Booked an all inclusive vacation through Sunwing. Once we arrived from the airport, which was an easy set up to get through customs and on to your designated bus, it was time for a refreshing towel and drinks. And boy did the drinks flow. Top notch spirits. And fuss over asking for anything. Really can't express how pleased we both were with this vacation. I'd say because of the price range it definitely caters towards an older crowd, but still some younger folk. This is definitely a repeat for the two of us in the future. Only slight drawback was that we had requested a single large bed in the room for the two of us, but instead received two smaller beds. Wasn't the end of the world, we even managed to take advantage of the situation and have our afternoon power naps in one and evening sleep in the other.
Look forward to returning here.

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean. from what we could tell is that there wasn't a bad room to have.

Just returned from a last minute week long trip to Secrets Huatualco as arranged by Sunwing Vacations from Calgary to destination. Flight was nightmarish--packed in tight and a baby screaming for 3 of the 5 hours and he was there for the flight back too. The "Champagne " flight as billed, consists of a couple of tablespoons of champagne delivered in something that looks like a little cup for taking medicine, delivered by pleasant but harried flight attendants--it is ridiculous--keep the champagne please. The Sunwing reps at the hotel were quite helpful when we asked them questions and they were generally available.

This adults only hotel has clean modern lines, breathtaking views from every room and every at every turn a nice mix of people being served by friendly and professional staff.

The arrival and check in process is almost painless. You arrive in your room within minutes to begin your vacation. The room like everything else on the resort is pristine, clean, tasteful and plays to those dramatic views of the bay. Yes the door to toilet is frosted glass but around the corner and out of sight -we just gave the other person a bit of space when they were using the facilities--did not affect us in the least. I stayed at the Grand Sirenis in the Mayan with a huge cutout in the wall giving a full view of tub and toilet area. Seems to be a common thing in Mexico.

The service is always there when you need it and never cloying or annoying. The staff is ready to be as familiar and involved as you wish them to be. Our requests were always handled promptly with the phrase "it is my pleasure". Staff supervisors monitoring progress and standards were often in evidence.

The pool is the centerpiece of this hotel. It is beautiful and huge with busy, active sections and more laid back sections where you can still hear a bit of music and laughter from the entertainment committee antics but not be bothered. The drink service was very good for the most part, it flagged a bit over the Easter weekend as the hotel seemed to get very busy with locals. Anybody who says this pool isn't clean is crazy. There were always at least 3 boys with scrub brushes and goggles scrubbing the bottom and sides of this pool, like everything else in the hotel.

The beach is very pleasant but the sand is a course, coral and not to the taste of everyone. Even though the hotel is on a bay, it is not entirely protected and the waves are big and dramatic quite a bit of the time--we did not swim there much ourselves and saw few people indulging, although there was a definite crowd who favoured sunning on the beach. There are two small public beach areas to either side of the main hotel beach, but the hotel beach is quiet. There are vendors who will approach you throughout the day but they are not pushy. If you want a soft fine beach with lots of protection from the waves then Las Brisas down the road is better but is not as high quality resort as this, though acceptable, and of course children are allowed.

The spa service was spectacular. Specials are featured daily, and there are coupons available. My deep tissue massage and hydrotherapy provided by Ruby with spectacular views was a total sensory experience and well worth it.

The food was very good. We enjoyed not having to spend half a day trying to book a la cartes in advance--we walked into any restaurant without a reservation and never waited and always had an enjoyable meal, though perhaps ironically, we were a bit disappointed in the Mexican restaurant. The buffets provided good variety for a week of breakfasts and lunches. We ate in town two nights. The cab ride was 6 U.S. dollars; we highly recommend Onix in town--Italian on the main square on the 2nd level, but we could have eaten in the hotel every night. We used room service one afternoon and it was fast and hot and nicely prepared.

What we were disappointed in was the terrible Wifi and other communication around this hotel. We both had packages from Rogers and have stayed at nearby hotels before and been able to text each other and friends without a problem--here the packages were an almost complete waste. We had trouble making phone calls home, texts were impossible unless you were standing with outstretched arm on the balcony of the room and searching the internet was impossible. There is better Wifi in the lobby area but not reliable--I could not complete several downloads I attempted. There is a business centre; the computers have Spanish keyboards and some don't always work--you can plug your own laptop in instead of theirs and proceed, but it is slow and inconvenient. We had some business issues to take care of and it did become a concern for us. The hotel does not have it's own antenna and it is out of line of sight for local towers. Many people noted the service in this important area did not meet the otherwise high standards of the hotel.

The gym, located in the same building as the spa is too small for the size of the hotel. It was often very crowded and almost unusable at certain popular times, though the limited choice of equipment was all in good condition.

