“LOVED IT!!!!”
Reviewed March 17, 2012

Decided against the large AIs in the other area of town, we prefer smaller resorts and you get to see a lot more of what's happening locally. LOVED this place!! Check in was quick, rooms were spotless (we took the Jacuzzi Suite as an upgrade, not because we're newly weds or in need of a jacuzzi lol, but because we wanted more room). Two juliette balconies overlooking the courtyard and pool, that was quite nice to watch the families and kids swimming.

Staff were quasi-English speaking, which gave us a good workout on our Spanish, which will really help you out here. Staff were all very friendly and professional and we had some great pieced-together conversations, helping each other out with pronunciation and vocab. Asael was particularly helpful and kind and patient with our babbling!!

Food was INCREDIBLE!! I mean, if you're in Oaxaca, you're going to get some of the best food in MX. And as most of the guests were Mexican families, the food was geared toward local tastes, which was exactly what we wanted. Please understand, the buffet is small relative to other AIs, because the hotel is. But everything was impeccably fresh (and hot and cold as it is supposed to be!).

Beach club is about a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel (you can take shuttle), which we liked for exercise. Can sit by the pool or the ocean, whichever, and they get lunch going around 1:00. It too was fantastic!!! Good drink service in both spots (PLEASE, tip these people!!).

From Castillo, can easily walk around Santa Cruz and into La Crucecita, shop, look around at things, go fishing, go for a swim, go to one of the spas. The place was relaxing and quiet but evenings in the lobby bar everyone gathered around before and after supper. There was also live music most nights which was really excellent.

Overall, we had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to return here. But if you're looking for a big place, with tons of food, and lots of action, this isn't the place for you. Something more authentic and local?? This is the place!!!

Just returned from a week at the Castillo Huatulco and have to say we enjoyed this vacation a lot more than we do the large resort ones. The Castillo is on a busy street just beside the marina in Santa Cruz and this was what we liked. In spite of intense heat we were able to step out of the hotel and walk easily into La Crucecita, the beach club, or just wander through the neighborhoods. The resorts are lovely but too isolated for us. The Castillo is small hotel with a beach club a few blocks away at Bahia Chahue. It is basic but meets ones needs with comfortable, clean, air conditioned rooms, excellent food in the dining room and ample drinks in the lounge. The hotel does not offer a la carte meals, but the food is always good on the buffet. Service was always courteous and friendly. The staff speaks varying amounts of English, but we never had trouble being understood, and took the opportunity to practise and learn some Spanish. I can't think of one complaint about this nice little hotel. It's not the place to go if you want the opulent resort experience, but if you're getting tired of that and want to experience a little more of authentic Mexico then this hotel fits the bill.

My husband and I just returned from another 2 weeks at the Castillo and loved it just as much as ever. This was our 5th trip to Huatulco and 3rd time at the Castillo. We have also been to other hotels on Tangolunda Bay.

The service, the staff, the location, the fact that it was probably 80% Mexican visitors and 20% North Americans made it even more delightful for us as we always attempt to speak some Spanish, but at our age (over 70) our language-holding memory is Not Good!

We always ask for a second floor room overlooking the street, and as usual we were very happy with it. We don't often turn on the air conditioning, but this time it was much warmer in the room. It's always interesting to watch the goings-on over the balcony and even get a glimpse of the cruise ship when it's at dock.

The clean hotel pool is quiet during the day, but came alive in the evenings, mostly with Mexican families. The pool at the beach club was great for a swim after relaxing in the sun or sitting under a palapa during the day.

Don't miss having a great coffee at The Cafe Huatulco in the centre of Santa Cruz, or at the Terra Cotta cafe in La Crucetita, and watch the activity on the streets.

The 10-12 mins walk to beach club was our morning exercise, with a cheery "Hola, como estas?" from the gardener en route along the road. You can also take a bus ride, outside the hotel, into La Crucecita, for 3 pesos!! although the cabs are only 25 pesos, but we always enjoyed the bus ride and the passengers.

We met a number of Canadians who were staying at the hotel for 1, 2, or 3 months, and we're seriously thinking of doing just that next winter. The temperatures in Huatulco are perfect for an extended winter stay.

This hotel is not luxurious, in fact it could be termed a little "tired", but it is clean, has a great atmosphere, the food is good, the staff are super and we couldn't have been more happy than if we had stayed in a 5-star hotel.

Oh ... and the beds were just to our liking - not too hard, nor too soft!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the building are quieter than those at the front.

