I read ALL of the reviews of the Torres Mazatlan (TM) resort prior to coming and I have to say they were 100% accurate. Our visit was from 10/6/13 to 10/13/13 and was WONDERFUL. We went with another empty nest couple, all in our 50's, and had a super great experience. I give the 100% agreement and double-thumbs up with the following I gleaned with other reviews: 1) Warm/Friendly Staff - From the front desk to the pool area, we got to know the staff by name and they couldn't have been more friendly or genuine. We have traveled to other destinations in Mexico and this has been the ONLY one where I truly felt a personal connection to the staff. 2) Beautiful grounds and atmosphere that are well maintained. I loved the setup of the pool area because you could choose to be close to the ocean, restaurant, restrooms, sun, shade, umbrellas, etc. based on what you were looking for. Its not simply a pool surrounded by chairs...there are cool options. Personally, we always were opting for the ocean view so we could be sipping happy hour drinks while watching the sun setting each night. 3) I like the location of the resort being 10-15 minutes away from the Golden Zone action. We took several excursions into town via either the bus (stops right in front of resort) and the Pulmonias which are suped up large golf carts (only found in Mazatlan). Both were an experience (totally safe) in themselves and added to the atmosphere. The Pulmonias are fun because you can talk to the drivers and get a better feel for what Mazatlan is all about. In my opinion, part of the fun/adventure is getting there and we weren't disappointed. It's a gated resort so you felt safe as you entered and left as there was always hotel staff and security right there and you really didn't leave their sight until you were on your transportation.
Miscellaneous - 1. Internet is spotty. Always had a strong connection but didn't always have internet? Lots of waiting, disconnects and strange stuff that I associate with slow internet speed. That being said, my cell phone connected and downloaded my work e-mail enough that I was "connected" with home/work, but gave me plenty of excuse not to do work there! 2. Very few floaties for the pool provided by the resort and their store doesn't have any. Good news is that the town has a pretty good supply so its a good excuse to shop in the Golden Zone. If you are really particular about your type of floatie...would suggest you bring it with you. 3. Resort store is pretty good. It's like a little minimart crammed with items you'll probably need or forget to pack. Prices are good, but to go shopping elsewhere will costs money/time so we did our fair share of shopping there. 4. Palapa Restraurant - We really enjoyed this restaurant for many reasons: good food/service, convenience, reasonable prices, casual. We had a great evening where we went directly from watching the sunset from our pool chairs to sitting in the casual part of the restaurant with the beach windows wide open, ocean breeze blowing in, ocean surf about 75 feet away, setting sun/dusk and a delicious PRIME RIB special! Honestly, its hard to imagine how that's not just a spectacular day at a resort! Also, order a Spanish coffee delivered by Ismael for a great dessert drink delivered with a little flambeau show...it was truly fun.
I could go on and on, but would finish with that this is a great resort, indeed, based on the great staff and a pretty casual atmosphere. This is not a "Spring Break" type of atmosphere which we were very happy about, but we did have fun with the other guests that we got to know and everyone was having a similar great experience at the TM.
PS - The cruise ships are definitely pulling back into Mazatlan this November. I'm very glad for Mazatlan...you could tell they were excited. This will change the experience as 2000 folks descend upon the Golden Zone when a ship is in so you may want to factor that into your visit. Fortunately, this does not impact TM and I could definitely see how some folks never leave the resort. That would be easy to do if you have traveled before and want to avoid the "tourist" thing...TM has everything you need to enjoy a week in paradise right there!
