“great relaxing holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2014

Stayed at Secrets Feb 11- 18- this review will likely just mirror a lot of the other excellent reviews, so will keep it short

Resort is beautiful- clean, amazing view, beautiful grounds, lots of flowers, check in was a breeze- went right to the buffet for a snack- by the time we ate and got to our room, luggage was there

Rooms are beautiful- very clean, they filled our vase with flowers every day, I loved the big shower- you can open the wall to the room for an amazing view of the ocean

Bed was huge, clean, and super comfortable

Large balcony – but the walls don’t go right to the railing, so someone could fit in between the space to access your balcony- just lock your door

Gym is adequate but small, spa looked nice, but we didn’t have any treatments

Pool area is nice, lots of chairs- we never really had a problem getting a chair, and most times could get chairs with shade

Beach is nice and you can make use of the kayaks, paddleboards and mini sail boats

Food was excellent, occasionally my fish was over cooked, but mostly every meal was great- each night they set up a themed buffet- we went to the French restaurant on the night that the Italian was closed bc it was that buffet night- I felt bad for the servers, they just could not keep up, and I wanted the duck, sold out, my husband wanted the chateaubriand, sold out- I wish we had gone on another night- something to keep in mind- each day there is a list of which restaurants are closed that night

All other restaurants were good- service the odd time was poor, at the Italian our waiter completely disappeared- we sat with finished plates for so long, we finally just left- but this was a rarity
The resort set up a nice romantic dinner for Valentine’s day- they did a great job

Service was great at lobby bar, but lack of seating especially when there was entertainment

Coca Café was good- but out of the way- we stayed at Dreams in Puerto Vallarta and it was so convenient to get a coffee, snack, etc bc its in the middle of the resort

We went to La Crucecita and Santa Cruz one day- not a lot to do here and we went to La Bocana beach one day as well- we actually went for a run there, its not far from the resort and it’s a great surfing place with some bars

We booked a boat with Gilberto- you’ll find him on the beach- just my husband and I for about 4 hours one morning- $220CAD for both of us- we fished, saw sea turtles and dolphins, it was great- and he’s cheaper than booking through the resort

I would recommend this place to anyone, and I would be back – we loved that there are no kids allowed

We truly enjoyed the area, resort, all the people and the amenities.

The resort was just as it is looked on the website, relatively new (2011) and well maintained. The food was great, lots of variety and options to ensure everyone has something to eat and enjoy and the reservation system (no reservations except for the Japanese) good. Even the dress code was well thought out, e.g. men needed full dress slacks to sit inside for dinner or we could opt to sit on the patio of the restaurants and still enjoy the same menu if we wore shorts.

The liquor selection could have been better as the ‘top shelf’ selection is more mid-to-top shelf (e.g. not a deep of selection for scotch and no Captain Morgans).

The low point would have to be the lack of clarity for internet (wireless access). The resort claimed to have wireless in the suites however it was non-existent and only available in the Sky bar and business centre. It would have not been such an issue had the information been clear from the start. As we expected internet access in the suite we had left our email and text information as the point of contact for family and friends if they needed us (thankfully it was not needed), and the issue was frustrating as the answers (many of them) were not accurate or reasonable. Had we been offered to pay for a reliable service (e.g. $30 for the week) we would have been much happier; or had we been informed properly then we could have made alternate arrangements or managed our own expectations.

The spa was very good, clean and priced in line with many high end spas. The views wee awesome, especially given that the bay was clean and secluded.

The towns (Santa Cruz and La Crucecita) were easy to get to, very friendly, easy to navigate, secure and offered some good shopping (textiles and silver).

The resort’s service and the opportunity to ensure everyone enjoyed their stay was beyond what we have experienced before. Notably during our holiday we were extremely happy that the resort went out of their way to open one of the bars at 6 am (on several days) to allow us to watch some Gold medal events, including the gold medal hockey games, while also putting on an excellent breakfast buffet. Awesome experience and well appreciated.

If you are looking for somewhere to go that the weather is great, water is warm, people are friendly and you can unwind then Huatulco and Secrets are for you.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 5th and 6th level offer the best location to the beach and pools (swim out suites along...

