“Place to relax”
Reviewed February 5, 2012

Stayed there and really enjoyed it. Hotel is a bit old but has been upkept. Rooms do need an upgrade. If are the type that likes activities in the pool and need to be entretained 24/7 with loud music this is not the place. We did enjoy the silence that allowed us to relax. The beach is virtually private for hotel guests. On the down side food at the restaurants is not very good, specially at Deep Blue. I recommed that you take a 5 min taxi to down town and have dinner at any of the restaurants which are good at a fraction of the cost.

Returning to the Camino is like going home. This is our sixth stay and we plan, good Lord be willing, to return. The location is peaceful and the staff are like family. January is a great time for the holiday crunch is over and it's not crowded at all. Our room was recently remodeled with new bedding and a clean crisp look. The grounds are pristine and the beach is book end by rock cliffs which make it very intimate. there are beach vendors but they respect your privacy and once you say "no gracias" they go on their way. In fact over the years we've become good friends with some of them along with the staff of the Camino. Ms. Yvonne Kraak, the Managing Director, is a incredible person who reaches out to every guest to help them with their request. Alejandra Salas is the room division manager and she also is a great liaison for other request. This is not an all-inclusive property but the three restaurants serve a great cuisine.
For a taste of small town Mexican life, there is La Crucecita (10 minutes from the Camino), which serves as a support community for the area and has a more genuine Mexican atmosphere. It has many restaurants and shops built around a typical Mexican zócalo (town square) - the focal point of the community enjoyed by residents and tourists alike. Yes there are jewelry stores also and I can attest to that.
A safe area for touring so go and enjoy.

Room Tip: Splash pool......................worth it after the beach.

Our king room with private plunge pool was lovely. Nice big marble bath with 2 sinks and a lighted makeup mirror, closet with safe, covered terrace with table and chairs and beautiful plunge pool. The beach service, palapas, loungers and towels were very nice. Beautiful pool too. Breakfast at the beach restaurant and lunch, snacks and happy hours at the beach bar were excellent. Had one of the best massages ever at the open air spa as well. Overall a fantastic place to stay with nice service and a perfect climate. Checkout was the only slowdown, so provide yourself time in case, as was our experience, the party ahead of us was extremely picky and slow to peruse and discuss bill with staff. Easy access to town and excursions with taxi or car service available.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor which gave quick access to all areas of the resort. After reading some re...

My life partner and I enjoyed our second stay at Zaashili January 1 to January 8. While I agree with some reviewers comments regarding management inattention and the property becomming a little long-in-the-tooth, we enjoy the hotel very much and its more laid-back attitude. For reference, I'm a bit over 50 and my partner a bit under. If you desire something less than a Type-A vacation, meaning a day of snorkeling the coves mixed in with a day of reading on the beach, I highly recommend the resort. Only menorable negatives were (i) jellyfish bloom (which, for the most part, kept my partner out of the ocean) and (ii)management's inability for the first three or four days to stock the minibar and insure we had bottled water in our room.

Here's an important note and recommendation: for those who are first-timers, you may be suspicious of the (mostly) men who approach you on the beach selling excursions - deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, four wheeling, etc. We have been very fortunate to meet a young man named Crisanto and taken several excursions - fishing, snorkeling and a trip to Las Brisas waterfalls (see attached picture) - with him and his partner Enrique (I hope I have the spelling correct). Crisanto is a great guy - an excellent, doting guide and very knowledgable about the flora/fawna and village life. There are no language difficulties and he will do virtually anything to make your experience unique and memorable - including donning mask, snorkel and fins and catching sea-going exotica to show you or crawling through a hole in the falls and taking your picture (see attached). His central passion is fishing, so if you're thinking of a deep-sea fishing excursion, search him out! His picture is attached as well.

As I always do to prepared for a trip, I read reviews and searched all resort information before booking this property. I should have been somewhat suspicious at having to pay in-full 30 days prior to arrival. Five days before departure I emailed contacts at the property that before paying in full had been prompt in answering emails but this time they were never answered. Having been told we would have a hide-a-way in the living area there was only a couch with no linens anywhere to be found. The kitchen had nothing!! Not a spoon, nor a cup, nor a fork!! Nothing!! No microwave! No coffee maker!! All calls to housekeeping and room service where ignored until the third of fourth call and only then after asking to speak to a manager. A request for extra towels was answered with "why do you need those"? It seemed to me that the property management was the driver in the poor service attitudes. Needless to say, if it had not been for prepayment I would have been exiting the scene for better attitudes if not better accommodations.

Now, on the positive side, the bar and food service at the pool and beach was excellent! The pool was very nice, and the beach / pool areas very clean. By 2 PM everyday there were no more towels at the pool area and non arrived. Upon check-out give yourself a couple hours, the process was extremely slow and you must have a "check-out pass" before you can leave the property.

Room Tip: Ask for Northwest rooms, closer to beach and lots less hill climbing.

I've been wanting to stay at this hotel for a long time, I heard such great things from other family members. The hotel is unique in its architecture which adds to the charm of staying here. However, after a closer look you can start to see where the hotel has not been kept up. The bathroom was a bit frayed around the edges, with paint on the door peeling and worn, dirty-looking tiles in the shower. The part that needs the most work is the gym and tennis court, those have not been kept up at all. The gym is up a hill and good luck finding it after the sun goes down. Once you get there you'll come across broken equipment, a dirty plunge pool, and dirty facilities. That was the worst part of my stay.

The rest of it is o.k. with service being average. We went during off-season and still didn't get great service at the pool or beach. In fact, often the staff seemed somewhat annoyed that we were bothering them. The front-desk staff was great at check-in and check-out and helping us coordinate our flight out, but the pool and bar staff seemed visibly unhappy with their jobs. We had to hunt down a waiter to get our order at the pool and he was not attentive after that. The best part of our trip was the relaxing massage and facial we had at their spa (a cabaña by the beach), now that was the best service we had throughout our entire stay. The other highlight was the plunge pool. Definitely bigger than we expected. We ate at the restaurant, which was nothing spectacular and also had a drink at the bar (again average service).

On the last day we were surprised to see a big (three inches across) spider sneak into our room. While we were not squeamish and were able to shoo it back out of our room, it did make us wonder why they don't try to close the gap between the entrance door and the floor to ensure little critters stay out. After seeing the size of that thing, I sure wouldn't want to find it in my towel or clothes.

Yes, this is a really lovely hotel, but not as great as it once was. With other more affordable and pleasant options they should really try to stay competitive. But when I was there it felt like they were happy staying at the status quo.

This resort is extremely relaxing. Grounds are beautiful and the pool is large. Even though the resort was full, the pool area never felt crowded. The staff beach side were very accommodating-many didn't speak English very well, but we managed to communicate. There were very few Americans, which we loved. Our room was spacious and comfortable and the view was great. Our daughter is 3 and too young for Kids Club, but the staff definitely encouraged her participation of the games at the pool.

Some recommendations: 1. They need a concierge staff or someone familiar with the restaurants in the area. We were there 7 nights and basically figured everything out about the area on our own. It would have been nice to have information on the other beaches, shopping and restaurants. 2. They need a kids menu at the pool. And, they need to expand the selection of sandwiches at the pool. 3. They need more accessible coffee service early morning. Americans get up early and like coffee early in the morning. 4. They need to be more forthcoming about the beach. The red flag was up all week and we could only get in the water
once. I believe the water in the area is a bit rough all the time.

Overall, we had a wonderful experience. I wanted to get away and I felt like I did. All of the staff was service oriented. We rented a car and went out for breakfast and dinner, so I can't speak to the restaurants.
