“Great Secluded B&B”
Reviewed May 5, 2011

We spent 3 days at Villas Sol y Mar and really enjoyed our stay. The physical house is very nice and it's perched on a beautiful cliff overlooking the sea. The pool is large, beautiful, and very refreshing in the hot sun. The pool deck is expansive and has plenty of lounge chairs and comfy seats, with some shaded areas to avoid the sun during the day. Our room was large, comfortable, and had a great view of the ocean. The bathroom was clean and very spacious. The room had AC, which we used twice when it was really warm at night (it happened to be very hot when we were there).

The location is approximately 15 minutes from town so you are a bit of a trip from food, etc. There is a very nice kitchen available for use if you desire. They have water which is treated for drinking (although Huatulco water is safe to drink) and there are coolers, beach chairs, and beach towels available for taking on excursions. The neighborhood is quiet and beautiful - lots of expensive villas and condos. There is a beautiful beach that is a 5-10 minute walk away. They are currently building condos behind the beach, so there was a little bit of construction noise but the beach was still beautiful, almost entirely empty, and has protected from the surf.

We had a car and enjoy exploring so the slightly off-the-beaten path was great for us. If you want to be in town or don't want to have to leave for food, etc, then it might not be the perfect match for you. Supposedly, cabs to town are about 40 pesos, which seems very reasonable if you don't have a vehicle.

Wayne and Marcy were great hosts. They oriented us to the area, answered questions, and shared their insights. They seem to run a really nice operation. Breakfast was basic but tasty (great fresh fruit, granola, waffles, cereal, coffee, juice). There was wifi available in much of our room and all over the common areas. We spent one day just hanging arund the pool and relaxing because it was so beautiful and comfortable. You could really spend a lot of time just hanging around and reading/relaxing/swimming if you aren't motivated to explore. Great sunset from the pool deck.

The only thing I might add is that I am not sure how ideal it would be for small children - not that there is anything child-unfriendly. I can just imagine that some kids might want more activities available, but that's just our impression.

Sol y Mar is a very nice Bed & Breakfast hidden from the major hotel chains in Huatulco. I would warmly recommend it to anyone, who doesn't need the anonymity of the big hotels - but who doesn't mind the personal touch that comes along with that.

Wayne and Marcy are the friendlyest and most caring hosts I have met. The Villa has access to a small secluded beach (5 mins walking) and you can get to many other beaches with a short and cheap taxi ride (I liked Playa Conejos - 5 mins by taxi / 40 Pesos). The only downer is, that there are no cafes or restaurants nearby, so you'll have to head into town for that.

This was our first time staying at a private villa and would highly recommend Villa Sol y Mar. Villa Sol y Mar is located in a private residential neighborhood, a short taxi ride to restaurants, shopping and beaches. Villa Sol y Mar overlooks Tangolunda Bay and every night we would watch a beautiful sunset. The outdoor living area is large and comfortable, as are the suites, each with their own patio or balcony with ocean views. A delicious breakfast served each morning was just what we needed to get ready for a busy day. After spending the day at a beach or shopping we would return to enjoy the sunset from the beautiful swimming pool. No fighting for a lounge chair around this pool! Our hosts, Marcy and Wayne made us feel right at home and were very informative regarding restaurants and tours. Our stay at Villa Sol y Mar was more than I could have anticipated and we look forward to staying there again. Thank you Marcy and Wayne for making our stay so enjoyable.

jill & i stayed @ villa sol y mar for 8 nites & 9 days. we were given a wonderful welcome upon arriving & throughout the duration. the accomadations throughout the whole villa were superb as was the host & hostess. the mexican couple who prepare the breakfast & maintain the yard & pool are also a very accomadationg couple. we found the area to be very quiet, friendly, & with a number of things to do... ranging from relaxing @ the villa to renting a car & driving to mazunte & zipolete beach areas. our suite was very clean, comfortable, & the breeze off the ocean kept it very nice for sleeping or taking a siesta.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Sol y Mar. The Villa is situated in a gated residential community about a 10 minute cab ride from the charming town of La Crucecita and about 20 min from the Huatulco airport. Host Marcy (Wayne was missed as he was away during our stay) was wonderful in every way - charming, helpful and welcoming. You feel like your staying with family and if you like a more communal holiday than this is a great place to go. The rooms are simple but spacious with all the basic amenities including a fridge for keeping a cold cerveza or two, although the Villa is always well stocked with an assortment of chilled beverages which can be purchased on the honor system. Each room has a spectacular view accompanied by some of the best breezes to keep you cool (compared to being in town which felt 20 degrees hotter). Peace and quiet rule the day (and night). A caveat worth mentioning is that when we stayed we were only one of two couples so the Villa could be potentially noisier but with only 5 rooms that's highly unlikely. Especially since they do not allow children under the age of 17 unless booking the whole Villa, which was a bonus for us. Breakfast was wonderful, with a choice of fruits, cereal and Belgian waffles! which lovely Sucorro (Villa staff) makes fresh on request. My favourite combination was a waffle topped with plain yoghurt, fresh mango or banana and maple syrup. Heaven!!

