“excellent time in Huatulco!”
Reviewed March 9, 2013

Just got home from the Huatulco! we stayed for the first week of March in the Secrets Huatulco and it was absolutely amazing. Wonderful hotel with beautiful rooms, comfortable beds and good food. The entertainment team was really friendly and so much fun! We really enjoyed the evening entertainment as well as the fun sports and classes that were offered during the day. Ismael was especially helpful and friendly, he always made us laugh and feel comfortable and happy. All in all, great hotel, great service, great people. We will be back!

My husband and I recently returned from a stay at Secrets Huatulco and I can't say enough about how great this place was! This is our second time visiting Huatulco but our first time at Secrets and we will definitely return. We travel to Mexico or the Caribbean every year and this resort was one of the best we have stayed at.
Our room was very nice. We upgraded to the Preferred Club and we had a Jacuzzi on our patio, upgraded mini bar and other amenities that were very nice. Our room was large, had a fantastic ocean view and was very quiet. It was cleaned every day early so if we wanted to go back to our room and relax we could. The shower was huge and had plenty of hot water every day.
We ate breakfast at the buffet, lunch was usually out by the pool and every night for supper we ate at a different restaurant. They had Mexican, Asian and Oceana. My favorite was the French restaurant where we ate for Valentine's Day and had a really wonderful veal chop!
The beach is not the best but we have seen but they had awesome pools and we spent most of our time around the these. They could use a little more shade around the pools but the service was wonderful. My biggest pet peeve is the people that save lounge chairs at the pool early in the morning and then never use them.
We really like Huatulco and will definitely come back again and would stay at Secrets.

People have unrealistic expectations when going to places. We had a bad experience at one restaurant one day but went again another day and was great. Service can be bad or good just depending on who you get just as you do wherever you are from whether us, Canada, etc. There are gonna be extremely rude dumb people and really cool people...just like anywhere else in the world. The night shows don't start until 9:30 which is hard to stay up for since bring in sun and drinking. Would be cool if they started those earlier. The do have movies you can get to take back to room just ask concierge. The biggest disappointment was the channel list said 23 was PLAYBOY channel butit wwas not. It was really old g rated porn that were played on repeat for a day which was more like a really bad movie with bad nudity in it. The place is great and definitely a great place to RELAX and enjoy view. Was in top of building 1 and had the best WiFi signal on Balcony which worked great to Skype with kids. Ignore the people's reviews that are complaining about dyupid little things...because those people are dumb and don't know how to enjoy themselves because they are too busy being dumb.

Absolutely amazing weather but be careful not to burn!
The resort is luxurious with a couple of issues that need to be addressed. The competition for an adult only resort is sparse so Secrets may not take the following comments seriously.
Rooms: we like to travel preferred status. The other 5 star resorts this means wonderful views! Well not at Secrets one of the preferred options are ground floor rooms which look out onto the building in front of you. The red roof of that building blocks the view that you expect to see. We did create a little fuss and changed to a much better room the next day. Of course this was a cheaper room but we paid preferred price. I personally think the preferred rooms should be identified as having. Blocked bay view! Now we could have had a swim room but limits ones privacy. Just buyer beware! We loved our "down grade!"
Service: Services was very good , mind you we are very engaging with staff and never really have issues in this area.
Maid service: Service was good but really did not stick to a schedule so sometimes your room was cleaned prior to your 4 pm return from the pool. I think the rooms should have been prepared prior to 4pm.
Pool: excellent pool system , large BUT. They should scrub it on a more regular basis. The grout was blak in spots. Ok a number of spots! Most 5 stars know that black mould is not part of the All inclusive plan! Around the pool bar tiles were missing an they should have been replaced to avoid guests being scratched as they waited for drinks.

The big issue was that Secrets were overbooked and some were mandated to be moved to Dreams which is the sister resort and not adults only. Now Dreams is a wonderful resort, most people may have looked at it but made the choice to go to Secrets. If that was the case why be mandated to go to Dreams! Some guests were asked if by wanted to move, others offered money and some just moved. So George Orwell's Animal Farm does exist! We are not all equal based on who we fly with. The most important question would be". Which airline" will ensure you stay at your chosen resort?

Food: excellent. Quality was very good and no complaints - and you know I would be honest! Variety is the spice of life and Secrets did provide variety at a 5 Star plus level

Accidents waiting to happen! This place could fill an emergency very quickly! Ramps with various gradients everywhere, with steps coming out of nowhere! You could not even think of WUI. Walking under the influence!

Seriously the weather is the key.

Would I return to Secrets. Yes it was a great vacation, the staff were so obliging and catered to our every need!

My comments are not meant to put you off but just be aware especially re overbooking and rooms without a true view!

This is our second time in Huatulco, and we really love this area. The first time we stayed at the Barcelo, but Secrets is so much better. There are two huge pools and a wide beach at this resort. You can also walk over to the next bay where there is another natural beach that is very beautiful. The grounds are very well taken care of, and the pools and beach were cleaned every morning.

