“Red Snapper---mmmmmm.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2010

If you like red snapper this is the place. Done to perfection. All the sesfood is done well but we go mainly for the snapper. Mazatlan is full of good places to eat so we go to a diferent place each night to get as many in as we can. After many years we haven't found a bad one yet.

“Not for me”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2010

My husband and I ate here based on the recommendations from some people staying at our resort who just raved and raved about it.

It was VERY loud and noisy. The service was the worst we have ever received in Mazatlan and we have been coming to Mazatlan since 1998.

I ordered garlic shrimp which was very good. My husband, who really does not like fish but will eat fish and chips, ordered fish and chips. They brought him a very flat square piece of fish that looked like a big fish stick.

I had two different coupons - one for a free beer or 15% off the total. The waiter said the 15% was the better one to use. When the bill came the beers were more than the discount so I had him re-do the bill and give us the free beers. They were $32 pesos each. The most we paid in Mazatlan during our week there.

Not a good experience and would definitely not go back.

“Definitely not what it once was!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2010

We had a memorable dinner here in 1997, one of the best meals and values in our 25 years of Mexico travels. In 2005, the experience was more expensive but nearly as good. This time, we decided to "test" La Costa as none of the locals even mentioned it when we described our prior visits (having forgotten the name), making us somewhat uncertain about its reputation. We should have gone to Pancho's as this site and most locals recommend.

This restaurant has not only dropped substantially in value -- the prices have risen astronomically since 2005 -- but the items we tried were unremarkable. The atmosphere is still lively (a table of visitors from Japan had the huge seafood platters, maybe six of them, on charcoal heaters for about $300 for eight people) with mariachis and beach activity, but it feels more touristy now than before. With so many good restaurants in all price ranges in Mazatlan, there is really no reason to recommend La Costa Marinera unless you are staying at one of the adjacent resorts, have limited mobility, and have tried all the other restaurants in the vicinity.

“It's Okay, there are better places to try”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2009

We've eaten here on all of our trips to Mazatlan. I think it's time to move on.
The restaurant is crowded, noisy, you have to yell to be heard. Right on the beach, with beautiful sunsets. It's like Pancho's less refined little brother. Loud, brassy, No ambience, more of a party scene. I guess I'm getting old. Hard to have an enjoyable meal when the tables are so so close together that you can't move and the waiters bump into your chairs everytime they pass. The mariachi band is too loud and too big for such a crowed environment. The lounge singer is ok at best. Skip this place and check out Pancho's.
Good selection of food choices however. Reasonably priced. Everything tasted okay, nothing spectacular. Kids' meals came with fries that frankly I thought were inedible - but the kids will eat anything. Time to move on.

“Just plain bad food.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2009

Restaurants in Mazatlan are shamelessly plugged by vendors & bus drivers (restaurants pay them referral bonuses) - and we were unfortunately sold on this one on our first night. We shared a colossal seafood platter and it was pretty sub par, and pretty expensive. In fact of the 7 nights we dined out it was the worst food and actually cost us the most money.

Go elsewhere, Mr. Lionso's, Casa Loma's (if you have to eat at the mega-restaurants; the Bennigans' of Mexico). My advice is to look for smaller mom & pop joints around town & you'll be pleasantly surprised.
