“El Cid Castilla, all inclusive = Awesome time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2010

I travelled with my husband, sister, mother and young daugther (under two). We stayed at El Cid Castilla for 11 days.

We found the staff at the restaurants and buffets extremely kind, courteous, knowledgeable. We were very impressed with the breakfast buffet, and actually were so pleased with it we didn't venture to the ala carte restaurant for breakfast once! We were always well taken care of by a mesero named Mario. He consistenly made us feel like the most important people in the room, and was so kind to my daughter. Our rooms were always kept clean, and the facilities were always immaculate. We enjoyed the ala carte retaurants, although did not go to the Japanese one.
My one grevience with the food was lunch time. Only the buffet was avaliable at 12, and you had to wait until 1 for the restaurant. And the snack bar, la conchita, we were only allowed to order hamburgers and drinks. We found this a bit annoying, and always had to go back to the other snack bar on the other side of the pool to order from a selection of mostly deep friend snacks. While waiting till 1 was no big deal, it was difficult to coordinate that with my daughter who tends to get grumpy around that time.

I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't any heated pool that was shallow enough for young kids to play in. However, we purchased a floatie for her and she had a wonderful time. The main pools were very nice temperatures to swim in, regardless of the temperatures.

I also liked the location of this hotel. Very convenient for outtings and day trips.

We booked tours through pronatours.
We did the canopy tour (zip lining) through Huana Coa. We had a terrific time and the staff were fantastic. And also went on the Deer Island tour, which was very nice. Although, the offer snorkelling, the water is to murky to see anything. But the beach was beautiful, the lunch they served was great, and it was nice to get away from the mainland for a few hours.

Overall, we had an awesome time.

The hotel was very nice. Constantly being cleaned. Service was amazing. They are what made our vacation fantastc. We traveled with a very large group and they were very accomodating. The pool service was great and they kept the drinks coming. Food at the buffet was ok, the food in the restaurants was FANTASTIC! Would for sure come back!

We travelled in a group of 14 with family members aged 5-75. We were all placed in the same area of the hotel on the 4th floor overlooking the pool and ocean. The rooms were dated but fine and worked well for all of us. We had one problem with an air conditioner and they came to repair the problem within the hour. We all enjoyed the pool and were pleased that it was heated because the wind and weather was not great for our stay. The pool on the El Moro side was way too cold and hard to enjoy. We also found a chair or two by the pool and or the ocean that our whole group shared during the day. The swim up bar was key and thanks to Pedro who always tended our needs! The burgers and food served by the pool was the best food we had all week. Burgers, fries and chicken fingers made fresh and hot to order. The rest of the food was just OK in our minds. There was lots of variety but nothing was ever warm. Our A-la-carte experiences were nothing to remember either. An especially poor experience at the Japanese restaurant where we all got up and left our meals and proceeded back to the buffet because it was all cold and the service was terrible. Our final evening was a celebration for our parents 50th anniversary and we had a good experience. The food was better and service was fantastic. The manager made the night with his personal touch around our table personally making the spanish coffee and bringing out a cake for mom and dad. I think the food was better than most of our all inclusive experiences but nothing was HOT. We missed having a late evening bar service around the pool. There was not much to do if you did not attend the shows. Most shows that our family watched, they enjoyed. OH>.....before I forget, all the restaurants have the best fresh pasteries and buns! Breakfast's were our favorite meals during the week.
We all enjoyed the watersports such as boogie boarding, diving, para sailing, volleyball and sand castle making. The pedlars were deffinatley a problem and an eye sore, but I understand why they are there...........We all bought something from them!! This is how they make their living. The hotel tries to warn the patrons not to buy but we keep doing it. It is the same reason pigeons bother people in Central Park........we keep feeding them!
As for the time share.........After one firm NO to the time share people, they never bothered any of us once on the trip and we were sure not to ask the "information desk" any questions as this is where you get hastled.
For the price and ease of travel from Edmonton, we would recommend this hotel to our friends and family that want to travel to Mazatlan in the future. A big thank you to Julieta and Mr. Lopez for looking after the anniversary surprises for my parents!