The rooms were very clean, and modern. We were on the second floor of building 6, and we had a view of both the activity pool and ocean. Some friends were in building 5 which is near the quiet pool, and they had an even better view of the ocean. The rooms with swim-out pools are on the first floor, but you couldn't see the ocean from them. I don’t think they were worth the extra cost.

During the first few days, people would save chairs as early as 6:00am, and that made it difficult to find a place to sit if you got there later in the day. However, later in the week, the resort started to enforce their policy of removing items from chairs that were unoccupied for 30 minutes or more. That was really nice, and you could get chairs at the pool or on the beach at any time. I hope they continue with this policy.

The lunch buffets were pretty good, and you could have burgers, steaks or fish grilled right in front of you. You can also get burgers, fries and some other items at the snack bar by the pools. This is where we ate most days. The dinner buffets were not as good as some of the resorts in the Riviera Maya, but the specialty restaurants were all very good. We went to the Oscars night theme buffet in the courtyard, which had lots of variety and was very good. I would not recommend the Spanish themed buffet unless you really like seafood. I do like all seafood, but it was even a bit much for me. I think only one or two items did not have any seafood in them. We had room service a few times, and it always arrived quickly. There is a fairly large menu, and you can get some type of food 24 hours a day.

There is usually live entertainment at the Sky Bar in the evening, and sometimes interactive entertainment such as the Mr. and Mrs. Secrets contests. Shows were held in the theater only some nights, and they weren't bad, but weren't great either.

We did a tour called “Three Levels of Huatulco”, which covers Santa Cruz, Santa Maria de Huatulco, and Pluma Hidalgo (elev. 4400 ft) were we visited the Orchid Lady and learned about (and tasted) the coffee grown in the area. Alberto Espana Chavez was our guide, and he is very knowledgeable of this area, and he loves to answer questions. I highly recommend this tour! See the Apple representative to get more information.

We also walked to La Bocana Beach for an authentic Zapoteca mud bath. One of the local women rub mud all over your body, let it dry in the sun and then vigorously rub it off! It really makes your skin feel soft! She also has bags of mud you can purchase and take home.

I highly recommend this resort, and would return again.

We spent from 26 Feb 2013 to 5 March 2013 at Secrets Huatulco. To start with, the views are excellent, with every room having an ocean view. The food was good to very good, we did not have a bad meal. The pool area and beach are good, although the umbrella's around the pool are not the best quality and do not stand up to the afternoon breezes. The staff takes them down during the heat of the afternoon when you most need them. Something more robust for shade would be nice. The ever present problem of people reserving loungers and then disappearing for hours is alive and well here. The staff addressed this during our stay, which was good, altough not well carried out. This is a beautiful hotel, but there seem to be some maintenance issues. The one elevator between the resteraunt and lobby level was out of order 50% of the time and the other elevators are looking pretty worn for a three year old resort. The hotel website will tell that you can get wireless in your room at an additional cost, but it is so bad in some parts of the resort that they offer it for no charge. They ask you to use the early checkout the night before departure, this was a waste of time. I had to return to the front desk in the morning to turn in my room keys and get my bus voucher. There was one staff member manning the desk and a long long lineup. These are all minor problems that are easily fixed. Overall we had a great time here and would return for sure.

If you want to have a nice quiet relaxing vacation this is the place. If you like to stay up late and meet new friends and enjoy some night life this is not the place. Not quite sure why, but this place made people go to bed early. I enjoyed the food here, you might have to wait for a table and then you might have to wait for a drink but you would always get served. It may take 2-3 hours if you have more than 4 at your table. Almost all the resturants the men had to wear pants and a shirt with sleeves. Even though some women wore their swimsuits and coverups to breakfast men had to cover their arms. No tank tops for the guys here. The first day we were there they ran out of beer. The second day they ran out of napkins and straws at the outside pools. The 3rd day they ran out of some food and the outside resturant. Almost every day they ran out of something. The elevators were another thing. If at the top and going all the way down it almost always stopped on every floor. We stayed in building 4 on the second floor, was able to get free wifi in our room and on our deck. Great view great room friendly workers. Great staff. A big language barrier, I speak no spanish and boy I wish I did because most of the workers could speak no english. The weather was great. Went to Santa Cruz 2 times to shop. Found good deals there. Went on the Sun and Sea 7 bays tour and had a great time. For around $50.00 we snorkeled, saw a whale and a stingray. The tour guides were great. This is something I recommend doing. Snorkeling at the resort on the far left of the beach was really nice. At the resort there is also alot of walking this place is BIG. If you have issues with steps then this is not a good place to go. Wish they had more games and entertainment around the pool. This place was a bit boring. Also, we were told we could get top shelf booze, well they might have it at one bar and then not at another. Also they would have one bottle aday and sometimes they hide it in the ice for the special guests. Some of our group actually went to town to buy the top shelf stuff that we were promised. That sucked. We already spent a big chunk of change for this trip. I guess we will have to choose better next time. We will not return.
