“WOW, but . . . 5 star?”
Reviewed March 21, 2010

The RIU was exactly what i needed at exactly the right time. I didn't want to do alot of research I just needed an emergency vacation that was a great deal, and all inclusive, on a beach.....so if this is your perspective, then the RIU was great.

A couple of things though: the younger fellows at the front desk can be arrogant and rude. the women were always super gracious.

the food can get boring, i never once tried any of the authentic food because i never knew if it was that days cooking or several days ago and with other reports of illness i shied away...the green salad fixings were slim so that was a bummer (for me) and i understand the need to use leftovers but some of the pizza offerings were just plain bad.....but really there was plenty of food and quite a variety, especially at dinner...i loved the sushi night.

yes, people are always cleaning which is nice because it's difficult not to track sand around.

it is definitely a family and party (frat boy/sorority girls) kind of place (at least the week i was there). i loved the kids and i found the pool (furthest from the bar) that was left "greek free". i didn't see nor was i bothered by children running amuck with no parent available which too made me super happy.

the beach IS really rough. the hottest day was around 90 degrees and there were maybe 30 people in the ocean (the hotel had at least 300 people in it during the week i was there) i was hoping for the calm floating ocean experience and there was none of that. I did venture to old mazatlan and beaches to the south of the RIU were what I wanted from a beach front. But again, that was my fault for not researching. it didn't damped my experience but because of this i won't stay at this RIU again.

i had a great time, it was worth the money and time i invested for a much needed vacation.

My Husband & I spent one glorious week Feb 8 to 15th here. Everthing was totally 5 star. Food was great, service the best. Hotel was simply BEAUTIFUL, clean & easy to get around. Lots of pools, fabulous beach. Never had to hunt for a beach chair or a table at a restaurant. No problems getting a reservation at any restaurant there. Food - endless choice & very good. Red wine was yummy, Beer the best. Drinks endless & creative. Staff most helpful & polite. Thanks to Jesus at one of the pool bars, Raphael in the lunch buffett, and Sergio in the Lobby bar. Wonderful guys. A great place for families & couples. Disco was too loud & not appropraite music for our crowd but it is a Disco!! Night life might not be exciting enough for young singles but Mazatlan is very close by. Fabulous shopping at a nearby market just down the beach at Emerald Bay & HUGE shrimp at a shrimp shack down the beach. We would go back to a Riu anywhere in the world. A great holiday if you just want to hit the pools & beach & relax in pampered luxury.

We spent the first week of March at this beautiful hotel...... weather was awesome for the whole week pretty much.
The hotel televised the Gold Medal Hockey Game for their guests which were mainly Canadians......so, that was a real treat for us!!!
We found the hotel and beach beautiful....both were super clean and the workers just never seem to stop....great service, very friendly and helpful....... very definetly just want to please the guests!!!!! Even had a couple of calls in our room from the front desk during the week to make sure that all was good..... very impressive....been to many all-inclusives over the years to many locations and would absolutley return to this hotel, if the price was right again, had a great deal this time around.
The buffet food was very good..... slightly repetitive but lots to choose from....even very fussy eaters should be able to find something.
Ate at the Steak and the Asian restaurants...... Asian was very good..... Steak... not so much......my husband had the ribs and he said it was horrible.... I had the Fish Kebob... and thought it was good.
Took the Mazatlan City Tour..... enjoyed it very much.... our tour guide Victor was very informative and a really nice guy.... took about five hours.
Took the Zip-lining tour which was a total blast!!!! Booked from Sunquest at the hotel and the tour company was very friendly and followed all the safety procedures to a T.
If you've always wanted to try this a activity, but were a little nervous about it, this is a great place to have your first experience......felt very safe with this group. Also had a tour of a local Tequila Factory and had lots of free samples afterwards too.
My daughter and I went horsback riding on the beach with Gingers's horses, which is right beside the hotel... you can walk to it.....was suited to a horse for our level of experience, which is pretty much nil..... and enjoyed that very much also.
This is a beautiful location...with a beautiful beach where you can walk for miles if you like... the water is aways a little rough.... a lot of people were swimming anyway... my husband and daughter included... just don't go out very far.
I don't know why some people have so many complaints about this place.....I'm thinking they just must be the type who can find fault with everything and are nevery pleased with anything.
We personally had a wonderful vacation at this resort!!!!

Not changing sheets when asked to. Not enough drinking water in the rooms
Spa provided poor service when it come to customer services.
Restaurants' staff not attending to all guests.
Not enough elevators, wainting long time.

Me and my family just returned from the Riu Emerald Bay a few days ago. I'm not sure why people complain because this hotel was amazing.

Check in was quick and our rooms were ready. All rooms have ocean view. We had a
beautiful jacuzzi suite with a breath taking view of the sunset every night.

Food: We ate at 2 of the al a carte restaurants. The steakhouse was great, I tried the ribs and they were very good. We also tried the asian which was buffet style which I thought was good. It had all kinds of sushi to pick from and also had lots of soups, noodles and meats. We did the buffet the rest of the week and found a variety of food, alwalys something to choose from cold cuts, cheese, salads, soups, fish, meats, pizza, fruit and desserts etc.

Beach was nice, great for those long walks. They have three pools, 1 pool bar which was alwalys busy. They had activities going on through out the day. If you wanted a drink it wasn't a far walk to get one for yourself. The odd time you'd see a waiter come around and offer you one which was nice.

The resort was really clean, the maids do a wonderful job of keeping everthing spotless. They never stop. The entertainment staff work hard day and night to keep everyone entertained. One night they had a mexican beach party right on the beach which was fun for everybody of all ages.

We would definitely go back to Mazatlan and the Riu Emerald Bay!!!

Travelled with a group of 12, ranging from 5 years old to 82. All in all it was a great trip. Hotel Service was very good, any problems were addressed asap (Bar fridge wasn't working, toilet problem--attendant came up right away) Food was good, wide selection for dinner, lunch buffet stayed the same all week, Hot dog and hamburgers BBq on beach, (we opted to put them back on grill) Asain Restaurant was the best of the three Ala Carts. All are buffet except for the steak house. Steak was just "ok", I would opt for the ribs . A few of us dessert lovers were disappointed with the "sweet" selection. Ice Cream was very good!
Not a fan of this beach, I have travelled to many. Very windy and no "sun huts" offered in the beach area. Not any shade, as the resort is new. No beach bar service.
Many vendors, there is a rope dividing them from coming on the property but they still bother you to buy.
Main bar just off the lobby, makes the best drinks! Many choices of Martinis.Bar tenders all very friendly!
Entertainment was ok, Hey it was Mexico! Definately not cruise ship material but still quite enjoyable, The dancers did well. Everyone enjoyed the beach party, entertainment set on the beach
Definately, Mexico's Great Wolf Lodge as one of the kids put it. Many Mexican's arrived for the weekend. All very friendly.
For the amount we paid, it was well worth the money, as stated above don't upgrade to ocean view as all rooms face the ocean.
Wouldn't go back, and not sure I would recommend to a friend over Punta Cana or the Mayan Riveria.

It was our 3rd time in a Riu hotels, the first two were "palace" and they were outstanding! Food, service etc.. This one is not a Palace but the service was great, beautiful hotel and the rooms were fabulous (we had the jacuzzi suite). The only disapointment are the restaurant "a la carte". Nothing the like of the palace. Same food as the buffet, the only difference is they are being served and except for the chinese one that one was a buffet too. Overall it was a good experience, the pool was heated every day and the beach was a real pleasure to walk on. Make sure to go for lunch or dinner at Aleonzo restaurant on the beach. Truly great mexican food.