Our family was delighted with our stay at El Cid Castilla from December 31, 2009 to January 7, 2010. Although we were budget conscious and booked a pool view room, we were upgraded to an ocean view without even asking! The room was amazing. It was quite large and very comfortable. Other than a wee bit of sand on the floor when we first checked in, it was kept immaculately clean. I have a bad back, but found the bed quite comfortable. Our children, aged 10 and 13, loved the pool and pool side activities. We all agreed that the food was good and the Ala Carte Restaurants were exceptional. (We especially loved the Argentine Restaurant - excellent beef!) My son was in awe of how he could order whatever he wanted to eat or drink or keep returning to the buffet! (I doubt it will be often - maybe never - that we allow him to order steak and lobster in a restaurant when we dine out locally. He sure appreciated the freedom to order whatever he liked.)
The service we received was amazing. We asked for drink and meal recommendations from staff and were given very good suggestions. The drinks were plentiful as we lazed by the pool and staff seemed very grateful for a small tip.
One morning we headed out very early to go deep sea fishing. Included in the all inclusive package were four very large brown bag lunches that we were able to take with us.
The time share salespeople in the hotel are very effective in trying to get you to see a presentation but a firm no thank you was all it took to have them leave us alone. I really did not find them bothersome and would say they were not as persistent as some time sales personnel I have encountered in other cities such a Las Vegas.
Since we came home, we have often been asked about our trip. On our recommendation, family friends are travelling there with their three children in late April. Some single women I know hope to visit El Cid within the month and today we decided that we were returning at Easter without kids to celebrate our anniversary. I am confident we will have another very enjoyable and memorable stay.

We had an absolutely great vacation at El Cid Castilla...we enjoyed it so much that we are taking our family back for Christmas.

The staff and management at this resort are exceptional....other resorts in North America and Mexico could take lessons. The management take a hands-on approach and they treat their staff well. The staff bend over backward to ensure that your holiday is perfect. Any suggestions you make are addressed. We had our drain back up when we drained the tub and within minutes the staff were there fixing it. They offered to move us, which we declined since we had unpacked. When we got back to our room, the drain was fixed, there was a note of apology for the inconvenience and there was a nicely arranged plate of fruit on our table.

We stayed on the 15th floor of the El Cid Castilla tower and the rooms were better than average (compared to hotels we stayed at in Cancun, Manzanillo, Cuba, Ixtapa and Puerto Vallarta. We enjoyed having a large balcony with a great view of the resort and ocean. This floor was always quiet.

The maid kept our room very clean and well stocked.

Raul Conteras and Netza Laaiza both management of food services, were very pleasant and were very involved ensuring that the food was handled properly and that there was plenty of food to be had. Raul is a hilarious guy and if it is busy he gets involved setting tables and pouring coffee. Netza is on the run the entire shift but he takes time to talk to guests to ensure that they have everything they need.

We were very satisfied with the food...the buffet was very good and there was always something different to choose from...plenty of salads and fruit...and a good selection of pasta, meats etc. The buns and desserts were excellent. The noon lunch at the beach restaurant had a smaller selection but there was always more than enough to eat.

We enjoyed the Mexican and the Italian a-la-cartes...and it was easy to reserve if you phoned early.

There were always plenty of lounge chairs at the beach and around the pool, and we enjoyed sitting in the beach restaurant to watch the beach activities.

If you are around the pool or on the beach find Adrian Estrada...he is a great guy and he is so funny. He will look after you very well.

For the breakfast buffet or noon buffet find Silvestre Morales -Silvestre is an excellent waitor. He will look after you in the finest style.

For the evening buffet Rueben Ruualeaba is the man. He has a great sense of humor and he ensures that you have everything you need.

We enjoyed the shows...these dancers are pretty good and they just don't dance, they spend their days working on the resort...

All in all we have no complaints about this hotel..are they the top class of hotel...probably not...but the price is excellent and the service you get is unbelievable.

We will go back many times in the future as this management is always looking for ways to improve.

