“Worth a return trip!”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

This was our first time to Huatulco and our travel agent recommended the Secrets Resort. It is an adults only resort which was great. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The resort was very clean. We had a swim out room which was on the pool level so that was great and I highly recommend getting one of those rooms. If the pool was too busy we could tan and swim right outside our room. With the la carte restaurants you did not have to make reservations for them. You could go for dinner whenever you wanted which was a big plus.

We have already started planning our trip for next year and we want to bring our daughters and their boyfriends and any of our family and friends who would like to join us. I am recommending this resort to everyone that I talk to.

A+!

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean. We had a swim out room which is on the pool level. It was very quiet.

This was a beautiful resort. We are both very busy in our everyday life so when we go on vacation we just want to sleep and eat! When we first got there we were a bit disappointed because we got to our room and it had two beds instead of 1 kingsize. We asked to change and they moved us to a kingsize but the room was right over the main plaza and it was SO noisy. Like I said we needed rest on this trip so we moved back to the room with 2 beds (which were very comfortable) and had a great quiet room (5220).

It was very hot while we were there and very dry, the surrounding area was brown and not too appealing but the ocean/beach was beautiful. But don't try to walk on the sand in your bare feet because it is so hot and will hurt. One thing that disappointed us was that we were unable to swim in the ocean because there were jellyfish in the water everyday. That was too bad! But we were always able to get a nice spot on the beach under a cabana.

We also took full advantage of the spa. They sold us a package of 6 massages which we used as 3 couples massages and they were wonderful! The spa staff was great and very friendly, highly recommend.

The dinners were very good and it was nice that we didn't have to make reservations for them. Our favourites were "Castaways" and "Oceana" which had the best views of the water. The buffet for lunch and dinner were great and Juan Jose on the omelette station was very friendly and made our mornings.

All and all we would recommend this resort!

Room Tip: If you want lots of peace and quiet choose a room far away from the main building. We stayed in 5220...

CONTEXT

I am a middle-aged, experienced traveler to AI resorts. This is our third trip to Huatulco, last year we stayed at Dreams (previously the Gala which we also stayed at). I have been to many AI resorts in the Mayan, Puerto Vallarta, Cuba, Antigua, etc. We typically go for two weeks. We must have a balcony and enjoy spending time there so we always get Oceanview or better.

AIRLINE

This year Air Canada added Huatulco to their line-up. This was great as it was more convenient for us to travel on a Saturday than the Tuesday offered by Sunwing. No problems with the flight (except they never have Sparkling Wine or more than a bottle or two of two of Duty Free Liquor). Our AC rep was Magaly. Her orientation on Huatulco and the Hotel was repetitive and useless. Our return flight was delayed five hours – due to weather. Now, you cannot blame the Airline or the local rep. for this – but HOLY SNAPPIN’ our rep. was totally CLUELESS. She kept insisting we were leaving on time when the AC web-site showed the plane hadn’t even left Toronto. She wanted us to go to the Airport at 11 AM and wait – outside the Airport in the mid-day heat. We ended up going to the Airport at 3 PM and left late at night arriving in Toronto in the early morning hours. Our trip was six weeks ago and as you can see I am still steamed at her. The bus to the airport was mismanaged by the Hotel. Boarding the bus and loading the luggage was not coordinated so some people were separated from their baggage.

ROOMS

Preferred rooms are spread out amongst all the buildings. Preferred have the swim-out rooms or Jacuzzi on the balcony. However, they are all on the main floor of the buildings. We prefer a great view so we did not select a preferred package. If you want a view do not select building six. We selected building four (based on TA recommendations). We wanted the third floor, but were placed on the second. It was fine – the view was great. Room 4209. Only problem with the room was the maid service (not quality but timing). Arriving to clean the room at 4:30 is too late. We like to relax in our room before preparing for the evening. I did call once and they offered to come then. When I said it was too late they hung a notice on the door that stated we declined to have the room cleaned. Our room was not cleaned 3 days out of the two weeks.

LAYOUT (the Skybar is in the centre between building 1 and 2)

Bldg 1 / Bldg 2
Bldg 3 / Bldg 4
Bldg 5 / Bldg 6
Sm. Pool / Lg. Pool (with activites and swim up bar)
Ocean

OVERBOOKING

During our second week the hotel was overbooked by 15 rooms. The hotel offered a week’s free accommodation if you would move to Dreams for four days. It may have been because they had a convention at the same time. We did not take them up on the offer and were not pressured. Many people went for the offer so I don’t know if anyone got bumped.

RESTAURANTS

The food was good – plenty of choices in all restaurants. We never had dinner in the Buffet so can’t speak to that. You must dress up for dinner or you will be seated outside in the square between all the restaurants. No shorts for men! It is too hot to enjoy dinner this way, so men – bring a cool pair of long pants. If you like to dress down for dinner then you can still enjoy the a la carte menu by sitting in the square. The no reservation system works well. If you have a large group - go early and they will accommodate you. French restaurant was the best.

DRINKS

Wine and usual mixed drinks were good. I finally figured out that the diarrhea I always get on these trips is due to over-serving myself at the bar and not the cleanliness, water or unwashed fruits or vegetables. Bring the Pepto-Bismol and make sure you have something to eat when you drink.

SCUBA-DIVING

Once again went diving with Hurricane Divers in Santa Cruz. Two good dives. Well organized. Check out their web-site hurricanedivers.com. You can e-mail Roberto for information.

GOLF

We went at the crack of dawn, reasonable price (1200 pesos pp with cart), nice challenging course.

