Playa Olas Altas is a relatively short beach backed by a seawall and the Estatua Venado - the deer statue. Along the road are several hotels, casual restaurants and bars. We enjoyed shrimp lunch at Puerto Viejo at the south end of Playa Olas Altas. Olas Altas means High Waves. We imagine that the waves do indeed crash into the sea wall during storms!

It's an interesting place to stroll around--old buildings, an art center, a little square, various shops, ice cream sellers, restaurants. And the poor dogs, of course. They are everywhere.

Loved to watch the surfers do their thing. The waves pounded and they rode them on boogie boards and surf boards. So great!

This beach is close to the Histoirc Zone. It can be rough if the wind is up, but the Malecon which runs along side makes for really good exercise either roller blading (which you can rent), cycling (which you can rent) or just walking. Nice to just sit on the wall with a coffee (from Loonie bean) and watch the waves.

sights, sounds, food and really good coffee. the only place to be on the Saturday night of Carnival...extremely busy, lots of families and great fireworks. The hats, wigs and masks are all fun...ENJOY!
