“Good to Potential Great”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

Most of the previous reviews on this site are fairly accurate about this resort. I am not going to discuss in detail the food as it is SO subjective but here are a few things that you might like to know based on our week here. We are fairly experienced travelers in our late 40's (for reference)

Travel Date: Feb 16-23

Resort is probably 90% Canadians and Americans - little Europeans
Weather - 7 days with NO CLOUDS - 33-37 degrees everyday
Best ocean views are bldg 1,2,3,4 - 3rd floor of each building
Preferred club not worth the money
When ocean is calm... easy to swim and nice and warm (we were fortunate to have calm waters)
Sand is hot
Pool Bar service is hit or miss - tipping didn't seem to speed them up
SPA- amazing views, hydrotherapy and couples massage was amazing and worth it
Gym equipment is new and ok if you feel the need - room gets very hot
Snorkeling on left side is ok.... will see some interesting fish
Best dinner restaurants - Cin Cin, Bordeaux, Spice
Worst Dinner restaurants - Castaways, Oceana (no one liked this place at resort)
Castaways for lunch - great views, alacarte menu but expect a 2 hour experience
Sky Bar - beautiful views, ran out of top shelp liquors every night and service not great
Desires - only open 3 hours late night and bartenders seem disinterested in being there
Pools - refreshing in morning and warm by afternoon - HUGE and clean - some tiles missing
Burgers at Beach grill - very good - make sure you ask for well done though
Reef Bar - only open 1 day we were there - too bad as it is a nice spot
Grounds - very clean and beautiful
Entertainment Team - friendly but not pushy and they try hard

Traveler Tips and Hotel Recommendations

Go to La Bocana Beach for mud bath - walkable - 20 min - turn right out of hotel - sidewalk
Sports - they show hockey games (time of year) in Desires in case you want to watch
JetSki tour of Bays - heard it is amazing tour - 6 hours - prebook
Bring your own mug for pool bar and floaties for the pool
Coco's - awesome latte's etc... and never busy
La Crucecita - La Crema for pizza, small market, Cabanya sports bar - large screen for hockey
Secrets - hire bartenders for Desires and Sky Bar that are personable and care
Secrets - maybe have some live music at Reef Bar - such a great setting and used very little
Bordeaux- great food but servers always grumpy - ate there 2x and same experience each time
Secrets - need a late night place to sit around and have drinks without techno music pounding
Secrets - lots of bad comments about the rock band at Sky Bar and I agree.. get rid of them

Overall this is a beautiful resort in a wonderful settting in Mexico. Much prefer this area to the Mayan Riviera and PV. The resort is unique in the way it is set-up and I think with a few tweeks in service at the bars and in a few restaurants they will have a long term winner. A solid 4 star but not quite a 5 star yet. But the negatives are not deal breakers or vacation ruiners.

Room Tip: buildngs 1&2 (floor 3) have the best ocean views

Just returned from the most enjoyable stay in Hautulco at the Secrets Resort. It was overall a fantastic experience, the staff was great and accommodating, it was super clean, excellent service, lots of great option for food, consistant hot weather everyday, easy access to the ocean, tons of pools and always found a lounge chair with no problem. Great entertainment, loved playing "Bango" (bingo at the swim up bar), beach volleyball, Aqua aerobics, yoga, a great gym with an amazing view. A $5 cab got you into town where there were great little markets and fantastic restaurants. Very clean and safe and was no problem go out on your own. It was so relaxing, I can't go back soon enough!

Room Tip: Loved the swim out rooms, very unique.

Just returned less than 24 hrs ago from Secrets Huatulco and LOVED it! Have stayed at many AI resorts (4 to 5 star) in Dom Rep., Cuba, Mayan Riviera, Pto. Vallarta and Secrets Huatulco is the best! other reviewers have commented on the hit and miss (read: super slow) service in the restaurants and the sometimes average food. Steaks were all pretty bad but we are from Alberta and you can't beat Alberta beef in my opinion. The Japanese and Mexican restaurants were the best for service and food. Castaways was great for an a la carte lunch (I dislike buffets) Surprisingly for a seaside resort, Ocean's, the seafood restaurant, was terrible. Unispired seafood dishes with horrible service (waiter kept forgetting about us...had to place our order twice and our dessert...never did show up after waiting half an hour!) Oh well, It's Mexico and it's all inclusive - what can I say. Last time I checked there were no All inclusive hotels listed in the Michelin restaurant guide!
The room: we treated ourselves to a one bedroom swim out suite and specifically asked for building 5 based on TripAdvisor reveiews. We were not disappointed. The swim out pool is warmer than the other pools and we did not have the hassle of waking up to discover that the best pool and beach chairs had been reserved by the 5am chair hogs as our swim out deck was equipped with two loungers for our exclusive use. Ordered room service breakfast every day and enjoyed breakfast on our patio in our bathrobes and slippers while the sun came up. Others have commented that Preferred Club is not worth the expense, but I would not hesitate to pay the extra again for a swim up room (automatically comes with the Preferred Club status). If someone from Secrets resorts reads this review, I would recommend reworking the Preferred Club Perks..i.e. better choices of wine at dinner at no extra charge, premium meal offerings in the a la carte restaurants, allowing Preferred Club guests to make reservations at the restaurants, including Castaways at lunch, or locating the Preferred Lounge a bit closer to the Preferred Suites Our suite was huge, bed comfortable and cleaning staff were marvelous....was glad to leave a generous tipevery day. No the cleaning staff do not speak English but remember - this is Mexico where Spanish, not English is the language! Waiters and most other hotel staff have a passable or better understanding of English.
Internet Wifi in the room was off and on. Got better wifi on our dick outside the room and it was super slow to load any web pages...seemed like dial-up internet almost. Cell phone coverage was excellent as we texted and phoned our two teenage sons back in Canada every day with no problems (tried to Skype but it did not work very well - internet issues)
We enjoyed spending most of our timed in our swim out pool or the quiet pool in front of building 5 as we discovered that the "activity pool" where the swim up bar was always had large groups of loud, obnoxious drunken 50 yr old men who were trying to re-live their frat-party days crowding it.
Tipping: Note to a few of those loud obnoxious pool bar guys - if you can afford to stay at Secrets and don't tip, you are a cheapskate! The staff all work really hard and we did not hesitate to tip everyone, from waiters, to bar staff, to room service and hospitality.
Gym was okay-worked out a couple of times but it got very hot late in the day and was quite crowded between 7 and 8:30am. Hubby played pool and beach volleyball most days and found that fun. Yes, sand on the beach gets scalding hot mid-day so take sandals to wear if you are planing to hang out at the beach between 11am and 3pm. Snorkeling at the far south end of the beach was pretty good. Lots of angel fish, blue parrot fish, chromis, urchins, sergeant majors and a few other that made me wish I'd brought my Fish ID card. All in all though, the resort, the weather, rooms and service were excellent!
Loved Secrets Huatulco so much we are already planning next years trip to Secrets in Jamaica