BEACH

The sand is really rough. I read comments about it being like ground seashells – no exaggeration. You must have some sort of footwear on the beach. After about 10:30 AM the sand is so hot you can get blisters on your feet just walking from the water to the palapas/unbrellas. I am not kidding.

LA CRUCESITA

Lovely town. Once again, go early because it is hot. I bought a couple of lovely outfits at Telares Oaxaquenos. It is a textile/weaving store. They have linens and clothes. Those lovely long cool skirts in every colour imaginable were $19. They have pretty embroidered matching tops and belts. Nice shirts for men. The address is Calle Flamboyan #116 Sector H. I bought two outfits for about $80 total. You cannot get clothing like this at home. It is unique, good quality and pretty. Worth the trip to town. No negotiating at this store.

COOKING CLASS

I've never done anything like this before. One of our party is into acitvities and booked this cooking class in La Crucesita at Chilies & Chocolate. It was the Street Food class and was a lot of fun for a reasonable cost. Web site: huatulco-catering.com

SECRETS COMPARED TO DREAMS

Secrets is more upscale and adults only (majority were 40+, average 50-60). The main gathering place at night is the Sky Bar. It has a great view but that’s all. Hard to get a drink from the one small bar. You can go in the sports bar around the corner if it takes too long. The main bar at Dreams is more user friendly. The rooms are more luxurious and larger than at Dreams. Restaurants were good at both places. The preferred rooms are worth it at Dreams they have better views and are near the Lounge.

Room Tip: For more privacy on the balcony select buidling 3 or 4.

Our first winter vacation in Mexico was fabulous at Secrets Huatulco. We enjoyed the a la carte restaurants and the buffets. Our room was quiet and the view of the ocean was spectacular. We had a hot stone massage at the spa and can't say enough about the service we received from Adriana who guided us through the hydrotherapy and Delores and Galdina who gave us an amazing massage. The front desk and consierge staff were always helpful and pleasant. The pool volleyball was great fun thanks to the Secrets activity staff. Also loved the celebrations for International Women's Day - great idea Ismael! See you all next time. Donald & Karen

Stayed at Secrets Huatulco the last two new years for 10 days each. NOTHING could have been better then what we had. We have stayed at the other hotels in Huatulco for New Years including the sister property Dreams, but Secrets Huatulco will be our new years Eve hotel for many years to come. We have spent other New Years in the Caribbean and find the weather of Huatulco the best. That coupled with the Secrets beach, food, drinks, service and New Years celebration, we are hooked.

Room Tip: personally the rooms are all great locations, but I prefer the upper buildings for convenience to th...

We are currently at secrets and I must say I could not have been more disappointed, First, the positives, the location and weather were awesome! Service was very good as well, but that's it.

We booked a preferred club jacuzzi suite, thinking it would be similar to excellence club....WRONG!!! The jacuzzis are only on the first floor and your view is the roof top of the building in front of you.after two hours of complaining we were moved "up" in floors but "down" in room category. Translation although we were assured our room would be treated as a preferred room it simply wasn't the case. After four trips to the concierge on day I spoke with the manager and got another empty non followed up promise of improvement. If you have ever stayed at excellence as a ec guest you know what service is. I asked if it were possible for some type of comp for our troubles, spa treatment, beach dinner etc and was told "I'll check and get back witth you" but we never received a reply.
As for the jacuzzis they are literally back to back with the adjacent room and offer zero privacy or romance.
The entire week we have been here a film crew for a Mexican soap opera have been on property shooting and has been a huge pain in the butt for everyone. They take up the sofas all around the property, shine huge spot lights all over, including into castaways restaurant one night we were there causing four tables to leave prior to them finishing their meal. Castaways manager called hotel management but it took nearly half an hour to get the spotlight repositioned, and the it was angled directly in our room. The front desk was able to resolve the issue in about ten minutes.
Entertainment is a complete joke! Guys begging for good reviews for horrendous jr high school quality productions. The preferred club is basically open to anyone....we paid for a service everyone used.
The resort only has six floats for 290 rooms which is laughable. Bring your own float.
Unlike sandals or excellence you don't get alcohol in the room other than corona in the fridge. You have to call room service to get a drink in your room.
My wife is the least picky eater in the world and found the food at the marketplace lunch Buffett as well as dinner horrible, and the Mexican restaurant in edible.
While in the preferred club everyday guests were complaining to management about these and other issues were basically blown off daily. The let everyone vent but at no time was a satisfactory resolution reached.
The rooms are not very well insulated. Whenever a guest in an adjacent room showers or uses a blow dryer it's like it's in your room!
Turn down service I
Begins at 5 pm.....wtf....we are getting ready for dinner then!
We were so disappointed and can only hope this. Is not indicative of all secrets. We are supposed to go to secrets st James in Jamaica in May but based on this trip we are reconsidering.

Room Tip: Don't was money on preferred club

Overall, I really loved this resort. It was beautiful and very clean. BUT - and this was huge for me - the bathroom has glass doors. Absolutely no privacy - if the room door is opened, anyone in the hallway can see you in the shower or sitting on the toilet. I can't imagine how anyone could think this was a good idea.
I was traveling with a friend, not a spouse and this was very ackward. After a lot of complaining, we were given a shower curtain to block off the area - it helped, but very tacky. We were told not to tell anyone else that we were given this - because they didn't want to have to do this for a lot of people. We were there with a group of 50 - 90% of our group was very uncomfortable with the bathroom openess. Even those who didn't mind felt it to be very odd.
For this one reason, I would never go back to this hotel or recommend it to anyone. The area in general is wonderful and there are a lot of resorts.

Room Tip: The room itself was great - with the exception of the glass bathroom doors.