Upon arrival to the hotel, check in was very quick as there were only 4 of us checking in. We got our room which was on the second floor, facing the street with a lovely balcony. We were greeted with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a fruit basket. The room was very basic with a king size bed, closet with safe. The bathroom had a very large shower with soap and shampoo, hair dryer, clean towels daily included for the duration of our stay.
This is a very small resort, so navication is very easy. On the main level is the lobbey bar ( which serve beer in bottles, which is usually unheard of) and good quality liquor. The buffet is also on this level, as well as the front desk, washrooms, pooltable and tour reservations.
The beachclub is a nice 15 minute walk, or if you prefer, you could take the hotel shuttel, which runs every 30 Mexican minutes! The beach is very nice, however, swimming in the ocean is iffy! The undertow is very strong, but the beach is beautifull to walk. The pool is very warm and there are plenty of loungers in sun or shade, whichever you prefer, and if you need an afternoon nap, there are several hammocks in the shade.
They have a lunch buffet at the beach club which varies from day to day - hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken nuggets, fish, soup, salad ,vegies, etc. If you stay at the hotel in the afternoon, you can order off the menu, as they dont set up the buffet, so as to prepare for the evening supper buffet . Personally I found the club house sandwiches were a real treat, as well as Mexican Natchos.
As Canadians, we were treated to a (actually 2, because we stayed 2 weeks) very special barbque supper on the lawn. It was a special touch, and very lovely evening. Thanks Gabriel and the rest of the staff for making us feel special!.
The location of this hotel is the real drawing card. You are right in Santa Cruz, and a 15-20 minute walk you are in La Cruceceta (spelling?) We usually walked to town, then took a cab home which cost us 25 pesos.
The weather - well, its hot!!. As you may or may not know, the weather on the Southern Pacific Coast is so reliably hot. , which is another drawing card.
This is not a 5 star resort, but for us, it is so quaint and special. If you read more reviews, you will see that most of the guests are repeat customers - and for a good reason.!!
I will add one more thing - the majority of the clientel are Mexican. The only bad thing about this, (and is our own fault) is that commumication among the guests is hard, unless your Spanish is good.
P.S. Gabriel, please advise me where you purchased the lobbey fans from

Room Tip: Rooms on 2nd floor facing street have nice, big balcony

My wife and I have just returned from our third visit of two weeks duration, in two years, to this great little hotel on February 7th.
As on previous trips, we once again thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff continue to be some of the most friendly and attentive we have ever encountered over many years of travelling to many countries.
The food selection varies between good to excellent at both the hotel and the beach club.
The hotel is largely visited by Mexican families and so has a very authentic Mexican feel to it.
This year we were delighted with the new mattress on the king sized bed. Previously they were quite hard, but not anymore. There is entertainment in the hotel lobby most nights and this finishes around 10 p.m.
The beach club is a 10 minute walk or 3 minute, hotel supplied, coach ride away. It is just a great place to spend your days. They do lunch from 1 pm to around 4.30 pm.

We have found Santa Cruz, where the hotel is and La Cruceitta the little town close by to be very safe and have no reservations about walking anywhere at any time.

To Coco and the all the staff at the hotel and David and all the staff at the beach club, THANK YOU for another great trip.

See you all again, sooon.

Room Tip: We have found room 407 overlooking the pool to be very saisfactory. In addition we were able to acc...

We have been to the Castillo Huatulco three times and there have been guests who have far surpassed us. In fact, we also took our children and grandchildren, aged 2 and 6 there. The reasons were very straightforward: a taste of Mexico in a very safe and clean environment. No tummy issues. A beautiful beach. And a wonderful little hotel with a very friendly and caring staff.

The Castillo is frequented by Mexican guests, primarily. Something we really enjoyed. Meeting various couples and/or families from throughout Mexico whose English far surpassed our limited Spanish was truly interesting and educational. It can get very busy at the Castillo over the Christmas period when the Mexican kids are out of school but it is worthwhile requesting a room on the second floor with the terrace that faces the street if you can get it (even though the cars start rolling by at 7 am) – so much extra living space and a wonderful king size bed. The mattresses are hard – but extremely comfortable. The rooms, although basic, are kept immaculate. There is no mini fridge . . but the bar is a short hop away. And the restaurant opens at 7 am so you can get a wonderful coffee to enjoy on your patio. No bathtubs but very large showers. Hot water all the time and plenty of soap and shampoo.

