We walked (4km one way) from the central market to the light house via Olas Altas and Cerro del Vigia. It was a nice walk with lots to see along the way. The path up to the light house is dusty and then steps but I did it in flip-flops and had no problem. (The water treatment plant was not at all smelly!) The views from the top are spectacular. It would be grand to be up there at night but the walk would be treacherous!

This is a nice hike for those folks in reasonable shape. (At the top, there is a time challenge board, to rate just how good a shape you're in!) There is a rough gravel path that takes you about half way up the hill, and the rest of the climb is all stairs, so consider this before taking along small children/strollers/elderly folks.
The light house has bottled beverages and some snacks for sale, but if it's a warm day, I would suggest taking along your own water bottle to sip on... you may want to stop and rest, and enjoy the views on your way up.
At the summit, you can rest in some shade, or have a picnic, before wandering around for panoramic views of the city, harbour, ocean and bays.
Be sure to bring along your camera!

We walked from the Centro area, at our hotel, through the city and to Playa Olas Altas and then followed the Malecon around toward the south of that beach and on around to the next. You will eventually follow the seacliff to the marina area where there are taxis to get to Stone Island. Follow the causeway/road til you get to the sewer treatment plant (sorry, but that's where it is) and just past it turn right into the gate. There is a sign but its tilted and hard to find saying this is the entrance to El Faro. Follow the trail up and over the rough washed out dirt road until you get to the staircase. There are iguanas in the foliage and loads of cactus and plants. The view is incredible, and so worth it. Be sure to take water along, especially on warm days as it is a long hike. The lighthouse keeper sells water but I am not sure of the hours.

the view is wonderful but it is a serious hike up the hill if not in shape...takes 35 to 40 minutes and take lots of water...no bathroom at the top