The :"Vacation Club"--they do keep at you to attend their seminar on their vacation club and when they threw in private transfer to the airport and late checkout and some spending money for the gift shop we agreed to a breakfast meeting from 8:30 to 10:00. It is not a time share and it may be for some, but not for us. As 10:00 o'clock approached I told them we'd be going soon as we'd agreed to a 90 minute seminar--they tried to tell us it didn't start until after we had breakfast--we said we were told 8:30 until 10:00--suddenly the rep we were dealing with was told he "had a phone call" and more senior reps moved in; we were forced to be very firm and insist on the terms we had been promised and that we did not want so spend $17,000.00 on anything on the spur of the moment on vacation. On the plus side it was very nice not having to check out at 11 and sit at the airport for 4 hours (we left at 2:30 and had plenty of time to go through airport), so the unpleasantness was probably worth it for us but be prepared if you go. They are pleasant on the surface but it is a well oiled sales machine.

Saving chairs etc.--The hotel literature tells you that after 30 minutes items left on "saved" beach or pool chairs will be removed. This is patently untrue. One person saved a prime location on the beach for several hours with a single shoe--not even a towel. However, you can usually find a spot, especially around the pool. April is an extremely hot month, and securing a spot with an umbrella is ESSENTIAL and they can get scarce. We found ourselves arriving after 9:00 one morning and no shade in sight; I asked an employee and he produced an umbrella and stand from somewhere for which he was tipped generously. If you are very picky about what section of the pool you are at, then you will have to take action early. We generally had no trouble securing something and we were never there before 9:30 I would say. The beach can be a bit harder I believe although our one day there, we did secure a decent place with shade. I took a regular umbrella with me and used it for extra shade when the sun moved and the heat most intense.

There were no hotel sanctioned jet skis available for rent at the resort, a fact my husband sorely missed. The non-sanctioned ones that were available were astronomically expensive.

I would not travel to this area again at this time of year--a little earlier is better. This hotel has much to offer and we probably didn't utilize all of it, certainly we didn't get to all the restaurants and bars. We probably would have booked more tours and been more active but for the heat. That said, it was luxurious and lovely with very good service and the heat is not the hotel's fault. You could be social or quiet but it is not a party hotel. We would definitely return to/recommend this resort as long as we had no pressing business matters requiring internet attention.

Room Tip: We stayed in 2214 which was on the same level as many restaurants and the lobby and bar. You can he...

Returned yesterday and must comment on the 'lack of shade' remarks. Did you ever think to ask for extra umbrellas? We did and every day we received as many as we needed. Since it was so hot, quite often we had three which covered us for the whole day.

Of the four AM Resorts properties we have stayed at, this is the best. The food was outstanding as was the service and the cleanliness of both the room and the common areas. For a resort that was almost full, the number of pools made the resort seem well spaced.

The room was very comfortable, especially the mattress and bedding. I'm not sure how long the wood slats in the shower area are going to last. Daily maid service and nightly turn down service were delivered without a hitch.

Huatulco is a smaller resort area, for the moment, which we like. We will definitely go back although when it is cooler and would book the first floor with the swim up perk for ease of access from the beach and pool area. We stayed in the preferred suite in Building 3 which meant one elevator from the room to the roof and then another from the roof to the pool area....and with no air conditioning in the elevators it can be suffocating in the heat.

We will hold on to the memory of lunch at Castaways with warm ocean breezes, waving flowers and amazing view of the ocean until we can return.

Have been to Huatulo for the third and final time. Enjoyed Secrets Huatulco in March - but later in the season would have been too hot! Awesome facility but as mentioned a problem with the chair game and for one event of comedy these "adults" acted like children ... and of course the polite Canadian lost to the loud American - personal opinion only but was entertaining nonetheless and for a chair and some shade.

Will we go back - not likely - pool staff not as attentive as in the past - was more timely to line up at the grill for a cold one.

The spa was outstanding - no question so if you are prepared to suffer thru a "presentation" the spa credits are well worth the breakfast pitch.

We stayed at the Secrets Huatulco in early April.

Rooms
Our room was on the top floor of Building 1 where we had a fantastic view of the Bay of Conejos. The only negative comment I would make about our room is concerning the glass doors for the toilet and shower. They don’t give you much privacy and they are right in front of the entry door which means that you will be exposed if someone comes in while you’re in there. To avoid this or to ensure general privacy, you can turn on your privacy light. Neat feature!

Gym
There’s a small gym at the hotel with good equipment. There is a water cooler and a basket of fresh fruits at your disposal. There is also Gatorade for purchase ($2)

Pool
Pools were great. They were large, warm and had a great view of the ocean. A few suggestions for improvement would be to increase the number of umbrellas (as mentioned by MANY others) and have music all around the pools. I understand that there is an entertainment pool and a quiet pool but the quiet pool was way too quiet for our taste and chairs with umbrellas at the entertainment pool were the first ones to go. We saw speakers around the quiet pool but there was no music playing. It would have been nice to have some low playing music (e.g. lounge, jazz). Service at the pool was exceptional!

