My spouse and I just returned from Dreams (Jan 31-Feb 7) and had a wonderful time!!
I had read a lot of great reviews before going so I had high hopes. This was our first time in Huatulco and we will definitely be back. Stepping off the plane to arrival in our room was the quickest we have experienced thus far....big difference from other areas in Mexico.
This was also the first time that we received the room that we actually requested...(therefore not wasting our limited vacation time on switching rooms lol).
Dreams is a good size...everything is nearby...beach and pool access all easily accessible.
Staff are great!! Every staff that we passed always greeted us and smiled. I agree with another review that I read on how hard the staff work and that they should be treated with respect - not rudely as I witnessed from some guests.
You can get great specialty coffees in Cocoa lounge area.
The food was very good...no complaints...lots to pick from. We only tried 3 of the restaurants as we did other things off the resort. The Mexican, Italian and Seaside Grill...all very good.
My only negative thing about the restaurants would be that they are not all open every night....as we had wanted to try the Seafood one but it wasn't open the night we wanted....next time we will stay 2 weeks :)
We had a romantic dinner one night at the Gazebo looking out to the ocean...it was a very romantic setting.
Our room overlooked the Adult only pool...quite area. Bed was very comfortable. Room was kept clean and our fridge was always stocked with beer/water/pop.
We went into La Crucesita one afternoon...It was a good size...had more restaurants and shops then I was expecting. Love that there are no chain outlets there. Would have liked to go back at night time...next time. Under $5 cab ride there. Felt very safe.
We also went into Santa Cruz for an afternoon...just to hang out on the beach at one of the restaurants.
We went on 2 excursions with Air Transat...the Coffee Plantation one was excellent. We will drink our coffee with a greater appreciation after experiencing this tour. Our tour guide Oscar "The History Man" was terrific...very knowledgeable....we learned a lot. This is a full day...way up in the mountains....so the drive is very curvy...especially the last 20 kms up there....I was grateful that Oscar had some Dramamine for the drive home :) They also stop in a town...where we visited their City Hall, a Church and walked around the market.
2nd excursion we did was the Sunset Cruise...very nice to get out on the water...see a better sunset....which you can't see from the hotel due to their location. We spotted some dolphins and a sea turtle. Luckily Oscar was our tour guide again.
Note: re Air Transat....heads up to check if the plane you will be on has entertainment...ours did not - luckily our travel agent advised us beforehand...or it would have been a very long flight from Victoria. Their recent commercials on TV had mislead some of the people our our trip.
Before our trip we were trying to decide between Dreams and Secrets...so we had the opportunity to visit Secrets to check it out. I was glad we had picked Dreams...but also wouldn't mind checking out Secrets next time. Dreams is more lively...because you have couples and families...and a big wedding destination spot it seemed. Secrets is newer, very quiet at our quick visit there...the spa area has an amazing view due to being higher up.
I did visit the spa in Dreams for a massage and a hydro path session is also included....it was excellent...felt very special.
One last issue that I have but it's more to do with people than the resort. The "chair game"...absolutely brutal that people get up before 6am (probably leave towels out before they go to bed) to reserve spots...and usually the same spots everyday...come on people mix it up! Be more courteous towards others. The resort does have a 30min policy but I think it's hard for them to enforce...so we took matters into our own hands :) You don't reserve one of the best areas in the resort and then go on an excursion...don't care if it went longer then you thought...just plain rude. Anyways the one day when we did want to sit by the pool near the beach all we had to do was ask the staff and they brought us out an umbrella and chairs...so that solved the issue...and luckily we like to do other things during our holidays...so this wasn't an issue for us...because I don't think getting up before 6am on holidays to secure a chair is very relaxing...and the more everyone does it the earlier it will get.
We will definitely return to Huatulco...loved that it is less commercialized and more authentic Mexican. Oh ya...almost forgot the weather is AMAZING...it was perfect everyday....don't believe the weather network...before we had gone it was forecasting rain/cloud for several days...it was sunny everyday!!!
