Dilemma 1: Where to go? Dilemma 2: Where to stay? My husband and I were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary and finally chose Mazatlan which filled the bill perfectly - there are not enough good things we can say about the city.
Then, we made an even better choice and that was to stay at Loro de Oro. We chose to stay in the suite which is magnificient. It has way more space than we needed, a beautiful bathroom, beautiful furniture, authentic appointments, adequate kitchen, etc. (better than home). There are lots of fans that kept the rooms comfortable. (There is air conditioning but was not needed during our week.)
Then there is location!! It could not be much better. Plaza Machado is about 1/2 block away. We went there every evening and found that after an exhausting day of walking and walking that we felt we were experiencing Matazlan at its finest and were able to be rejuvenated. Although there were tourists, there were many locals doing the same as us.
Restaurants abound and we were able to enjoy the amenities of the historic district. It was perfect weather for walking and we did walk - to the lighthouse one day and the "golden zone" on another as well as many other shorter jaunts. We felt safe and secure, including at night. Taxi transportation is cheap and riding local buses was easy, too. Each morning we were awaked by the bells from the Cathedral.
And last, but not least, are the hosts. Tony and Lucy are wonderful and do everything they can to make your stay unforgettable. Even though the restaurant, Te Amo Lucy's Taqueria y Mas, was closed during our stay, Lucy prepared a very special, romantic dinner for our 50th celebration. It was the best meal we had in Mazatlan. Thank you, Lucy.
Put Loro de Oro 1st on your list! We will go back, but for a longer stay.
