“Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2014

About a week ago we had the fortune to take a trip to Hagia Sofia. We very much enjoyed the local breakfast, friendly staff, tour of the gardens complete with hundreds of butterflies, swim in the river and lunch. Armando's passion for his project is very evident and he is a wealth of knowledge. Highly recommended!

“Really interesting and fun”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 31, 2014

We are keen gardeners and being given a guided tour through the gardens and orchards of Hagia Sofia was a total treat for us. The staff were friendly and informative, the swim in the river was gorgeous and the lunch was yummy. We felt it was well worth doing.

“Giving back to the Earth”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2014

This was our third visit to this agri-ecological site. Our first visit to this charming location, situated in the foothills behind Huatulco, about an hours drive from Tangolunda Bay, was a couple of years ago. At that time, we met Armando, the charming owner. He acquired this 130 hectare property, with a river running through it, some 10 years ago. The first two years were spent in clearing some of the land, planting trees to replace some of the original ones which had previously been cut and putting in irrigation lines for his intended paradise. For the past seven or eight years, with the aid of his staff, he has been planting hundreds of varieties of beautiful flowers and fruit trees, both indigenous and brought in from other tropical regions of the world, This is a labour of love for Armando and he does not look upon it as a business venture. Having worked in industry for 34 years, he decided it was time to give something back to nature. Apart from creating a beautiful, peaceful, ecological paradise with flowers, fruit trees, flowers, butterflies and birds he wants to help the poor farmers in the surrounding area to improve their lot in life by growing a variety of fruits for sale, instead of just growing maize for their own consumption.

There is a small waterfall on his property and it is a delight to swim in the river below the cataract. Armando encourages visitors to swim upstream and enter a small cave behind the waterfall. The first time we visited, it was in early spring and I had no difficulty in doing so. Our second visit was last November, when I swam strongly upstream but remained in the same spot. I found it impossible to swim against the current to enter the cave. On this occasion, in early January, with the force of the cascading water being somewhat less (and with the help of a rope tied above the rocks) I was able to achieve this objective together with my 11 year old grand-daughter and my son-in-law. My 9 year old grand-daughter made it to the base of the waterfall, but was too intimidated by the force of the water to try to enter the cave. My 6 year old grand-son and my daughter decided to swim in calmer waters lower down-stream.

Armando provides a wonderful opportunity for visitors to visit this exceptional site for a full day at a very reasonable price which includes transport to and from the site, a guided tour as well as an excellent freshly cooked breakfast and lunch.
