“Building 5, Swim-Out Room”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2013

We just returned from Secrets Huatulco. We booked a Preferred Swim-out room and were simply delighted with it. Our return flight to Calgary was cancelled after several delays/ hours so we had to spend another night there. We were given a standard room, which was very nice -- Building 3, 2nd floor.

The rooms are all beautiful – large, modern and extremely clean. The Swim-out rooms are located in buildings 1, 5 or 6. Building 1 is high up and near the lobby. The view is nice, but .... it's far from the beach. Building 5 is by the quiet pool. The swim out room view was perfect from here. Building 6 is near the activity pool, the 1st floor rooms would not have a view of the ocean, only of the pools. I would recommend you request Building 5 - book a standard room or swim out. If you book a hot tub room, you will be on the first floor of the other buildings, and you must fill the tub yourself. The glass door in the bathroom is not a big deal, it’s frosted glass and so is the shower. No problems with privacy. One caution would be with the room service door. It is accessed from the outside of the room, so make sure you don't store anything on that shelf and that you latch the door when not being used. You may want to bring your own pool floats, didn't see any provided by the hotel.

The food at this resort was really good. We ate at all restaurants, and had no complaints whatsoever. The service was also very good. Yes we had to wait a bit, but we are on vacation and in no rush. The staff work very hard to please, and you can see that. The wine was really good. Ask for the Chiliean wine but the Mexican wine as also pretty good. Room service was fast and efficient, and since we had a swim-out room, we enjoyed breakfast outside several times. We also had waiter service during the day for drinks. Please tip the waiters, they also work very hard. There is a coffee shop by the theatre that makes specialty coffee and sweets, cookies -- very nice. The entertainment is typical -- not great, but entertainment is not why you book Secrets. If you want entertainment, book a cruise or Las Vegas.

We took a taxi around the area for $20./hour. Drove us to the highlights, took photos. We toured for 2 hours. It is very safe in the area, we walked to La Bocana Beach. Not that far, and felt very safe. We passed by many security guards on the road and we're later told that a new RIU hotel was being built at that location.

The beach is nice, yes there are jellyfish – it is the ocean! Secrets has no control over that. The weather was perfect & hot …. No need for a jacket here in the evening. My husband took free sailing lessons, and really enjoyed it.

We tried the “fried grasshopers” at the Mexican restaurant, they’re pretty good!! One good thing about the restaurants, if the men do not want to follow the dress code by putting on long pants, etc. you can still go to the a-la-cartes as each has outside seating as well as inside. We thought that was a nice feature.

WiFi is available at no cost, choose the one with the best connection. Username is Secrets.hux, password is secrets2011. They have computers for use in the Vacation Club room if you don't want to bring your own. If you booked preferred club, they are also available there.

Overall, we liked it here. Would return and would recommend.

Room Tip: Request Building 5 --- standard rooms are on 2nd & 3rd floors. Swim out rooms on 1st. Views fr...

I gave this an average rating because it is an average resort and I had above average expectations of Secrets.

The food was palatable but monotonous by the end (as the case with most AI resorts) but we did manage to get into town for one exceptional dinner which was a great change. Bar service was hit and miss- great at the pool but terrible at the Sky Bar.

We were not happy with the Preferred Club jacuzzi room- an obstructed view and no in-suite internet (we were located further away from the main part of the building). This has been mentioned by other reviewers and I wish I had read them prior to booking.

The room was fresh and modern however cleaned daily at varying times. Sometimes at 9 a.m. and other days 4 p.m.

Another drawback, and has also been mentioned, was the taping of the television show. Balancing demanding jobs, this is our time to rest, relax and unwind. We found it extremely aggravating to have the photo crew take over pool, entrance and sky bar spaces. It felt the needs of the guests came secondary to the operational needs of the crew. Traveling during peak time, it is expensive and we would have chosen a different resort if we had been aware of this.

The weather was great and we did not mind the couple of overcast days. The sun is very hot so bring lots of sunscreen!

The best part of the resort is definitely the scenery! The Huatulco area is stunning and someday we would love to explore this area further.