Just spent another week in paradise known as Secrets Huatulco. From the hostess that gave us our glass of champaign just off the van ride to the front desk clerk who checked us in to the bellhop who escorted us to our rooms, the trip was great from the beginning. Our room was clean and very comfortable with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and pools. The food was outstanding and our beach waiter, Ivan did a great job all week keeping us hydrated in the beautiful sunny beach. Towels were always available and the food was awesome. We have to been to several other Secrets Resorts and this one and Secrets Capri stand out for us. This was our second visit and will not be our last to this gorgeous area of Mexico. Friendly people are everywhere, from the airport security to the bus drivers and our Apple Rep and van driver. I would highly recoomend this hotel to anyone who wants to get away from the winter blahs! Casildo Martinez who is the GM did a great job of making us feel welcome and his staff is awesome.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the second or third floor to get the roof out of your line of sight.

In December of 2012 I made reservations for the week of Feb. 4 to Feb. 11, 2013 at the Secrets Huatulco. Upon arrival in Huatulco Tours failed to show up for our transfer and we were forced to take a taxi to the hotel.

Upon arrival at the hotel, they were very gracious when we told them about being stranded at the airport and arranged for a refund. We were then told that they had no room for us. They claimed that the computer malfunctioned and that they were overbooked. We were sent to the Dreams Hotel. The Dreams is a lovely property and they were very nice but we had wanted an all adults hotel. We went over to Secrets four times for dinner and it made it all the harder because this is one beautiful hotel.

My wife and 2 other couples just returned from a week at the Secrets resort in Huatulco. It was amazing. The view of the rooms was over the top. Even though it was sold out it never felt crowded. We NEVER ate breakfast anywhere but on our balcony. Wow was it great!!! The pools were just the right temperature with service for drinks always strolling by to take your order. I would have to say that it was the best resturants of any of the other all inclusives we have stayed at over the years. You have to go on a cruise to do better. It was not noisy and intense but so relaxing. It was such a great change.

The only negative was the beach directly in front was so course you would sink in several inches so it was difficult to walk on.

We went with the Apple tour out of St. Louis roundtrip direct. It's the way to go.

I know this may sound strange with all the bad informaiton we are getting about Mexico but it felt safe to be in Huatalco.

Stay here. You won't regret the experience.

Room Tip: Buildign 5 or 6 for the up close views.

A group of eight of us just returned from Secrets Huatulco. Everything has already been said about the positives, however there are a few negatives that Secrets needs to address.

First of all, the service at the a la carte restaurants, was hit and miss. It seemd a couple of the hosts/waiters, were a little on the rude side. Some service was great, while other times, it was agonizingly slow.

A big issue for our group was the drink situation. When you travel to a Secrets resort, there are certain things that you expect, like being able to have canned beer available or whatever your drink of choice is. My husband doesn't like draft, and it was very frustrating that it wasn't usually available. We had to talk to someone quite a few times to get Bud Light at the different bars. Problem was, once it arrived, it didn't last too long as everyone else also wanted it. We did have some issues getting Crown Royal, but closer to the end of the trip, it did seem to be more readily available. They were holding onto it like it was gold, and we felt if they could have gotten away with it, they wouldn't have made it available. We did go to the Dreams Resort one night for dinner, and they had canned beer and Crown Royal available no problem. If Secrets is the higher end resort, this seems very odd.

The resort has spectacular views, good food, fantastic wine (our favourite of any all inclusive) and you will enjoy your time here.

The weather was stunning and I don't think you can go wrong in this area.

There is not a huge night life, but we were usually ready for bed well before midnight anyhow. They had some good entertainment in the SkyBar most evenings, and that was enough for us.

As many have said, it's so not worth it for the jacuzzi preferred club rooms. Better views on the top two floors. If you like a swim out room, it may be worth the preferred club.
