We arrived at the castillo 1 week prior to christmas. We were very pleased with the hotel and the rooms. Our agent had us book 2 rooms as we are a family of five, but i emailed ahead and they offered to change it to their junior suite. It was a very comfortable room! And meticulously clean. The meals at the restaurant are very good, a good selection is always available. They do have some sketchy local dishes...so read the english titles but there are always others to choose from. They are a small hotel and we felt they went the extra mile to accommodate there clientele. The beach club is 1 mile down the road they have a shuttle bus to take you...our family with three teenagers walked it every other day..it was an easy stroll. This beach area is much larger and nicer then the large hotel chains have. this hotel is in santa cruz (Marina) it is a MUCH quieter location then TangolUnda where the major hotel chains are located...we much preferred the solitude. If you desire to go there though its about 3 miles 30 peso by taxi....the bay is pretty and we did taxi ther to have a look around.
We got a great deal of around 700 per person taxes included all inclusive x 1wk....we were extremely happy with this vacation and would definitely go back.

We have only been here a day yet we are already totally impressed with the service, food and weather. I can't believe that this is a 3 star place. The food is fantastic, the rooms are OK, the service is great, the internet is free (when I asked at the front desk they just handed over the password with out asking for a room number). The workers appear to genuinely want to make your stay enjoyable with out looking for a tip. Why would anyone pay more for a 4 or 5 star?

If you do not enjoy Mexican food and the Mexican people - read no further - the Castillo is not for you! Their guests are 90% Mexican of all ages - Canadians make up most of the remainder. We were quickly filled in on the quirks of the hotel by our fellow Canadians, and formed a closer bond with them than we have at any other larger resort we have stayed at. We were rather seasoned travellers who have seen it all and done it all. All of us chose the Castillo for its off-beach location near the Bahia Santa Cruz Marina. Only two cruise ships a week arrive at Santa Cruz. Those are good days to head for the Beach Club or one of the more isolated beaches. The prices go up and the place is swarming with elderly Americans. The rest of the time it is a peaceful Mexican town with many restaurants, markets and spacious walkways through open spaces and uncompleted buildings. We never felt insecure at any place or at any time of the day. The hotel is on the main road connecting all the nine bays that make up Huatulco. Several public beaches are just a short walk on either side of the marina. The far side has many restaurants abutting the beach. The Castillo has a private Beach Club a few kilometres from the Hotel on Bahia Chahue. An open air shuttle bus runs on Mexican time every half hour to the Beach Club and back hotel until 5:30 pm. The beach is not sheltered and a red flag was up the whole time we were there. You should be a strong swimmer to venture out past the shore line as the undertow is quite strong. Perhaps this is why there were not too many small children on the beach. Lunch is served from 1 pm to 4 pm. The bar is open all day long. Hot dogs, hamburgers and club house sandwiches are available at the Beach Club along with mainly Mexican foods. There is no luncheon buffet at the hotel itself. One can order from an a la carte menu similar to the Beach Club. Our weather was perfect, as it was on our two previous visits to Huatulco. Locals tell us it rains from mid-May to early November. The rest of the time it is basically sunshine. Mexican school children have what would be our summer vacation in November and December. This means many families with kids are staying at the hotel, although few went to the Beach Club. Breakfast could be quite crowded as the Mexicans had their breakast included and didn't want to miss it. Locals said there would be many more people visiting Huatulco from December on. Our band of Canadians did not join the local Signature Tour offerings. Taxis are very reasonable. The fare to the most distant bay was 50 pesos. From the Castillo to the larger town of La Crucecita was only 20 pesos. Some knowledge of Spanish is essential for a stay at the Castillo. One of our Canadian ladies bargained to charter a boat for seven of us to snorkel and visit all the bays south of Santa Cruz. Cost for each of us was less than half that of the Signature Tour and we had at least twice the fun! While the Castillo has no formal evening entertainment, the bar looks out on the main road and the adjacent lobby. We were never bored! On Mexican Independence Day all the cowboys from the surrounding area came down for a parade. Then we had an hour's worth of Motor Cycles go by on their way to a rendezvous. Another evening we were invited to an International Mexican Brass Concert on the Hotel grounds as part of a Huatulco Music Festival. Then we had about a hundred teen agers arrive from Mexico City on a Hotel Management Familiarization tour. The hotel didn't realize that they were really there to party, and did not clamp down on them until too late. Result was a fair amount of damage to the rooms. We suspect some parents will have real suprises nine months from now! The one elevator was pretty well overloaded when they were there. Most our our compatriots, including us, chose to stay at the 2 star Castillo rather than pay a $100 less a week at the higher rated Dreams or Las Brisas Resorts. We all knew what we were getting, and would all happily return to the Castillo again. But then you have to remember, of the 240 people on our flight from Vancouver/Calgary, only four of us went to the Castillo. You have to be ready to enjoy everything Mexican, and overlook the short falls (like a missing door on the room safe) to choose the Castillo. Lastly, WIFI is available within a short distance of the elevator shaft and in the bar. You just have to ask the desk for the code.

I really loved my stay at Hotel Castillo in Huatulco. Although I don't speak Spanish, the staff at the hotel was friendly and helpful even with the communication problems. The food was delicious and they served a great variety every day. This hotel is not located on the beach but they have a beach club close by and run a shuttle there every 30 minutes. The beach was spectacular - fine sands, turqoise water, and scenic rocky cliffs. Drinks and lunch were served daily at the club so you could remain all day. The only item I had an issue with was the extremely hard mattress, although I was usually too tired when I finally reached my room at the end of the day for it to hamper my sleep. I will definitely stay at the Hotel Castillo Huatulco the next time I visit!

