!

Room Tip: The higher floor, the better. It's worth the modest cost to upgrade from "Standard" to...

I have stayed at the Hotel Tropicana on my two visits to PVR. It is a great location and a good value for the money. The hotel is well maintained. The rooms are clean and serviceable but not elaborate. If you are looking for a five star hotel with a ton of amenities, you should consider another hotel. However, if you plan on spending the majority of your time exploring PVR (as well you should) rather than staying in your hotel room, I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

I've been staying at the Trop several times a year for over a decade...it's hard to beat the location on the beach. This is not a five star hotel, but it is more than adequate with regular, superior and junior suites. Each year, I see improvements being made. The most recent one is a new pool which was being finished a couple of weeks ago (Dec. 2011.). The staff is superb and always welcoming. Worth checking out!

we stayed for 14 days at the begining of Dec.2011 The Hotel staff were very curtious and helpfull. The rooms were nothing short of spotless everyday. On our last night was the staff party, which yes the music was loud, so we sat on our deck and enjoyed the music while the staff enjoyed their party!
Great location to the restuarants, and a very nice lady up the block sets out a small table with Coffee and fresh juice every morning. We only had lunch at this hotel, so cant comment on the rest of the menu. The waiters on the beach were excellent ( many thanks Umberto) and Marsella the security for the beach area is very helpfull.
Would stay again.

Stayed for 10 days in early December, Hotel was clean , Staff very helpfull . Paid 770 pesos for room on 5th floor. We looked at other places nearby such as San Marino and Los Arcos but Tropicana was better value . One major annoyance while there was a staff party on the restaurant patio. The canned music was so loud that sleep was impossible .. The big amplifier was turned off at midnight but music kept going till 1:30 .. My discussion with front desk accomplished nothing but a weak Iḿ sorry response . This is annual event.A woman I talked with had been at Hotel in 2010 and said previous party went till 3am with equal noise level as had a wedding party. Compliants by her to Hotel Manager did have a days charge waived .I got response from front desk that only the general mgr had power to do that. This is Mexico .. and they follow a different drummer. Our room had breakfast included . Coffee lovers will quickly find Deeś Coffee shop across street from San Marco the place to go to. Hotel coffee is one step above dishwater, If you are in PV to enjoy the beaches and the ocean then this hotel is great. All the hotels take over the beach in front of their property so if you were staying a block away using the beach is more difficult.
We enjoyed having a unrestricted view of the bay. sunsets were gorgeous, Traffic noise was replaced by constant sound of the surf crashing on beach, There are dozens of restaurants within a 10 minute walk. We spent from 120 pesos to 700 for dinner. Prices drop a bit away from the beach.. This was for us a better choice than a all-inclusive as we enjoyed going to different restaurants nearby.. When you check in ask about any weddings or large events that are booked during your stay and tell them in advance if the party goes on past 11pm you will want to either be invited to share in the festivities or have a free nightś stay..

The Tropicana is in a great location, steps away from mnay great restaurants and shops. Room was large with a wonderful ocean view. Very clean, as the entire hotel was. Staff was friendly and always wanted to please. The beach was clean and had plenty of room between palapas and chairs. It would have been nice if they had some entertainment on site for guests. Food was good and very inexpensive. A/C and water pressure worked fine...plenty of hot water too. We plan to return.

The Tropicana never disappoints you, no matter what time of year you stay. Our 2 week stay in Oct/Nov was again a pleasure. The staff, from the front desk, to the bellhops, and the maids are just so friendly and helpful. The hotel is always clean and spotless. They are always painting or repairing to make the grounds look great. Fantastic beach. Walking distance to a lot of great restaurants. Took a cab twice in 2 weeks. Once from the airport, and once back to the airport.Had a standard room with an ocean view. Very clean, and yes, the beds are to my liking, very hard. No this is not the Hilton, or the Marriott. Just a good hotel in a great location. The only negatives with the Tropicana are, the drinks are really expensive, and not all that good. And the beach chairs have much to be desired.