We were there from Feb 11-Feb 25/14. The hotel was lovely; clean fresh looking and an absolute joy to stay at. We are in our mid 60s and really enjoyed all the walking we did, it was good exercise, so we could enjoy the food without guilt! The staff that we had dealings with were exceptional, were polite and just nice and even put up with our trying to speak Spanish! We would like to say thanks to Nestor A.Guzman at reception who took care of a little problem we had our first night he went above and beyond any time we went to reception. We would like to mention how great and helpful Daniel Alanis, Walther Araiza and Alberto Esteban, all with Guest Services, were, they went out of their way to make sure we had an enjoyable stay. Our chambermaid, Filadelfa, also was a joy and so good to us. Everything about this resort was exceptionally good; the food was amazing, the most seafood I've ever eaten at one resort, the quality was great, the staff everywhere were so pleasant. Thank you to Victor at the beach water sports activities for finally taking us out for a hobie cat lesson, after a few days of no wind.
Thank you, Secrets Huatulco. John and Charlotte, the Okanagan, Canada

My wife and I found this resort to be one of the best we been to. It is very clean and groomed, we found the grounds very well looked after. The employees are very professional and polite. We found the food was awesome and tasty, not blah and dull. Lots of selection. The restaurants and bars are well staffed and they serve you in good time. The rooms are awesome. Lots of space and lots of storage for your cloths and stuff. The cleaning staff do a great job of cleaning the room and restocking. Each evening we would enter our room with soft music playing on the tv, our beds turned down, rose pedals and a chocolate for both of us. The pools were great and the depth of them were just right. The main pool is very large. The beach was ample and was kept very clean. The only problem we had with the beach was that it was very steep and was hard to climb back up to the resort. Also the sand gets very hot during the day. We found the spa to be one of the best we been too. The way we were pampered was awesome. The only complaint we have about this resort is that there are way too many steps or different one step levels. Many people complained about stumbling when walking because of this. The resort has no warning signs or notices of the floor level changes. Although they have wheel chair ramps, they are very steep and are the same colour as the flat tile so if you are not aware of we're you are walking it can lead to you stumbling because you are not prepared for the slope. All in all we would recommend this resort to any one who wants to be pampered and have great food and drink and to relax.

We have stayed at other Secrets Resorts five times before this trip to Secrets Huatulco. My husband and I agree that this is by far our favorite Secrets! I would say the major age group at this resort was between 40-60 years old when we were there. There were some people in their 20’s-30’s as well as a few couples we met in their 80’s. We met many people around / in the pool. The pool area was set up to meet people unlike Secrets St. James in Jamaica. The resort has a great layout and we enjoyed it very much.

BEWARE….there are a lot of steps at this resort. Also, there is some areas that have one step up or down that a lot of people were missing and falling. This is mostly around the restaurant area.

There is an area on the beach that rents jet skis and tours. We met a lot of people at the resort that went through this company and loved their tours. A few people I spoke to were on deep sea fishing trips and saw tons of dolphins, sea turtles and a couple whales.

The people were friendly and nice. We never felt in danger etc. when we were in a taxi or during our trip downtown. The weather was wonderful. In seven days, I think we saw clouds for about one hour in total. The weather was hot but not very humid so it was very tolerable.

The resort can be as small or as large as you want it to be. If you are like us and you want to walk around at nights, you can go from a cocktail in the lobby, to dinner by the pool (buffet one night) to a night cocktail at the bar up above Castaways. We really enjoyed the layout of the resort.

Staff:
Most people at the resort spoke wonderful English so it was easy to communicate. When I called the front desk to request more hangers or a new hair dryer, the items would be delivered within 15-20 minutes. I could not believe how quick they were. In Jamaica I asked for a new alarm clock in the room and never received one before we left…and I even called on a daily basis. The service at this hotel is out of this world SPECTACULAR!!! This is the best service we have ever received at any Secrets Resort and pretty much anywhere we have traveled….and we travel 3-4 times a year to destinations outside of the USA.

Reception:
We were welcomed and greeted very nicely upon our arrival. Check in was quick and friendly where we were presented with a cold cloth and beverage. We went to the receptionist a few times during our stay to exchange American dollars for pesos. They were always friendly and helpful.

Rooms:
We were in building 3 and thought it was perfect. It was just outside of the restaurant area. We loved this location as we would get up in the mornings and be close to the Sky Bar where we would lounge around and read our books and check email as we stared at the ocean. I believe all rooms are ocean view / front. We were on the top floor of our building so it was a perfect view of the bay. The rooms are very nice and comfortable. This is probably the best air conditioning we have had at any resort in MX. The shower is wonderful and if you open the sliding door that separates the shower from the bedroom, you can look at the ocean while bathing. The water in the rooms is not safe to drink and that is posted on the mirror.

