“Good but not great.”
Reviewed March 27, 2012

My fiance and I stayed here along with my parents for a week(March 3-9). Overall, our experience was very good. The air conditioner did break down for our last 2 days but the room stayed cool enough. This seemed to be a pretty common thing around the hotel and it was one of my recommendations on the survey. The rooms were very clean although, some days took longer than others to get the room made up but it was visible that the hotel was under-staffed and everyone there was working harder to make our stay enjoyable which it was. The food wasn't the best and we ate at the beach club most of the time because it had the most variety. We didn't get to try the A La Carte Restaurant though because it's only open Friday and Saturdays and we seemed to miss the cut-off time for reservations but we heard great things about it. If you are going to eat dinner at the beach club, I would recommend the mexican-themed dinner. That was the best for me. There are great places to eat around. One just across the street called, Alebrijes. It's a BBQ place with really large portions and the staff totally takes care of you. The gym is really outdated, so I wouldn't expect to get in a good workout but you're on vacation! Walking up and down the hill is enough!

The staff is what really makes this place. They go out of their way to make it nice for you. I don't think I would stay there again given the choice but I would consider it. There are so many options and beautiful places to stay in Huatulco, that I would definitely rent a house for my next visit. You can stay here and have a great vacation, just don't come with high expectations.

Room Tip: Stay on floors 7-10.

Pat and I just returned from Huatulco, Mexican paradise, where we missed the earthquake by 21 minutes. We took off at 11:45 and it hit at 12:06.
We highly recommend Huatulco to all of you, but DO NOT GO TO THE CROWNE PACIFIC. IT IS A DISASTER. While there, they ran out of red and white wine, beer, vodka, tonic, burgers, bath mats, bath towels, couldn't get our toilet un plugged because they did not speak English. I feel very badly for some of the very kind workers who tried to serve us as best they could but bad managment has destroyed the place. Every tourist we befriended there said they would never rreturn. Please pass this on.

This is the first time staying at the Crown Pacific (Feb 21-Mar 6). After reading reviews prior to our departure to Huatulco I was a little scared what to expect from this hotel, but decided to go with an open mind as I knew that it was not classed as a 5 star hotel. From the moment we arrived at our hotel until the day we departed, the staff was exceptional. Yes, there were a few problems with the front desk in regards to us not speaking much Spanish and them very limited English, but usually everything did get worked out just fine through sign language. I found speaking over the phone did not work well, but to actually go to the front desk in person.

The rooms are showing their age and could use a little renovating, but they were exceptionally clean. Our maids always left us a nice decoration either with a flower or just artistically left some sort of a design on our bed. We were in the 10th building which is quite a hike if you decide to walk it, hence it has been called the "buns of steel" level. We did find that we did not have to ever wait for a car to drive us to any level. The terrace was huge and we spent every morning and night outside enjoying the fresh air. The view from here was incredible! I would not recommend this level to anyone with any walking disabilities.

We spent most of our time at the pool on the 7th level. We found that it was very quiet and relaxing and Marciano our bartender was excellent. A lot of the days this pool was like having your own private pool. We also preferred to have our breakfast also on this level at the Cielito Lindo. Pedro was the captain here and spoke very good English and always offered us an omelette with peppers, onions, ham, spinach and cheese. Occasionally bacon would be available. Pedro has since left so I am not sure how the communication will be as most of the other waiters spoke very limited English, but tried very hard.

After two weeks, the food down at the main restaurants did get quite boring as it was always the same, but we did venture out and ate at other local restaurants. The nightly entertainment we found very entertaining with the comedy nite being our favorite. The animation staff were exceptional, and who we could not help but love and make new friendships with.

We did attend the A la Carte, which was one meal that was to die for! Both hubby and I found this was the best meal we had in all of Huatulco and would recommend everyone attend at least one night. The A la Carte is only open Friday and Saturday nights and you must call or go down to the front desk at 9 am the day you wish to book, to hopefully get into one.

All in all, we would return to the Crown Pacific again. We hope everyone remembers to tip the animation staff, waiters, drivers and anyone else who has gone out of their way to help you, as they put many long hours and days in. The staff is what makes this hotel so appealing to us. Their dedication, smiles and willingness to do anything for you is what makes the Crown Pacific!

Room Tip: The 10th level 3rd floor has the best views!

This hotel has significant problems for Canadian holidayers. Most of the staff have little or no English, and the food this year seemed to all be cooked to Mexican taste (spicy sauces), and it was not very good, over cooked or undercooked, and they're using some kind of potato that stays hard as a rock no matter how long you cook it. They also ran out of bacon three different mornings at breakfast, and the "scrambled" eggs are sort of a chopped up omelette.
I know they have renovated some of the bathrooms, but those which are unrenovated are pretty ugly. Bathtubs chipped and peeling, sinks stained, grout and caulking a total mess. The place is clean, it will just never look clean until these things are fixed.
HOWEVER, if you can overlook those problems, it's a great place to stay. Most of the staff is friendly and willing to be helpful - if they can figure out what you are asking. They often pretend (or maybe even think) they understand what you are asking, which can lead to some pretty aggravating or hilarious results. The rooms are generally spacious and have very large balconies for sitting outside. The views are unparalelled. The two pools means that the games and more loud activities can be carried out at the beach pool while the 7th floor pool is for a more quiet bunch generally. Several good restaurants within walking distance and its quite safe to walk, even after dark. 38 pesos gets you a cab ride into either Sta Cruz or La Crucecita where there are more restaurants and lots of shopping. Just try not to go on days the cruise ships dock or you pay more. There are also many interesting places nearby for trips and tours.
This was my third time there and I think I would go back, depending on the food situation, as it has deteriorated since my first visit to the point that it was either go out to eat or starve most nights. Steam tables and buffets take a specal kind of cooking talent that is totally absent there right now.