Getting around is quite easy. Although taxis from the Villa are easy to get, it can get tiresome after a while having to take a taxi several times a day to get anywhere.

Worth noting (as this was not clear in our guide book) is that the area is made up of an abundance of little bays each with their own character and it's worth doing some exploring and research to figure out which suits best. From the busy, restaurant palapa strewn beaches eg. Playa Santa Cruz (which come in handy if you want to combine hanging out on the beach and eating) or something a little quieter like the beach not far from Villa Sol y Mar called Playa Conejos. The beach was almost deserted with the notable exception of the local fisherman's cooperative which had a crude hut and palapa on the beach which offered up the catch of the day grilled out back on an open fire which we washed down with some cold Corona - absolute perfection. It's worth mentioning that unlike what was reported in our guide book soliciting is common and relentless. Expect to be solicited 5-6 times whether you are on the beach or in a restaurant in town - there seems to be no boundaries to this practice.

For some of the best snorkeling try Playa Maguey. If you can rent a car and drive around to some of the other beaches like Playa Zipolete or you can hire a taxi for the day. Personally I got a thrill out of driving stick through the gorgeous mountains - too much fun!.

Lastly, it's worth noting that unfortunately there is a large condo development being built on the only public access beach near the Villa - needless to say this was a disappointment. To be fair, it's still accessible (up some steep steps and down again) but not only are you surrounded by the sounds and smells of a construction site, you are also very much on display for the workers. Ladies you get my drift, so not very relaxing. This means any beach access has to be achieved again with a taxi.

Overall, a lovely part of the world and we will definitely come back to explore again further. I would also heartily recommend staying at Villa Sol y Mar.

My husband and I spent a week at Villa Sol Y Mar several weeks ago in early March, on the recommendation of some friends who came back raving. My husband is deeply wary of the B&B experience (breakfast with people! eek!), and I am not the world's biggest fan of beaches inching down towards the equator. But our hosts Wayne and Marcy could not have been more helpful, gracious and non-intrusive. They even gave us a discount because their granddaughter and family were coming the same week - but really, they could have charged more! (Nice baby...).
We have been to Oaxaca and other parts of Mexico before and loved it. But this time we had just one week to shed our Canadian winter gloom and stress. It worked! The villa is really their winter home, with five well-built, private guest rooms, each with a balcony, overlooking an infinity pool and the 'true infinity pool' (the ocean down below. Situated on a hilly cliff, the location catches the sea breezes, although it does have AC too. The only possible downside for some might be the off-beach location, although there is a beautiful snorkelling beach reached by an up-and-down path nearby (though condos were under construction there during our visit). And your choice of many wonderful, uncrowded beaches is a $4 cab ride away.
Villa Sol Y Mar is in a sort of gated community, quiet and secure, although the area is so peaceful the gate seems superfluous. The B&B serves breakfast, with fresh fruit , waffles and cereal, and we ate in a variety of good restaurants in the area. Huatulco is environmentally progressive, clean and extremely tourist-friendly. All the rooms at Villa Sol Y Mar have fine westward ocean views. The place is both well designed and immaculately organized. Wayne and Marcy help you get the lay of the land quickly. They're great hosts. As a non-beach fanatic I appreciated having an oasis to retreat to that was more than a hotel room.
Can't recommend it highly enough! (I took one star off the location rating just to appear credible, and that's a demerit only if you need to be within a yard of the ocean.)

This was our 2nd stay at Villa Sol y Mar. The setting is beautiful, the accommodations are clean, comfortable and cared for very well. Wayne, Marcy, their dog Ace, their friend Tim, and staff Socorro and Quirino are great hosts. Thanks to them and their insights, we were able to see and do things that would be missed by casual tourists, especially those staying at the large resorts or all-inclusives. We really enjoyed the company of the other guests at breakfast and around the pool. The Villa Sol y Mar is located a few miles from the main city centers of La Crucecita and Santa Cruz, but taxis are readily available and inexpensive. Being away from "town" though means you can't beat the peace, quiet and tranquility, beautiful sunsets, and excellent star gazing. The rooms are reasonably priced. Breakfast is included (juice, fruit, waffles, yogurt and granola.) Small in-room refrigerators and coolers are available, as well as a common refrigerator and use of the kitchen, for snacks and light meals. This may not be the place for you if you are looking for a young, party scene, but it definitely would be my first choice for my next visit to Huatulco.