Beach
The only time we went to the beach was for a walk. Like many mentioned the sand is coarse and the water not very swimmable.

Restaurants
For a 5 star resort, we were disappointed in the food. We travelled to many other hotels and given its star rating, its price and the reviews, we expected much better.

Breakfast at the Market was good but the food was the same every day. We would have liked to try Castaways for breakfast but because the hotel was not full, Market was the only option.

Lunch at Castaways was our favorite – they bring you guacamole and pico de gallo to munch on while you wait for your meal. The burgers at the Barefoot Grill were also very good.

For dinner we preferred Spice. Both food and service were very good. We did not enjoy our experience at CinCin. The service was very poor and our meals mediocre (e.g. steak was far from being juicy and tender). We also went to Oceana and Bordeaux. They were ok but not great.

We certainly did appreciate the fact that you do not need reservations for the restaurants. This allows you to go when you are ready and hungry.

Men are required to wear pants to a la carte restaurants (except Castaways) but are allowed to wear shorts if they sit on the outdoor patios.

Evenings
There is not much to do after dinner except to have a drink at Desire (sports bar) or the Sky Bar. This is an adult’s only hotel so it would be nice to have more evening entertainment (e.g. after dinner live music).

Would we go back? Not likely.

We spent two weeks at Secrets Huatulco, from March 14 to March 28, 2014. We booked a package with Air Transat, and flew from Vancouver with Enerjet. The flight was packed, due to Spring Break, and I would say that sardines have more space in their cans than we did in our seats, both coming and going. Not a pleasant flying experience, even though the crew was great and the flight went smoothly. Enough about that, on to Secrets.

We caught the shuttle from the airport, and were welcomed as part of a group of about 20. Check-in was smooth, and our TA's request for a room close to the restaurants etc. was honoured, which worked well for us due to some restrictions on my mobility.

Our room was in building 2, second floor, to the left of the Sky Bar, and our views were awesome! After a few initial hiccups, which we'll chalk up to so many people arriving that weekend (very close to !00% occupancy) - such as no fridge, no safe, no Ipod dock etc. - which were fixed quickly and efficiently.

Our room was well-appointed and comfortable, spacious, and we loved our balcony, where we spent quite a bit of time. We slept with the doors open so we could hear the waves crash on the beach, can't beat that sound!, and with the ceiling fan on, which ran quietly. Shower was great, and everything was in great shape. The room was always well-cared for, twice a day, and we certainly did remember to leave some pesos each day, as you cannot count on the same person looking after your room on a daily basis.

So, what else is there to discuss?
First of all, restaurants. We had breakfast at the Market restaurant 12 mornings and at Tamarindo twice. We found the choices at the Market buffet better so it worked for us, plus we got to know several of the young servers, which were wonderful.
Lunch was mostly sharing a burger from the pool grill, once we went to Castaways, which was very nice, but too much food for us at lunch. What an incredible view, though! Beautiful!
For dinner, we had the buffet three times, once Mexican, once down at the pool, and once Italian. We liked that it was in the Courtyard, choices were good, service again was great. Wish that there was a view from the Courtyard, rather than be closed in by buildings.
We had dinner at all the specialty restaurants at least once, most of them twice or more, except for the Oceana and Cin Cin. The food in general was good, but not outstanding. I would have loved a nice cut of lamb, but didn't find out till we were about to leave that I could have requested it. who knew! The fish usually was very nice, especially at Castaways, where we dined 3 times. After the first few days we also asked to be seated outside, even though we did follow the dress code, quite enjoyed that, actually. But you can't beat sitting outside at Castaways - what a wonderful experience. We also did the Tepanyaki experience at Spice, again it was good but not outstanding, but it was fun for sure. The one dining experience we did not enjoy was at Oceana, where we had to wait almost an hour and then were seated in a cold, empty area with the A/C blasting, and the service was very poor and the food mediocre, so we never went back again. We always chose to have the house Merlot with dinner and enjoyed it, a nice change from other all-inclusives.

Bars etc.
During the daytime we always had great service from the pool bar. We're not huge drinkers, but enjoy a gin and tonic (me) and a beer (DH), and for the rest they happily brought us bottled water.

After coming in from the pool, we initially would go to the Sky Bar and have another G&T and a beer, and check email etc., and after dinner would stop in there to get a Grand Marnier (me) and a cognac (DH). However, we found that after 3 days or so, the drinks changed. I don't know what they did, but the G&T became undrinkable, and the Grand Marnier became a conglomeration of Frangelico, Amaretto and whatever else. They would not admit to that, but it was a fact. So we started picking up our afternoon drinks at the Lobby Bar and bringing them to the Sky Bar, and stop in the Sports Bar for the after dinner drinks. Problem solved, but it was kind of annoying. Of course we have to remember that it's a nice kind of problem to have...