Entertainment:
Daytime activities were good. The entertainers would try to get people involved but were not overly pushy to do this. You could be as active or as laid back as you wanted to. Each night at 8:00 there was music in the Sky Bar. This was a nice environment to be a part of. Each of the nights provided a different theme and we enjoyed many of them. The evening entertainment in the theater was ok, not a highlight to our vacation.

Beach:
The beach is very large but the sand is pretty rough and pebble like. It is the darker sand so it is not powder white. The water is very dark and not as beautiful as the Caribbean or Hawaii but is still beautiful. The water was pretty calm a couple days but also got really rough a few days. It was much easier when we were in the water on a rough day to have a boogie board that you can get from the beach area. You can walk to the left and the water is a little calmer to swim in that directly out in front of the resort. It you walk to the left there is a cut over that takes you over one bay. This is a great bay to walk over to in the morning to see a beautiful sunrise (as you cannot see the sunrise from Secrets).

Pool Area:
If you want a raft to float in the pool you much bring one with you! There are NO rafts in the resort stores nor could we find one when we went into town. The weather is hot you are most likely going to want one during your stay. So many reviews talk about people reserving lounge chairs by the pool. Yes people do get up early to do this but you do not need to. There were chairs available during the day as people would be departing the hotel. The lower pool where the swim up bar is at is the most crowded and fills up first. However, there are lovely pools up one level that are quieter but have a better view of the bay. These chairs did not get taken as early. Most of the people we saw reserving chairs were large groups so they could sit together. Loved that they sat the towels out so you could get new towels during the day and you could get a couple vs. one per person with towel cards.

Restaurants:
Of course since this is a Secrets Resort there are no reservations, which we love. If there was a wait, it was quick and you could go enjoy a cocktail at a bar close by. We enjoyed the restaurants and the food was good. We did not try the buffets at night as it seemed the food sat out for a long time. However, we heard good reviews of those that did eat at the buffet. Most of the restaurants allow men to wear shorts if they sit on the outside patio area. My husband wore pants most nights but we still enjoyed sitting outside vs. inside the restaurants. Our favorite restaurants were the Mexican and Italian for dinner. Most people we spoke to liked Boudreaux the best but we ordered the filet and it was very overcooked. For lunch it was quick to grad lunch at the Baracuda bar and it was pretty good. This is right next to one of the pools so you can eat in your bathing suit. Castaways had a great lunch and much preferred this over the lunch buffet in the Market Café. Great menu with lots of choice. Great view as this restaurant sets up on top of the hill overlooking the bay.

Spa:
I did not receive a spa service while we were there but I heard they were amazing. The water circuit 1.5 hours before your service we heard was amazing and came free of charge with any purchased service. Even if you do not receive a spa service, walk up to the spa to see the view from the spa pool area…beautiful!!

This was mine and my husbands 10th vacation to a "Secret's Resort" and just loved it. Secrets Huatulco rates right up there with all of the Secret properties.

The resort is beautiful. The people are friendly and hard working. The drink choices were "Top Shelf". The food in all of the restaurants were delicious. Which reminds me to mention about the portion size. In a word "Large". At the restaurant "Castaways", my husband ordered a sirloin steak which was hanging over the edge of the plate it was so big. The flavour was very delicious. Appetizers at the Mexican restaurant covered the entire plate. Which goes for all of the restaurants. So don't feel that you have to order an item from every section of the menu. Every night in two areas of the resort they were always barbecuing something on the grill. There is no reason a person could go hungry at this resort.

We had a preferred swim-up room in block 5 and just loved it. The maid service was impeccable.

The beach was nice to walk on in the mornings. With it being so hot I would not recommend an afternoon walk unless you have water shoes. The sand gets very hot. Our 4th day in, my husband joked about seeing one small cloud in the sky.

Eduardo, the bartender at Rendevous was outstanding. He made quality drinks. Eduardo is so good, he could even make water taste wonderful.

Miguel, the Captain of Oceana was Outstanding. He made you feel like you were family.

We were impressed with Secrets Huatulco so much that we will definitely be back next February.

Room Tip: Block 5 has the nicest views and are overlooking the quiet pool.

Just returned on February 21st 2014 from Secrets Huatulco. We went with another couple that we often travel with and this was the best experience we have had in the Caribbean at a resort.

