“Terrific Tortilla Soup”
Reviewed December 14, 2013

Lovely location on the beach, viewing Isla Pajaro and Isla Venedo. Pleasant, efficient service. Scrumptious tortilla soup, tasty squid "chicharon". We visited El Capitano for lunch and were very satisfied.

“Prepare to be accosted during your dinner”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Our taxi drivers recommended this place. Whether they really like it or have some other motivation, we'll never know for sure. The restaurant has an awesome beachfront view of the ocean and Deer Island. The food and service were average. Prices were average for the Golden Zone. What we'll remember most about our dinner was the thirty or so beach vendors that interrupted our dinner. We expect this on the beach, but not to such a degree while at the dinner table. The worst was a Mariachi band who came unsolicited to our table, and played 2 songs. We gave them 50 pesos (about $5) but they demanded 200 pesos. We said no, so there were some words, and they finally left. Meanwhile, the restaurant staff stood by and did nothing. Afterward we discussed this with our waiter who appeared to be the manager or owner and he said this was not the first time for this problem, but I wondered why the staff ignores it.

“Possibly Stopped By at the Wrong Time!”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

Prior to choosing "El Capitano" as one of our choice restaurants while in Mazatlan (about our 8th visit) I read the reviews on Tripadvisor (as I always do), unfortunately possibly we were just there on the wrong evening. It was a Saturday evening o/a six o'clock and we chose to sit in the area nearest the beach (mistake). Just over the wall on an outdoor patio there was a DJ waiting for a wedding party and he was playing the music so loud u literally could not talk. We did not want to be rude and leave so we decide to move up closer to the entrance of the restaurant which was not much better. In addition to that incident there was also a gentleman there trying to sell timeshares at Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay (we own two and definitely don't want another one). I would not say the food was outstanding nor was the service and more than likely would not go back. The entire situation was unfortunate because the previous reivews were rated very highly.

“Why Not?”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

We walking down the street between Tony's On the Beach and El CID El Moro Tower and saw El Capitino's new location, so we decided to give it a try. There is a large area to eat "inside". "Inside" meaning under the roof and some nylon sides. We decided to go on out and eat on the beach area. The service was very quick and good. They kept coming by to make sure that everything was OK. My husband and I had grilled shrimp and they were very good. The couple we were with had steamed oysters and a grilled steak. Both said the they were very good. We will most likely come back and give it another try next year. The view of the ocean was really what made the evening.

“A little Hidden Gem off the Beaten Path”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

We would have never found this restaurant if not for the taxi drivers! It's a place that we zipped by several times in taxis and never knew it was there. It's one of those places that is overlooked by most tourists. The night we dined there, we were the only gringos in the place.

It's an open air restaurant right on the beach -not much more than a big palapa, but don't go there for the decor - go there for the food! They specialize in seafood.

They serve free chips, dip and salsa. I ordered the guacamole which was just smashed avocados, so I asked for some pico de gallo and mixed it in. That made it great! The guacamole at the resort we were staying in was also just mashed up avocados but it was always sort of runny, not thick.

I ordered the Lobster Thermidor which is one of my favorite dishes. They served 2 small lobsters that were stuffed with lobster meat and a wonderful cheese sauce. It was served with rice and vegetables. My husband had the Garlic Shrimp which was scrumptious as well.

The only negative of this place is that the owner will talk your leg off about the Emerald Bay Resort and try to get you to go to a 90 minute presentation. You can brush him off easily though.