We found the Qaxacan cuisine to be excellent- not your miles of buffet items such as you might find in the DR or larger Mexican resorts but very tasty. Wow – if I were to try to elaborate on the excellent dishes that were served it would be impossible since the Quaxacan cuisine is so wonderfully spiced. We didn`t eat late at night – so our food was always hot. The buffet at the beach club was also good, so we never ordered from the menu. Of course, that leads us to the beach. The beach club is really only a 15 minute stroll away – and there is a little shuttle that runs every 20 minutes or so. Chahue is beautiful – although not for the intermediate swimmer since the water level drops off quite quickly. No sand fleas or bugs. Good for long walks, and the service at the beach club is excellent. The bathrooms are clean. Lots of pallapas for shade. Mind you, the pool at the beach club is relatively small (but adequate) as is the pool at the hotel. There are hammocks for dreaming and a trampoline & playground for the kids. I should mention that the kids were so well behaved, while we were there. No issues at all.

Nightly entertainment is on the tame side if there is any at all – and the bar closes early at approx 11 pm. But, it is only a short stroll to the Marina across the road for a wonderful late night coffee, or a 5 minute cab ride into town where there is lots of nightlife.

We like the locale of the Castillo with all its options for walks or short cab rides. All the cab fares are posted on the hotel’s bulletin board so no haggling. Never a lack of things to do.

Another important feature for us: the staff. Second to none. We found their English to be good. Bring a dictionary – and practice your Spanish – it will be most appreciated. Also something that we appreciated is that the Castillo promotes its staff. So, you will run into familiar staff members who have moved up the ranks.

The Castillo is not for everyone – it is a small Colonial hotel with immaculate grounds – not sweeping – and some of the friendliest and caring staff we’ve ever encountered. If Huatulco is on your travel list and you are looking for a little place that is off the beaten tourist path then do visit the Castillo.

Room Tip: We preferred the front rooms with the terrace - extra living space and king size bed

This was our 4th stay at Castillo, 5th to Huatulco. Arrived at our room 226, facing the street, with a king size bed per request. Roses and flowers in a vase, as well as a fruit basket and a letter of welcome from Gabriela. Wow! We started our day off by going down to breakfast where the food was as always, delicious . Regional dishes were offered as well as the regular pancakes, french toast (very tasty)egg dishes, fruit , cereals. The granola I enjoyed (I called it bird seed) was full of nuts etc. Wish I could get that at home! It is so good! As well as sweet rolls and some morning freshly baked cookies, mmmm. Also offered were 4 kinds of yogurt and different juices. For the more adventuresome, flavourful meats, tortilla's from the grill gal. I tried cheese and spicy grasshoppers, squash flowers, and a black dish derived from corn. Again very good and would eat again. Now to get a little exercise to try to keep some of the weight gain down, which evidently was not enough, we walked to the Castillo Beach Club ( around a 15 minute walk). We stayed there all day eating and drinking, talking to other guests as well as walking, swimming in the ocean or the pool. Every day we were treated to more good food. Offered every day were, sea food soup, hamburgers or hotdogs. Different fish, some cooked whole (I thought was great, no small bones) but had to take your time eating, steamed, fried, deep fried. Usual rice and veg. dish. French fries. Every day there was shrimp ceviche, sometimes also pescado cheviche (fish). The fish was very fresh. Also offered were desserts. We were lucky enough to see dolphins from the beach for 2 days. We then caught the bus back to the hotel which runs every 30 minutes. We either went for a swim, or changed and walked around the square. We all seemed to gather around the open bar for a pre-dinner drink, as well as more visiting. Dinner was served at 7:30. More wonderful food. Fish dishes, chicken, and pork as well as soup and salads and desserts. If you wish or feeling adventuresome, spice up you meals with added condiments. The salsa is delious and not to warm. During our 2 weeks we were treated by the hotel to 2 tex mex BBQ's by the pool. The staff went out of their way to make the night special. Also they treated us to a special intertainment featuring dance, traditional costumes and regional food. We arrived back to our room one day to find gifts from the Castillo.
If your looking for a place to just lay back, eat great food, meet great people, rest and relax, this is the place to do it. The staff are just wonderfull. They truly make your stay!!!
Hints: Get out of your hotel, go into town in the evening. Leave your comfort zone and try different thing to eats, go to different places in Huatulco Have a shot of Tequila and Sangrita.
Have a massage or a pedicure. My only regret is that I don't speak Spanish which I hope to change. Thank you to all the wonderfull staff, and fellow guests as you make our trip. I am missing your stories which kept us all laughing. Adios