We arrived at El Cid after a early morning flight to find that they had no reservation for us and the hotel was fully occupied. I have to tell you we booked our vacation through Apple Vacations and it was our honeymoon. We were disappointed and when the staff seemed confused and only talked in Spanish, it upset us only more. We had requested a king size bed and they had no rooms with a king size room. After a half a hour we were told that they had a room for us. They took us to the room and found the room had two small double beds. We said no this will not work. Again we waited and finally after an hour, they found us a room ocean front. We were excited about the ocean front only to find the room smelt so bad of mold and stale smoke. But we were tired and they said they had no other rooms for two days. We stayed in this room for two days and every day they said not today. no rooms. The room and the bedding smelt so bad of smoke and mold. Finally on the Sunday, they moved to us a room on the 9th floor. Nice large room but at the end of the building near the fans and a view of the roof below. No ocean view. Again no other rooms. Because we had booked a honeymoon package, we were to get champagne. Every night at 6:00 it was to arrive. Every night it did not happen. We would go down to the front desk and say no champagne. Finally the second last night, the champagne arrived.
I have to say the hotel is nice and clean. The staff is unreal. Especially Juan and Tomas at the pool. The pool was nice and warm. The food was just ok at the buffet but again it was buffet. The al carte were very good.
We did not like sitting on the beach. The hotel has to stop the peddlers from bothering you. They are always bugging you. We finally moved to the pool to relax. Sad because the beach is beautiful.
The time share people must go from the front lobby. They bother you as soon as you arrive and the following days. It is not right.
We would likely not stay there again as we prefer a higher class of hotel. But loved Mazatlan and the beaches.

Dear happytobesingle

Thank you so much for your review.
Steps should always be made to make the experience as positive as possible for the guest. This has not happened in your case and I would like to offer my sincerest apology for this.

The way you were treated when you arrived at the hotel by the reception staff I can only agree was highly unacceptable and unprofessional. There is no excuse for bad customer service and since El Cid Resorts are wellknown for its high level of customer service I am truly embarrassed that this was not the case here. Please be assured that the issue has been taken up with the reception staff.

I am sorry that the room smelt of old smoke if you had requested a non-smoking room.
Even if we do our best to make sure that guest respect the non-smoking signs in the rooms sometimes this is not the case.
I am sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations in so many different points.Your very detailed comments will certainly help us. Please rest assured that we are taking the appropriate measures to address the problem and prevent future occurrence.

We appreciate your sharing your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future. I will really appreciate if you contact me directly on mcovarrubias@elcid.com.mx.

First I must compliment the staff of the ElCid Castilla, they do their job well and are courteous, 10 out of 10 and for that we tipped good. We were in the 4 story units located by the pool, they are a bit dated and the heavy pebbled wall surface is tough to look at. when we entered the room there was a definite funky smell, like mold, it was most noticeable in the built in dresser drawers and one of the beds. We toughed it out. The building transfers sound easily so if you are not a late night partier 1:00 am) it can get quite noisey. What I have read on this review is that people have gotten a good deal on this place as we did. The buffet food was tasty and plentiful but pretty much what you would serve at dinner on a weekly basis. Potatoes, macaroni, chicken, pork, basic. The alacarte restaurants were a bit better, This was a budget priced holiday so its budget food and for that it was o.k. Lots of people eating their and I didnt see anyone getting sick, I wasn't at all. The buffet downstairs needs a makeover, i reminds me of a school or hospital cafeteria. This is the area they have entertainment nightly, very nice, they do a good job. The pools looked very nice and the swim up bar was nice. What we found annoying was the fact that there was not enough room for more lounging chairs in the sun by the pool, I didn't think the hotel was at capacity but all of the loungers were filled and you were sitting 12" away from the next person, to cozy for me. My wife is an early riser so she would reserve a few chairs with our towels, The beach front is nice and i don't know how early you have to get up to get these chairs under the palapa umbrellas but they were always taken? The first day we walked around both pools many times to find a spot in the sun and ended up in an isle way people walked by, annoying. not enough room. On the beach there are avaliable chairs in the sun and there is a boundary rope to keep the peddlers back but it is very difficult to relax knowing there are 30 peddlers looking at you and blocking the ocean view at any given time. I would like to know how these people would feel if we were at their house staring in their window , saying "want to buy a hat" while they ate dinner or were trying to relax. We love Mazatlan and have been there many times but they have to do something about the time share people as well. They are courteous and are only doing their job but if you are trying to go for a walk or see the shops, you run into one of these guys every block, it is a definite problem. We usually stay a the Playa which is nicer than the Castilla and never a funky smell. If they are not going to address the smell problems or the crowded pool problem then this is a great budget place for young people. We went all inclusive for $190.00 each more which was a good deal. Remember this is a "good deal resort" we would not go back to he Castilla again only because we can afford better but not because it was terrible. The only 3 1/2 star about this place was the staff. hey were a 5 star.
Thank you
We stayed in room 2066
P.S. Mazatlan does have some great restaurants
