This is a 3.5 star hotel, it's not a Dreams or Secrets. So if you're looking for all that comes with a 5 star this isn't the place for you. Both the rooms and the food were basic. They don't serve an endless buffet with shrimp on a bed of ice. Instead you get simple and very clean rooms, and OK food. The staff were great.

The location is great to the small quaint town of La Crucecita, 20 minute walk.

The beach club offered a buffet but if you stayed at the hotel pool you could order off the menu.

Room Tip: If you like to have a post day siesta then I would suggest you get a room that faces the pool.

This is the second time my travelling friends and I have stayed at the Castillo. The staff is so lovely, helpful, friendly, and accommodating. The hotel is a small establishment with a beach club approx. a 15 min. walk away or a very short hotel bus ride away. In short, all great, not your usually type of all inclusive resort, very laid back...will definitely return!

Room Tip: rooms with king size beds are on street side, so bit noisier

Grabbed a last minute deal to this little hotel right in the heart of things. Directly across from the Sta Cruz beach and market, it's a short walk to town or the beach. They have their own beach club for drinks, lunch and just laying around under a palapa. There's a shuttle going from the hotel to the beach every 20 minutes or you can walk, either way it takes only moments. As you'll read from other reviews grab a room street-side 2nd floor as they have balconies. Lobby bar opens at 11am and closes at 11pm. That said, you might want to grab a bottle for the rooms as there's now extending the hours. The hotel is small and very clean. The buffet is also small and as a vegetarian i didn't find much to eat, though all the carnivores around me enjoyed their food thoroughly. If you're looking for a fantastic hotel experience, this isn't it. But if you want something affordable and close to things to do, it's a great value. I will return.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 2nd floor with a balcony.

Quite hotel small wasn't very busy.Staff was friendly , a little slow at breakfast.Rooms very clean could use a little more storage space for your cloths. We had the second floor facing the street which had a large balcony .Only draw back was they were still working on the hotel across the street. Not a very busy street but some traffic.I must add it's the cleanest Mexician. City we've been too. The short ride to the beach was ok . Beach club was nice had a pool and food drink restrooms and shade on the beach which is needed . It gets very hot early in the morning so make sure u get some shade cover either by the pool or on the beach. Food at the beach club was good so where the drinks and service! My only problem in when your flight leaves at six o'clock or later checkout is at one . The hotel wanted to cut your all inclusive wrist bans off. Leaving you with no room ,food, drinks and even bottled water ! First time in Mexico travelling that has happened to us most hotels let you eat and drink till you flight departs.Which our flight was delayed 6 hrs making our departure at midnight! Yes it was a Sunwing flight ! I did manage to get another room at no cost. Due to medical issues! But you to speak up for results! Communication between Sunwing and the hotel was st least slow if not poorly handled .Hoping that Sunwing picks it up and doesn't leave any other quest hanging. Remember we book trips to relax and enjoy our time away and shouldn't have to stress about things like that. All in all we did enjoy the city and people and beaches!!

We were also part of the group that were delayed for hours without food or drink. As a seasoned traveller I am well aware that delays happen but have never been denied water when sitting for hours awaiting a flight. Our flight was also delayed several hours when we arrived so I feel the hotel should of taken that into consideration. As the previous poster mentioned nobody seemed to be in charge- no hotel management, no Sunwing. In fact I felt that the Sunwing reps went out of their way to avoid us as they didn't want to deal with the situation! Due to the poor communication or total lack of we didn't feel we could leave the hotel to eat as we didn't want to miss the shuttle to the airport. Upon speaking to fellow passengers from other resorts they all received full privileges until departure from hotel.
That being said I felt we were treated royally prior to the last day. The staff went out of their way to see our needs were met and that we were enjoying ourselves. We had a street view room on the second floor with a large patio and enjoyed sitting out and watching local life. Our room although simple was very clean. The food selection was limited but very good. We were aware that this was a 2.5 star Mexican hotel when we booked and were not disappointed. The elevator was out of service the whole week but that was not an issue for us. It is a shame the last day tarnished this review because with very little effort on the part of Hotel Castillo and Sunwing this could of been avoided!

