Estrella Del Mar Golf Course
More attraction details
Attraction details
Owner description: 18-hole championship golf course built in 1996, and designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The course layout is adjacent to the ocean where six of the holes and fairways are situated right off the beach. Tropical landscaping, clusters of palm trees lining the fairways, strategically placed bunkers, impeccably manicured greens and spectacular views. Estrella Del Mar hosted the 2011 Mexican PGA Championship for the first time May 5-8, just one of only two events held in Mexico on the Canadian Tour's 2011 schedule.

“Although the wind could be quite strong, the golf experience was excellent!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2012

Because we were there at the beginning of March, the weather was cool. We made the right decision to play in the afternoon. Basically, we had the course to ourselves and got through the eighteen holes easily within four hours.
The office for the golf course is in the Gold Zone. Anyone golfing needs to make a tee time and then get to the office where a complimentary shuttle bus takes the golfers to the course. The shuttle bus ride takes about forty minutes. We took the 12:30 shuttle, but there are two earlier ones.
Green fees vary based on the deal that may be offered from your hotel. For instance, we stayed at the Riu Emerald Bay where the golf fees are offered at $75.00 and includes power cart and bottled water. No caddy is required. We saw some walkers but I have no idea what they paid sans cart.
Because we played the course twice, we stored our clubs at the course, no charge.
We had a great time!
P.S. The greens are quite slow so make sure to hit your putts with a bit of umph!

“My game stinks, but I still love this course!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2012

Estrella Del Mar Golf Course is absolutely beautiful and immaculately maintained. One does not have to be much of a golfer to love this course. It is challenging for all and lots of fun. The fairways and holes oceanside are beautiful. The staff at Estrella are friendly and helpful. We enjoy the grub in the grill and you'll never find a better margarita!

“VERY Expensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2012

Beautiful Course! Drink LOTS of WATER ( they give you a cooler for your cart). It amazes me, the course is beautiful, they keep it in good shape, and no one golfs here because it is do expensive. FYI- the grass on the greens are different and very challenging.

Dear ChgoGal2,

Thank you for your review about our “beautiful course” and your advice to others to drink lots of water – very important to keep hydrated. Liquids with electrolytes work even better.

There have been a couple of reviews recently that have mentioned the cost of playing Estrella Del Mar, one which said “too expensive” (January 5, 2012) and one which said $75 USD a good value” (January 20th), so in addressing these and your own comments concerning the expense as well as the greens, this will be useful information for other golfers considering playing the course.

I’m not sure what day and what time of the day you played, but the rates vary accordingly, they can be booked through third parties or packaged with other incentives, and in addition, there are specials on certain days of the week. The rates are published on the Golf Rates page of the website and you’ll see that the regular retail rate for this time of year is $112.00. This goes down to $77.00 after May 1st. However, play after 1PM is currently charged at the twilight rate of $76.00.

As far as numbers playing the course, it averaged 76 rounds of golf a day in January, which is not bad given the current state of the economy. Depending on the day and time of play, the course can seem deserted – which is actually a bonus for many people!

Even at the $112.00 rate, which is comparable to another Mazatlan Golf Course and other top courses in the country and the US, we feel golfers are treated to an exceptional golfing experience on this Robert Trent Jones Jr designed course, which is rated one of the best in all of Mexico. Furthermore, it was chosen by the Canadian Tour to host the 2011 Mexican PGA Championship last May.

Regarding the greens, Estrella Del Mar is laid to Tifgreen – a medium green, fine textured, tough and durable hybrid Bermuda turfgrass, which is highly tolerant to heat and recovers quickly from damage. Our Director of Golf, Kim Anders, says: “Yes they are different! Bermuda grass is a necessity in warmer climates such as the desert and southern states in the US. If anyone lives further north than that they will not find any Bermuda grass. People that have grown up on Bermuda seem to love it and play it very well. But, if you are more familiar with cooler grasses like the Bentgrass varieties you will probably have problems with the Bermuda grasses. It tends have a lot more grain which doesn’t necessarily point in the same direction in which it is mown – even though we mow our greens the same as all courses in the US. As such, putts can sometimes behave erratically and break in most unexpected ways. One comment heard from a Bentgrass player, “I think it’s going to break about a foot and a half, I’m just not sure which direction!”

“Lovely for the average golfer”

The folks here on this perfectly maintained course were friendly and helpful. It might not challenge the serious golfer enough, but for us Minnesotans, was perfect
