“Welcome home!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

"Welcome home" is what our Sunwing rep greeted us with at the Huatulco airport. Wow did we feel at home at the Castillo. All of the staff were very friendly and did everything to make us feel at home. If you like small hotels with a local flavour then this is the place for you.

I felt very safe as a single female traveler and it was very easy to meet new friends at the hotel.

Room Tip: I liked my garden facing room away from the dining room, it was very quiet. The beds are ok but the...

We just returned from a Sunwing week in Huatulco, staying at the Castillo. Sunwing did a great job, thumbs up. When we first arrived we had to orientate a bit (Sunwing Huatulco staff were super, thanks James and Conan, small hotel/guest number may have helped) and found that sitting outside by the pool worked for us for most meals. Once we got to the beach club, our first Wow! Hotel is in a great location, friendly staff, good food (if you like seafood and Mexican you will do fine but fruits/salads all fresh too). A suggestion - add some more salad dressings). Entertainment small scale, but a bonus and very good on the evenings it happened. The fiesta night (when locals filled up the hotel) was a dining and cultural treat (try the grasshoppers) and the beach club bbq our last night just the best as the full moon came up. A big Wow, thank you Castillo. You can relax here and be a part of the local vibe, very different AI for us. We went to several bays/beaches, easy and cheap cab, so helpful drivers. No excursions for us but easy to arrange or DIY. Wished I had gone on a boat tour/fishing with Ernesto we met working by at the beach club. A younger, local man with excellent English skills, he shared information on baby turtle releases and I tagged along a bit fishing from shore (he caught five small tuna casting!). Later he us an impressive iguana they rescued offshore. Wish we were still there, it was minus 15 when we got home! Tips: Try Cafe Huatulco for coffee, buy some for home and go Meditteraneo one night, both at La Cruz (music if it happens is after 8), try a snorkle at muy bonita Entrega, go early. Bogarts was a great base restaurant there and good eats.

Room Tip: We could have got a King but double worked fine with a view of the pool and the crickets at night. N...

Just had a week Nov .12-19, Hotel is small with a lovely Mexican flavor. Clean rooms, great beach club, friendly staff. Not the place to go if you are looking for room service, 5* dining etc, but for a taste of Mexico, the best!

Room Tip: The street side is fun, large balconies, great to watch the local scene, but noisy if you are a ligh...

We spent a week here from Oct 29th to Nov 5th. And will be returning in January. The star rating for this hotel is purely because it is not beach front. If that is an important factor for you, then this hotel is not for. However, the beach club is only a 3 to 5 min shuttle ride away, or a 10 to 15 min walk, and it is beautiful, a little garden of Eden :) As so many other reviewers have said, the staff at this hotel cannot do enough for you, from the margarita's at check in to fixing Dell's broken sandal...thanks Ricardo :)
We were intially in a pool side room, but were moved to a street side with the bigger balcony within 30 mins of check in. The rooms are a good size, very clean, bed linens and towels are good quality, comfy bed, a fridge would be a nice addition, but not a deal breaker. Food is good quality, not a huge selection, but always found something we liked. Lunch at the Beach Club is either buffet, or they do have a small menu, with some very tasty dishes on it.....great club sandwiches..salsa, chips and chipotle mayo were excellent, and plentiful...Thanks Umberto.
We have already recommended this hotel to friends, and they are there now. My husband and I have decided from now on no more big impersonal resorts for us, these smaller more intimate hotels are definitely our preference...Really looking forward to returning here in the New Year. This was our 4th trip to Huatulco, we're delighted we've found this little treasure.

Room Tip: we preferred street side with the larger balcony, street noise is not an issue after 6 pm.

Just returned from one week at Castillo and absolutely loved it. The rooms, the location and the staff made this a truly wonderful vacation. The all inclusive buffets were not huge like some of the larger hotels but everything was great and we had a b.b.q. in the garden one night and a Mexican evening with show in the salon another night. Staff bends over backwards to give you whatever you want. When I arrived there were fresh flowers, a bowl of fresh fruit and chocolates in the room which was a nice touch. The hotel is located right downtown Santa Cruz and very close to the marina and cruise ship port. Bank, stores and flea market right across the street. Two minute walk to a small and very nice beach or take the shuttle to the beach club which has a large pool and lovely beach with lots of shaded areas. Lunch is usually served at the beach but you can order a la cart at hotel for no charge. I am a single woman and walked several times to the large food store and even to La Creusetta downtown to see the square and church and do a bit a shopping and never once felt in danger or was never harassed. I really, really loved this area and now am looking to rent a condo for three months in the winter. Highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: large balcony on rooms facing street and no problem with noise.

The hotel is well located, rooms are large (beds are extra large!) and the beach club is very cool and the beach was actually the most I liked off all Huatulco accessible beaches (the ones you don't need a boat to get to). Guests can get there by their own means or using the shuttle service provided by the hotel (they leave each 30 minutes). The turn downs: we paid extra for breakfast but it was not buffet, certainly not very good. Also wifi signal was very poor in the room, I had to stay close the the entrance door to get a fair connection.

have been to huatlulco many times , usually to the big resorts. This time we talked my brother in law and his wife along but they wanted a small hotel. The castillo is right down town, busy rd, and had to shuttle to beach: it was great! very clean, very, very friendly staff, above average food although smaller selection.

the beach club would custom make food or else use decent buffet., beach was great for swimming, beautiful views and perfect bar service

we had balconies on the road side so each evening watched the world go by, close to the port and watched the boats come and go.

would absolutely go back, a real taste and feel of mexico

Room Tip: take a room on the frt, huuuuge balconies