We stayed at Secrets from march 16th to march 23rd and we really loved it. First, Huatulco is so beautiful! There are amazing landscapes, nature everywhere and lots of beautiful sandy bays! The weather was nice too, we had one cloudy day but the rest of the week was sunny and really hot.

The hotel has really amazing rooms. We loved our ocean sight from the room even though we were only on the 2nd floor. The only thing we hate about Secrets room is that glass door separating the toilet from the room (it was the same problem in Secrets Montego Bay, Jamaica). It is elegant but it really lacks privacy. Thats the only negative point about the room.

The food was nice too. It was not always perfect but really good! Best restaurant was Castaways for lunch (we ate there every time and enjoyed it, really good burgers and salmon!) and the food at the "show" table at the Spice was simply amazing (chicken, shrimps and tenderloin).

The beach is kinda irritating for the feet so be sure to bring sandals to walk on it. The water was beautiful for the first 3 days (and we could swim in it without problems) but was more agitated the last 4 days and we had trouble getting in it (there was also a red flag those days). But we could go swim at the beautiful infinity pools!

We also went on the 7-bays tour (from Amstar I think... about 50$ each) and it was REALLY amazing! We got to see very beautiful fishes while snorkeling and beautiful landscapes. I would highly recommend that tour!

Overall a great experience in Huatulco!!

Room Tip: Lower rooms will be more far away from the Sky bar, where there are some "music shows" in...

We just returned on the 19th of March,2013. Our trip was one of the best yet. The resort had a very quick check-in procedure and we were in our room 5 min after arrival to the resort. the rooms were beautiful; we had a jacuzzi room but did'nt need it. The pool rooms seemed nicer than we first thought, we thought about privacey issues. The resteraunts were all very good, we did't eat at the Mexican resteraunt. Just so you know, the resteraunts allow men to wear dress shorts if you sat outside. This was a great tip to learn as we had to pack too many clothes. The beach was beautiful but a little steep. All in all a very relaxing vacation; not a place for night life.

First and foremost TAKE LOTS OF STRONG (at least 45) SUNSCREEN. The intense heat is unbelievable. +36 in Huatulco is not the same as +36 in other destinations (We have been to the Mayan Rivieria and Dominican). The sun is very intense and this isn't even their hot season!!

This was our first vacation to a Secrets destination and our first trip to the Huatulco Area. Let me say from the start we are quite particular (picky). Overall we were pleasantly surprised but there were a few things that could be improved. When we book at an Unlimited Luxury resort we do expect that and Secrets is almost (but not quite) there with their Huatulco property.

Check-In/Check-Out - Travel from the airport wasn't far, maybe 20-30 minutes. When we arrived at hotel they had a bellman telling us which check-in desk to go to. Received a refreshing welcome drink and cool cloth. Check in was quick and painless and we (along with our bags) were in our room less than 10 minutes after stepping off the bus. Check out was the same with our bags being whisked away and held until our airport shuttle arrived. Very impressed with this process.

Bars - The SkyBar is in a great location and is always a great place to sit and enjoy the breeze (which is very welcomed considering the intense sun). Usually found a place to sit with no problem, servers were pretty prompt. *Not all bars had the same liquor. You might get a specific drink one day but the next day they say they don't have it. For example, when sitting at SkyBar, hubby had to go to Desires Lounge to get me a drink (Baileys). Again, not a huge issue but would expect if they don't have they offer to find some for you.* Also, there seems to be a lack of ashtrays throughout the entire resort. When you would ask for one, the bartender/server would make a joke about a Mexican ashtray and hand you a glass with some water in it. Don't get me wrong it served the purpose but is kind of gross and lacking in luxury. If the resort is going to allow smoking they need to ensure they offer all the materials.

Nightly Entertainment - Pretty disappointing. They did have nightly entertainment but the theatre was in a small dark theatre room at the back of the resort with very uncomfortable chairs. Would love to see a bigger, more open space with nice comfortable chairs.