Rooms:
We stayed in building 300 (third floor) it was perfect, close to the restaurants and easy access to the beach and pool via the sky bar and elevator or the side walkway down to the pool. Loved the room service door which made deliveries to the room private and easy. They would simply put the delivery in the room service window accessible from the outside knock and you could open the service window from the inside (it is a locked door from the inside) The beds were comfortable and I don't think you could get a room with a bad view. However the bottom floor rooms with the hot tubs didn't give the best view (we used one as a hospitality suite before we departed) Loved the view of the ocean from the shower and the double sliding door out to the patio! The room was cleaned everyday and a new flyer was left in the evening telling you what was going on the next day at the resort, the weather ect. Nice little touch.

Restaurants:
All of the restaurants were GREAT! With a no reservation policy we NEVER waited in line for a table and could go whenever we wanted which was so great as we didn't have to wear a watch or think we have to hurry up for dinner. Tip you will not want to forget.... in the morning for the buffet the Mexican restaurant is also open with a similar buffet to the main buffet. I don't think a lot of people knew that but it was a great find for us one day 2! What I thought was great is that they moved the buffet dinner around each night and made you feel like you were in a different place each night with the way it was decorated and the food they served so you didn't feel like it was groundhog day! If you are going to go to the buffet for dinner just make sure you go early as the longer it sits (with any buffet) well the less tasty it is. There are enough restaurants that you can go to a different one each night! The service was also great at each restaurant at times we had 3 servers making sure we had everything we needed! For lunch they have 3 choices, the buffet up near the sky bar, the beach bar that served great food pulled pork, ribs, wings burgers fries hot dogs and nachos which were all really good or you can also go up to Castaways for a more sit down meal with appetizers main course and desserts. All are great options. Italian was my absolute favourite. TIP if you want something and it is not on the menu, just ask and more than likely they will get it for you!

Pools
The pools are all nice, temperature of the pools are great, they have some activities in the am like volleyball and aerobics in the pool where the swim up bar are, they also had a sound system that they played good music for most of the day, but if you wanted a quieter atmosphere then there were other pools that you could relax at. Getting a chair was at time difficult, guests aren't always courteous in the fact that they would go out and reserve 4 chairs at 7 am and then not show up until 3pm when they returned from their excursions. With the hurricane that happened a few years ago some of their trees as well were destroyed so getting shade is sometimes a challenge, most days we were in the pool for 80% of the day.

Night Life
If you are a partier and want to stay up the the wee hours then you might want to find another resort, they had different entertainment in the sky bar each night which was GREAT but it only went until 10 pm. There is no disco. We didn't really venture up to the main theater however I didn't really hear people talking about the shows, they had things like Karaoke but like most other resorts we have stayed at I don't know that they really had an entertainment staff in the evening. They did have a bar that stayed open until 1am we went there one night, the views are spectacular but didn't spend a ton of time there as the crowd was pretty sparse. They had all kinds of different booze so you will find something you will like, crown, grey goose were our two favourites. The fresh squeezed orange juice with the grey goose went down pretty good all week!

Staff
Everyone was really friendly and would do whatever they could to make you happy. When you said Thank You they all responded with "My pleasure" which I think was a really nice touch. Jose Luis was our favourite staff member. He was one of the pool drink staff and he was great at his job. He was always coming by to see if you needed anything and got to know our drink orders, he had a day off on Wednesday and we really missed him. We told him the next day that we didn't have the same experience without him there!

Excursions
We met Valentino our first day on the beach and we ended up booking a day to go out on our own on jet ski's down the bays of the coast. it was $100 per person for an hour and well worth the money, we went out as a group of 6 booked it the day before and he had the jet skis waiting for us. We also ventured into Santa Maria for the day on our own around 4pm (so it wasn't as hot as during the day) it was a beautiful little town with the market shops and little restaurants. We ate at a Don Porfirio which is just outside of the Dreams resort and it is a must stop! The food and service was spectacular! Most of us had steak and seafood which was all cooked on a charcoal grill they had on the street Cesar salad made at the table was killer! We felt safe the entire time, in fact we didn't see a police officer or any type of security while we were there.

Spa
We had a couple massage and hydrotherapy and it was AMAZING. I had reflexology and my husband had a Swedish massage. You get coupons when you arrive so you can use those towards your treatments and they always have specials each day (found in the flyer they deliver to your room each night) the view from up there is breathtaking so took lots of pic while we were up there. They also have a gym which was OK.

Hopefully this helps you as you decide where to stay.