Beach:
The beach is gorgeous! We walked the beach most days, but....very early in the morning. I am not a morning person ordinarily, but unless you were out there before the sun came out, you could not be on the beach. Or at least we couldn't, we tried, but the heat was too much for us.
So instead we became pool people, very unlike us. This also meant I could not go snorkeling, one of my great pleasures, as 6 a.m. was too early, and later on in the day we just couldn't get to that end of the beach.

Pools:
Huge, gorgeous, warm! But another big caveat here: The towel game is truly ridiculous. Shade is very very limited, and there is no way most people can be out in the heat all day. We had heard about the towel games and had stated that we wouldn't play the game, we would, we were sure, find a spot. That lasted two days when we didn't get a spot anywhere at the pools or the beach, until about 4 p.m. Spent the day in the Sky Bar looking down, actually. So, after that we joined them since we couldn't beat them and were up 6 a.m., grab our towels (you need to take them to your room with you the day before, otherwise there won't be any) and go and find a spot with shade. We were on the beach the next 3 days till we realized we'd be better off by the pool. This is a crazy way to holiday, but we could not see spending two weeks looking out at all the people who got up early to get the chairs, even though we hated that we had to do it.
So, sorry Secrets, you MUST get more shade down there!

Entertainment: the entertainment at the Sky Bar in the evenings was very pleasant. We went to one show at the theatre, and decided it wasn't for us. Disappointing.

General appearance: others have mentioned some maintenance issues, these were quite apparent to us as well (DH is a builder). There were many 'little' things that need addressing, cracked or missing tiles, tipped up concrete on the pool surround, obvious cracks and patches in the stucco walls, etc. This should be addressed for a top-class resort.

Overall, we truly enjoyed ourselves. The hotel and the staff are great. There were a few things we didn't enjoy, as noted above. Finally, while we had heard about the heat, and we had been to Huatulco twice with a cruise and spent a day there each time, the heat really got to us, so be aware. It was around the 40 degree mark every day. When taking this into consideration, combined with the long flight (6 !/2 hours) wedged into a seat so tight I could not read my book because the person in front of me had her chair reclined, has us thinking we probably won't return to this resort. But make no mistake, it is beautiful!

We just returned from a week at Secrets. We stayed there from April 8 - 15, to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The resort is very nice, but just a little too modernistic for our taste. This is our third visit to Huatulco, our first on a cruise ship, and three years ago when we stayed at the Dreams resort.

The layout of this property is quite unusual. We didn't like the fact that the main area with most of the restaurants and entertainment is located at the top and in the middle of the resort, with no views of the beautiful bay. We tried all of the restaurants at the property, with our favorite at the Spice restaurant. It was definitely the best teppenyaki show that we have ever seen!

The entertainment staff was the greatest! We really enjoyed the fun activities with Miguel, Fabiola, Amanda, Maya, & Danny. We met them on our first day and they never forgot our names when we saw them at the pool or around the resort in the evening. They are truly an exceptional group of very hardworking kids!

We also enjoyed a latte every morning at the Coco Cafe and Matilde always made them with a smile!

Our room service was very inconsistent. We did have rose petals on the bed when we arrived and turn down service the first night, but after that it was hit or miss. Maybe our tips to the housekeeper were not enough perhaps.

The pools are the only place to be on hot days, but surprised at the wear that they are already showing for such a new resort. A special thank you to Magdalena who served us drinks poolside all week. The beach was disappointing with its very rough sand and unsafe swimming conditions...definitely not like the Caribbean!

All in all we had a very relaxing week in Huatulco but not sure we would return after experiencing a large demonstration in town. Very scary stuff with men in masks carrying bats & machetes fighting over their land rights. We had never experienced anything like this in Huatulco....but we were in Mexico. Thank goodness for an english speaking police officer who told us to return to resort, as our cab driver spoke no english whatsoever!

The most memorable experience from our trip was our excursion to La Bocana for a mud bath. It is only a $5 cab ride from the resort and you get a mud bath from the local ladies for $10 a person. The setting is beautiful, with cobblestone streets, the river running into the ocean and a beach with incredible waves (the local surfers favorite).

Things you need to bring with you: your own floats (the resort does not have any), insulated cups (your drinks get very warm), bug spray (I got many bites), lots of single bills (for tipping), water shoes (if you want to walk on the beach), and don't forget a hat (the sun is intense).

We met some wonderful people, loved the weather, enjoyed many cocktails, good food & great conversations during our stay at Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa!

Room Tip: We stayed on the 3rd floor of building 4, Room 4325, and had an incredible view of the beach & p...