Restaurants - We like to book at resorts that don't limit or require reservations for a la carte restaurants and don't require guests to wear armbands. There are 6 a la carte restaurants to choose from and 1 buffet. We tried 3 of the restaurants (The Peking Duck at Spice was wonderful)and were not disappointed with any of them. We never had to wait for a table at any restaurant but we did see some people walking around with those notification buzzers so maybe with bigger groups the wait times might be a little more. The buffet offered a nice variety for breakfast and lunch (different options every day for lunch). The Barefoot Grill located by the pool offered beach food from 10:00-5:00 every day(amazing burgers!!). Overall no complaints with the food.

Room Service - We used room service for breakfast, lunch and supper throughout our stay. Our orders always arrived hot, presented nicely and always arrived before the time they quoted. The dishes were always removed promptly from the Secrets box. *They could have put a little more thought into the placement of the room service box as it is mixed in with the closet shelving so just remember not to put your belongings on the room service shelf*

Pool - Lots of pools but they are trying to squeeze in way to many chairs around them. Very crowded. Also, they do require more umbrellas. Some other reviews complain about people reserving chairs, personally this doesn't bother me but the resort may eliminate it by offering more umbrellas. The strange thing was there was hotel employees walking around and putting the umbrellas down when people were sitting in the shade under them I couldn't figure out why they were doing that.

Beach - The beach was nice but again the resort could offer more palapas. The beach is big so they would definitely benefit from putting up more shaded areas. My #1 complaint about the resort is the fact they allow vendors to walk amongst the palapas. I understand this is part of Mexico but we go on vacation to relax. When there are vendors approaching every 5-10 minutes (no exaggeration) it gets really old really fast!! I think the resort cheapens itself by allowing this. At the other resorts we have stayed at the vendors have to stay away and aren't allowed within the resort's designated beach area and guests can approach them. If I want to shop I can go to the resort gift shop or go into town. I know there are some of you saying that we could just stay at the pool but the resort offers the pool AND the beach for our enjoyment. We shouldn't have to hide from the vendors when we are the one's paying to be there. The beach vendors would be one reason that I wouldn't visit the resort again.

Room - The room was great. The glass door on the bathroom was a little strange but we got a good laugh about it. There is frosted parts in all the right places so no big deal. The rainshower was nice and I loved the view of the bay while having a shower. Our room was cleaned every day when we got back from pool/beach and nightly turn-down is a nice touch. I thought the bed was kind of hard but didn't keep me from sleeping.

Town - We went to Santa Cruz (ask for cabdriver Nacho) one day and was ok. We don't go on vacation to shop so the amount of shopping and the products available didn't really matter a lot to us. We like to look and walk around. Another day we went to La Cruceita and it seemed our cabdriver dropped us off in the scariest part of town. We had a guy follow us for 2 blocks and when my hubby got a little firm with him he backed off but then his buddy picked up the chase (so to speak) a block later. We really didn't spend much time here (probably an hour) for this reason so if you choose to go to town make sure your driver drops you off downtown. Please don't misinterpret my comments as a judgement about the whole town I just didn't feel safe in the specific area where we were, just be aware of your surroundings.

So, I have probably missed some really great points about the hotel (there are lots of them) but in our opinion, Secrets Huatulco doesn't offer the Unlimited Luxury they advertise. We have experienced Unlimited Luxury in the past at other resorts so we know we can be pleased, Secrets Huatulco just doesn't quite measure up for the amount of money we paid. This, combined with the beach vendors, is why we probably won't be returning.

Room Tip: Our room was 2305 which is located in Building D on the 3rd floor. Relatively quiet area and the be...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here for 1 week in December the weather was pretty much bang on 37C every day but for some reason it didn't seem too hot. Must have been the cool ocean breeze and the refreshments! The hotel was top notch and we really liked not having to make reservations and not having a limit on a la cartes. The food was very good with the exception of a few steaks, the cuts were great but it seems like no matter how you order it the steak still comes however they felt like cooking it all the way from well done to rare! Oh well, we run into that problem in Canada... The resort felt like a smaller one due to how the rooms are split up and even though it got consdierably busier on the weekend with local traffic it still felt quiet and peaceful. There were very few rowdies and it was a great romantic getaway. We really enjoyed the 2 day trips we took and Huatulco was a wonderful place to visit.

