My fiancé and I just got back from a week in Mazatlan where we stayed at the El CID Castilla. After the first three hours I was on the phone with West Jet Vacations trying to find a way home. It was like we had walked into Fort Lauderdale college spring break. Little did we know that it was Semana Santa, Mexico's version of Easter. It was insane! Thousands of people on the beach, you could barely move, bands playing every few feet, the noise was intense, it was very overwhelming. We spent the first 24 hours in our room. The party went on through the night. I was happy after two days once a lot of people checked out and we could finally leave our room. So there went the first two days of our trip. This hotel definitely likes its noise and music, so beware of that. You must be up by 6 am if you want a palapa on the beach or they are all gone. So that's what we did every morning. But we enjoyed our days on the beach sipping margaritas. The buffets were pretty good, but do NOT eat at the one under the tent that overlooks the ocean, it's not very good. La Cascada is great for breakfast, the omlets are fantastic! La Pergola is great for lunch! We made dinner reservations every night with the exception of one night. The sushi restaurant is fantastic! And make sure you order as much as you want if you are all inclusive! The Argentina restaurant was also a favourite! The Italian one was so-so. The restaurant staff was fantastic, make sure to tip them, they definitely deserve it! If you like ribs, go off site one night and visit the Fat Fish, amazing ribs, great price! Watch out for housekeeping staff if you are a woman who wears make-up. We got a call from customer service the one day telling us they were charging us 300 pesos for two towels because I had got make-up on them that housekeeping said they wouldn't be able to get out. I happened to know that day that housekeeping had just cleaned our room within the hour and there had not been time to launder the towels, so I fought this charge and insisted that they wash these towels, as I knew make-up would come out in the wash. Several days later we got a call back stating that we wouldn't be charged for the towels and that the fees were taken off our account. However, when we went to check out, the charges were still there and the customer service lady, Natalia, conveniently wasn't working that day. We almost missed our bus to the Airport. Thankfully, one of the managers helped out and we didn't have to pay, but ridiculous to say the least! Next was Bike Week! So a couple days of quiet! Luckily our room didn't face the street! Some of the guests rooms faced the street and they didn't get any sleep at night as the motorcycles ripped up and down the streets all hours of the night. All in all, it was an interesting week. Would we stay there again? If the price was right and there wasn't anything going on, maybe. But definitely do your homework before coming here. Other than that, it's family friendly, nice staff, good food and clean, two huge pools, lots of on site stores.
