On this, my eighth trip to Maz since 1978 (prev was 11yrs ago) I chose to live "downtown" instead of near the gold zone. It was wonderful and was a Mexican experience and where the action for the local folks happens. This time the Zona Dorado was really really quiet and only a shadow of its former self but the Malecon at the Olas Altos beach area was lively with locals and expats jogging and walking their lap dogs. Weekends esp had crowds and many food vendors near the "big flag pole" where the divers perform. Get a Papas Locos (super baked potato) and try the frozen strawberries and cream in the downtown area. The only worry is "trippers" are everywhere waiting to cause you to stumble so you cannot enjoy the old architecture to its fullest as you walk!

Old Mazatlan's main square with its beautiful architecture and restored buildings is a must see. The 19th Century Cathedral, the Teatro Angela Peralta (refurbished opera house), two beautiful museums, art galleries and many restaurants with outdoor seating and live entertainment around the Plaza Mechado make this a place to appreciate and experience the wonderful history and culture of Mazatlan.

The Centro Historico in Mazatlan is wonderful. From the beautiful Plazuela Machado, surrounded by Parisian style cafes on the street, live music in the evenings, and lovely restored colonial buildings to the Olas Altas beach and bay a few blocks away that makes one think this must be what the French Riviera was like 60 years ago before tourism and jet setters destroyed much of its charm--we loved it. We will be going back!