Room Tip: Eighth floor is my favourite, though 6 isn't bad. Some of the rooms on 10 face the mountain rat...

If, like us, you were suckered into a Royal Holiday membership at some time in the past, this is a great place to use your points! (if you're not a member, stay that way at all costs- avoid any presentations like the plague) The majority of the guests are not members at this time and some said the service has deteriorated from their previous visits. However, other than communication problems since we don't speak Spanish and few of the hotel staff speak English, our service was great. The rooms are pretty typical for Mexico. Ours was clean but the bathroom had that unfinished look that seems to be par for the course in Mexico- anyone ever heard of caulking? we were in a Master Suite on the 9th level and had a nice view. Most of the Canadians were on the 10th level - I believe 9th and 10th levels are all master suites. As mentioned by everyone, the ability to walk is handy as the rooms are not handicap accessible. The food was OK (but avoid Oriental night if you can- it was on Sunday when we were there and we were too tired to go elsewhere). We really enjoyed breakfast at the Ceilito LInda restaurant on the 7th level. The beach restaurant has a slightly wider variety of foods for breakfast ( more international stuff) but the Ceilito LInda is much more elegant etc.

The resort was maybe 25% full, probably less. Their beach is very small but we had no problem getting a palapa seat since there were rarely more than 2 other couples out there. if it ever gets crowded it migth be ugly. But it was nice compared to the crowds at the other resorts next door.

Price wise I think you get what you paid for but if you have enough advanced notice you can probably get a nicer resort at a similar price through a travel agent package. Yes, people are still using travel agents and getting good deals! But for a relaxed vacation it's not bad.

Room Tip: master suites on 9th and 10th levels, junior suites on 7& 8. don't go lower.

This was my husband's and my fourth visit to the Crown (Jan 31 - Feb 7) and again, we had a great time. We asked for a room on the 6th level so that we could be near the pool. The view from the big balcony is lovely and it's very quiet at night. At mid week, the 7th floor pool was practically empty, lovely and quiet. There were fewer Canadians staying and only a couple of Americans. We were there for a holiday weekend and the resort filled up with Mexican families. The resort had trouble dealing with this influx and ran out of food at breakfast as well as bottled water and towels. However, it is the staff that makes the Crown a terrific place to stay. From the animation staff, who we have come to love, the cart driver giving us Spanish lessons to the wait staff, they work so hard to make our stay pleasant. We hope everyone will tip them well, as they deserve it. With the new management came a few changes. I was disappointed that the computer in the lobby was gone. They manager told me it was just tough luck for me. Bad attitude. Also, they ran out of red wine at dinner a couple of times. Some of the lounges could be upgraded, too. Just small points but things that could be better. The smallness of this resort makes it a very friendly place and we really enjoyed the company of the folks from Saskatchewan and the US. While there isn't a huge choice of food, we always enjoyed dinner and the whole trip was so inexpensive there was money left over for dinner in town. The Crown is great value for the money.

This was our second visit to the Crown and we were delighted once again.

We started out on the tenth floor, great views but the air conditioner was not working and we were told that it might not get fixed for a bit....so we went to the 8th floor and what a GEM of a room!! Top floor of the building (the 8 building has 3 floors with 3 rooms on each floor) at the far end....a great balcony and fab room, and the air was working! Matress a little hard but that is always the case....brought our own pillows.

The staff was excellent, no issues at all

Love the seventh floor pool area....spent many an afternoon there after our long morning walks. Only issue is that they allow people to drink in the pool...so you can imagine the nasty dirty straws, straw wrappers, glasses...and spillage by the end of the day. Thank goodness for chlorine. The pool cleaning is something the hotel needs to deal with. An adult only pool would be nice.

Food was not too bad.....great salad selection but the protein was...well....just ok but not great if you are watching your cholesterol!! Chicken was always chicken legs...and some was greatly undercooked...lots of pork, but very tough, and beef...don't eat the beef unless it has been stewed as it is impossible to cut. Breakfast was awesome but the coffee....bla....

We were a little worried about the time share aspect of the hotel but we were thrilled that we were not approached even once! We did notice however thatt the time share customers did seem to get more attention service wise....there were a few nights where we did not get any service at our table....the time share folks have different coloured wrist bands.

Overall a good visit.....but honestly we loved the location of Castillo, where we stayed last year, as it is so much more to our liking....so we would return only if the price was great...love those big rooms and great balconies!

Just walking up and down from our room was GREAT..only took the shuttle once when we arrived.....super exercise!!..FYI, it's about 750 metres from section 8 to the beach club....and that adds up!!