We did our homework before we booked and feel this was important in giving us a clear idea of what to expect. In so doing, we were really pleased with everything and feel we got a tremendous value and that the hotel had all we needed and more. I think it's important to point out, that this is not a 5 star, over the top, party type hotel. What you can count on is a very clean room, a friendly staff that will do their best to tend to any request, delicious Mexican inspired food with decent (not huge) variety, and an excellent beach club with good service and plenty to do.

We are a younger couple (early 30's) and absolutely loved our vacation. If you expect to do what most do at an all inclusive (eat and drink like crazy and lay on the beach all day and then go for entertainment at night), you won't really get that experience here. It's pretty quiet with limited entertainment at the hotel. Instead, we planned to get up relatively early every day, explore, do something active in the morning and then spent the afternoon at the pool or beach club. We went Deep Sea Fishing one day, Snorkeling another, riding ATV's another, Massages and Mud Baths another, shopping etc. We went out for a couple of excellent dinners and lunches on the beach at nearby Bays and went into town for a nice walk every night. We were pretty tired and were in bed by 11pm pretty much every night. It was relaxing, fun and we felt like we got the most out of our time there.

Huatulco is a very authentic and charming little town. La Crucecita has all kinds of great inexpensive restaurants and handmade gifts and the people are wonderful. Almost everything is made by hand and you can tell is labor intensive work for almost too low prices. The only bad part about the town was that we found the jewelry store people to be quite unrelenting to get you to buy things. Short of blocking you at the door, they just kept showing you more stuff and changing conversations after you said no 5 times. Other vendors were all quite polite and while they wanted you to buy, were not pushy at all.

The staff at the hotel was great. I wanted to thank Chef Philippe for cooking the Mahi Mahi we caught when fishing. Literally the best meal I've had in years. Also, the wait staff, bar staff, and cleaning staff were all wonderful. Juan and Johnny in particular took really great care of us.

I think The Castillo is a great hotel provided you have realistic expectations but I think the main point is that to really enjoy your vacation you have to get out, explore, and embrace the local culture rather than just spend every waking minute at the hotel and beach club.

I have just finished reading some resent reviews of the Castillo. I myself just returned on December 10 after a one week stay. This was my second trip to Huatulco and I couldn't have enjoyed it more. I knew I was booking a 3 star hotel so I didn't expect anything elaborate and was pleasantly surprised. Our rooms, although small were spotlessly cleaned-everyday. The satff couldn't have been more accommodating and friendly. Although they don't speak English as well as other Mexican tourist areas, they try very hard. It's one of the things taht make Huatuloc quaint and refreshing.
The beginning of December is an off-season tourist time so hotels are usually less busy and may have more locals staying due to Mexican holidays. Although the food had a local flare is was always very good and there was plenty of it. There was not an "omelete station" each morning however, you could order one made fresh and it would be delivered to your table. The buffet lunch from 1-4pm at the Beach Club was excellent with fresh fish, guacamole and salsa.
As for the shuttle to the beach..it was fun to go back and forth in an open air bus. The driver's were all friendly and very cautious.
In the evenings it is very safe to walk around the marina and the market without any harrassment from vendors. We mingled in the park during festivities with locals and their families and felt very safe and welcome.
We did for a moment experience a snag when trying to get water a few minutes after check-out but it was quickly straightened out by a concerned manager. Our flight with Sunwing to Toronto was not delayed and we left the hotel on time. Since I stayed here all week with the same people who are writing the negative reviews I am quite shocked. We all seemed to have am amazing time together and I never heard any comments that sounded like the ones written. I truly believe the unfortunate check out circumstances caused everyone to feel this way.

Room Tip: Terraces on street are lovely except for the construction across the street. Even so, they only work...