This was our third trip to Mexico. Thirteen years ago we stayed right in Puerto Vallarta and two years ago at the Riviera Nayarit (The Royal Decameron), which we really enjoyed. We booked our trip last minute and this was one of the only places available for the dates we could go and after we read the reviews on TripAdvisor, we thought we would give it a try. We stayed at the Hotel Castillo from February 17-24. We booked through Sell Off Vacations on Feb. 15 and flew out on Feb. 17. After a 3-hour flight delay we reached our destination. Transport from the Huatulco airport and check into the Hotel went very smooth. Like other reports regarding this hotel, the rooms are basic but clean and the air-conditioning worked great. The pool area is relaxing and never over crowded. The weather was great, hot (30+) (after having a cold winter the heat was welcome). If you want something other than Mexican food order the club sandwich with fries (very good). Santa Cruz is a wonderful little Mexican village. We ate at a great restaurant on the beach beside the church called Ve el Mar. We had a delicious shrimp dinner (if you want your shrimp cleaned and peeled asked for pelado, which means peeled). We didn’t go on any tours, as we just wanted to enjoy the sun and relax. We enjoyed taking walks down to the Marina area. We went to a wonderful little restaurant on the other side of the Pemex gas station, where you can sit on white leather like sofas enjoy a drink and the ocean. There is also a nice little coffee shop behind the Scotia bank (I think it is called Max del Mar), where you can get a great cappuccino and if you have any questions the owners speak very good English. Another great thing was that we weren’t bothered by time-share sharks. The people in the markets didn’t hassle you and were helpful and friendly (we didn’t bother bartering at the Market, as their prices were very reasonable). The only people that got a little pushy were the Restaurant people wanting you to come into their restaurant, and the Taxi drivers constantly asking if you wanted a taxi. The Beach Club (Chahue) was great. It was never crowded, there were always enough loungers and the pool was never crowded. The bartenders were great. We took the $2 taxi ride into LaCrucecita a couple of times and really enjoyed the town. We stopped at the Tipsy Blowfish for a cerveza and a delicious burger and went back on Sunday night to hear a blues band, which were great. We had heard about the good pizza at Le Crema, so had to try it out. It was very tasty and reasonably priced (about 65 pesos (6.50) for a pizza. We met a lot of great people at our hotel and have kept in contact. After asking people how they found out about Huatulco most of them said it was the only one available on short notice, which I think was our luck. One complaint is, that we never saw a Sunwing rep, however, Maggie (who was with another travel company) was very helpful with any questions we had. This is a quiet place to get some sun and relax. Since we appreciate and rely on the reviews from TripAdvisor, we thought we would share our reviews and hopefully help other travelers. We really enjoyed the Huatulco area and would love to go back and explore some more (maybe tour some of the other Bays and hotels).

The Castillo Huatulco was very clean and the staff was very helpful. The only reason this is only a 2 1/2 star resort is because it is not right on the beach and it is a very short bus ride to the beach club where there are food and drinks (included) You can also walk to a very nice beach in less than 5 minutes in Santa Cruz.. The food was very good and better than some 5 star resorts we have stayed. We ventured out twice for dinner and if you like seafood the restaurant right beside the church in Santa Cruz was very good. It is right on the beach.
We would absolutely stay there again before going to one of the bigger resorts.

Huatulco may be the best winter holiday spot ever.In over 90 trips i have never seen a place as friendly, safe and just really nice and interesting.
The hotel is is Santa Cruz where the cruise ships dock.Lots of neat stores and restuarants nearby. The coffee shop in the park under the gazebo is a real treat after dinner for coffee lovers .Anything you need is available at Autoservicia a conveniance store next to the park.Next to the church on the beach is a great place for a romantic lobster dinner.
A taxi into LaCrucecita (downtown) is only 20 pesos(2 bucks). The best area is across from the main park for shopping, bars restuarantsetc.Try Cafe Mayor for snacks, drinks and good guitar music nightly.
The hotel itself is lowrise and Mexican colonial style. The pool is good and not always in the sun with umbrellas for shade also.
Bar service at the pool is hit and miss and you may have to hunt down the bartender sometimes but it is no big deal.
Food is plentiful, breakfast is the best meal of the day, lunch is best at the beach club.Dinner can be a bit of a challenge if you do not like spicy Mexican style food but, you will not starve either.
I do not think i have ever been to a cleaner hotel, they wash the pool umbrellas daily.Rooms basic but spotless with phone and tv but, mostly spanish channels with some English subtitles.Evenings at the hotel are very quiet with a guitarist on Friday and Saturday.
Dinner is not served untill after 7.00 but continues till 11.00.
I have saved the best for last. The beach club is fantastic, with a pool ,restuarant, washrooms ,volley ball courts, hammocks and lots of palapas on the beach, never crowded, good bar and food service.
The shuttle leaves the hotel every 30 minutes(Mexican time) and is about a 5 minute trip, say hi to Ricardo the driver a great guy.
The clientele of this hotel is mostly Mexican families ,try out your Spanish and make new friends ,we did.
All in all a great holiday in a lovely part of Mexico. In my opinion better than Cancun,Acapulco,PV,and similar to Playa Del Carmen without the crowds.
We are a young mid sixties couple who are well travelled and somewhat picky but no compalints on this trip.
