For us, the location was perfect. Los Muertos beach, all of Viejo Vallarta/Zona Romantica and Centro with in walking distance. Numerous places to eat, all excellent, within walking distance, as well as shopping and other activities like water taxis, parasailing, swimming, etc. The staff are uniformly excellent and very helpful. The place is spotlessly clean. They were in the process of constructing a second pool during out stay, which was a bit noisy at times, but will only make the place better. The rooms are in need of redecorating and updating. Yes, the mattresses are quite firm but that seems to be a thing with Mexican hotels. They are not at all uncomfortable. The air conditioner in our room had really only one speed - maximum. It is not luxurious, but is comfortable. The place is, however, a real bargain. If you come to Mexico, you aren't going to spend all of your time in the room or at the hotel anyway. This place is a good budget choice.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view. Definitely choose the superior rooms.

We went in the off season (July) and found it very quiet and relaxing. We had a 2 bedroom suite which was a little funky. The room ac units just barely worked and the kitchen really wasn't useful as there weren't enough dishes, no dishsoap or towels, no microwave. However the price was excellent (just over $100/day), the location was great, the staff were wonderful, the grounds immaculate. The beach had palapas and bar/food service. This is a nice location, but be advised that the pier was washed out so some tours that would pick folks up from the Playa del Muertos pier are unable. Also, the main malecon is under construction as well.

Looking to avoid the walled gardens and buffets of the resorts? This is a wonderful low key location on the beach near "restaurant row" and within walking distance to all the interesting hotspots in town, cultural, historical, and gastronomical.

We went back to The Tropicana for a week after Christmas and were there over New Years. You can't beat the location of this hotel in old town PV. It is about as far south as you can get before going up the hill towards the highway. It is in a somewhat quieter part of town (because it is up the hill from most of the restaurants and downtown attractions, but it is easily within walking distance of Centro or downtown. The Tropicana is next door to The Blue Chairs gay hotel, so it is in a very "rainbow" part of town. The beach is nice and there are lots of palapas to sit under if you want some shade. There is usually an employee who will set chairs and a small table up for you. If you walk a bit to the south and up a small rocky hill, you will come across a quieter, often desserted little cove that you might like.
This hotel is definitely not luxurious, but has everything that you might need---unless you like all-inclusive. It is quiet around the pool and has the option of having a breakfast plan. The breakfast was only "ok" and was pretty random in terms of what you would find in the buffet line up but we didn't really care that much. The waiters are friendly and will give both poolside and beach service. The Tropicana has a nice open air lobby with a tv and some chairs.
The rooms (well we only saw the lowest price rooms) are spartan but clean and usually have a lovely beach/ocean view. We had a room with a double and single bed and found that the bed was quite small for the two of us--I would upgrade to a room with a king size bed next time. The bed, as with most beds in Mexico was somewhat hard, although we were usually so tired from the sun and fun that we slept well anyways. Right across the street is a little store where you can buy a styrofoam cooler and ice and all the beer and soft drinks you might want. We did this and brought our own drinks to the beach with us--much cheaper as we paid about $1/beer in the store.
Of course this may not be everyone's cup of tea for a holiday, but we were happy and would go back a third time to the Tropicana. Location wise, it is within walking distance of so many amazing restaurants---I would NEVER do all-inclusive in PV as you would miss out on the great walks, the chance to explore different neighbourhoods while you hunt for funky restaurants.

Very nice hotel, but some weird encounters while there.. Me & my family rented the 2 penthouses (rooms 602 & 603) on floor 6, and we would have doors open even though we locked them and heard things fall like someone pushed them.... Also some footsteps at night. Overall we had a great experience.

This is a great hotel! The service was superb and the room was perfect. We had the most perfect view of the Bay of Banderas and it was overlooking Playa Los Muertos. I would and will stay at this hotel again in the future.

Very nice and quiet hotel (at least in the summer). The staff was great and helpful. The grounds are beautiful. Micheladas in the palapa were heavenly. Nice clean beach with service and palapas for shade. We had a suite with a kitchen, but wouldn't bother next time. There were not enough dishes, no other accessories for cooking such as dish soap, towels, etc. No microwave either. As mentioned, the beds were indeed like old futons (rock hard). Wireless is only downstairs in the lobby, but it is open and looks out over the ocean, so a nice place to 'surf'.

Room Tip: some of the rooms have been remodeled.