We stayed at Secrets Huatulco from March 4 - 18th and we loved Huatulco and Secrets. Go for the weather, none of that late afternoon rain you experience on the Caribbean side. The towns of La Crucecita and Santa Cruz still offer great charm and we found the people friendly and not as pushy as other destinations.

Our flight with Transat was great, we upgraded to Club Class and it was well worth it. Bit of a minor hiccup on the return with a delay waiting for a flight crew who were delayed because of weather in Toronto, so got into Edmonton a couple hours late. No biggie, it was weather and not like their competitor who cancels flight.

Now the resort...

Check in

Very smooth. They had an envelope with our name and room keys, so we were in our rooms within 5 minutes of arrival. Surprisingly they took no credit card imprint. Our luggage arrived within 10 minutes, and we were off exploring.

The Room

Very clean and modern. Much ado about nothing with the controversial shower. I loved to have a shower and look out of the balcony doors. No way could anyone but the birds see in. We were in Building 3 and in a room far from the Sky bar and everything was quiet. Awesome views from the balcony and loved to have our morning coffee out on it. Wifi worked in the room a little slow, but worked well on the balcony. The room was cleaned everyday and most nights we had turn down service.

The Restaurants

For breakfast we ate most mornings at Tamarindo. It was quieter, hardly used and had all the essentials food wise, maybe less than the Market Cafe, but the serenity made up for it. The staff provided great service and we loved to practice our Spanglish with them and they would help us, and they asked words in English. I recommend passing on the lineups at the Market Cafe.

We tried Barefoot Grill for lunch for the first week, but soon tired of it. We didn't want to lose out on precious beach time. It would be nice if they would changed the food offering occasionally. We both got our only case of the trots here, but after a couple of Imodium were raring to go again. Lunch at the Market cafe or Castaways was awesome.

We only ate at the a la Cartes. Being both in the service industry we are not big buffet people. We never had a bad meal. The portion sizes were perfect for the health conscious. The presentation was also very good. No real favourite food wise but we enjoyed Oceana and Castaways the most as we could enjoy the outdoors and hear the ocean. Tip, it's not on the menu but the coconut ice cream is heavenly. Serving staff was always good and friendly, and obviously proud of their jobs. The wine was very good by AI standards, the Chilean Sauvignon blanc was good and the red wine served at the proper temperature and not the ambient temperature.

The beach

We are beach people, so can offer no comment on the pools. During the first week their were jelly fish. I scuba dived and they were present in other Huatulco locations, so not specific to Bahia Conejos. On those days we just went over to the cove on the left and there were no jellies. In the second week no jellies to be seen. Drink service was awesome. Look for Christopher, he is the best. Man does he work hard, wish I had half his energy. It was funny to watch the towel game start at 7 AM as we viewed from our balcony. We would go down from 9-10 and have no problem. We did see staff removing towels from saved loungers. Yeah! Wifi worked, but was weak, and you would have to reconnect often. The vendors on the beach were great, not pushy, except for Pepe. My wife found that George and Thomas had the best selection for silver. It was nice to connect with these people, get to know them and learn of their lives. We take so much for granted.

The Spa

We went twice, once at the beginning and once at the end. Spoil yourself and give it a try. We had an 80 minute couples massage. The hydrotherapy was awesome as well. Interesting that the credit card terminals took credit card chip cards. Awesome, nice to see for security reasons.

I would like to thank all contributors to these reviews and the forum. It helped us tremendously in choosing Huatulco and Secrets. It helped us know the do's and don'ts and insured a most relaxing vacation.

Just a side note on the complaining on the filming. Chill out! We found it interesting to see the filming, and see the stars. If something little as this ruins your vacation, wow that is really sad.

Room Tip: Choose a room over 10 (example) be far enough from the sky bar. The higher the number the further aw...
