We booked a last minute vacation here for our MB spring break. We booked with Sunwing and was I ever impressed with them. We left our departure city early as everyone had checked in and we arrived at our destination city one hour early! I have never had that happen EVER! Sunwing provided the best service I have ever had on an all-inclusive vacation. They provided champagne, free wine, a delicious meal, warm towels, free pop/juice/coffee and entertainment on their fold down TVs. I couldn't have asked for more there. (5 stars for sunwing...will definitely book with them again!) Customs and immigration at the airport in Huatulco was a breeze...quick and painless. The buses were waiting for us and we barely had time to grab a bathroom break and a cervesa and we were off to the resort. (a mere 30 min bus ride) The check in process again was very easy...instead of waiting in long lines at the front desk, the hotel set up tables in another area where everything was pre-assigned and ready for you. A cold non-alcoholic beverage (orange and mango, I think) was waiting for us when we arrived.
We signed up and went to our rooms...what a surprise! I read that they were quite dated and you should ask for a higher floor...well, our rooms were perfect...second floor overlooking the pools and an ocean view. One quick flight of stairs and the beach chairs are right there...turn left and there is the pool. Small resorts are beneficial this way. The verandas were lovely with an area to hang dry swim clothes, a table and two chairs. The rooms were not big or modern but they were more than sufficient for us...and VERY clean!! Please leave a tip on your pillow daily as they really appreciate it! The mini bar was suffiently stocked daily with whatever I asked for in my poorly translated to Spanish note and a 50 peso tip.
I approached the front desk about upgrading to premium on the first evening we were there. I did not wish to upgrade my room because I was more than happy with it. I wanted to have access to the premium lounge, premium beverages and free room service. I was not happy with my front desk clerk Eric...he cannot be trusted. I did not feel it was fair to charge $45 per night when I am the only adult in my room. It seemed only reasonable to charge me $30 per night for the upgrade. After telling him what my budget was and asking if I could possibly have it for that price, begrudgingly, he agreed. Ultimately when I got my Mastercard bill, he charged me $30 more than he said he would! Check your statement BEFORE you give him a cash tip! My own stupidity...I own it! I should have checked the conversion factor before agreeing! I am glad that I upgraded though...the kids enjoyed the games room and we did use the room service. Javier in the Premium lounge was always eager to please. My critisism here is that I paid for this service per person yet one night when I was sick in my room the kids were asked to leave the premium lounge because an adult was not with them! I was not happy because I paid for them to use it fair and square! They were simply sitting in the lounge playing cards with some friends. My friend who was not premium asked if she could stay with them in my place since I was sick but they said no. Not the end of the world but they should re-think charging premium prices for the kids if this is their policy.
The food at the Barcelo was good...some days much better than others. We did not do the a la cartes because we had the kids to think about. We decided to eat in La Crucecita on the 6th night because the food was starting to get repetitive. The drinks were just okay...they are a bit understaffed so they do not mix their blended drinks enough. There were always big chunks of ice in my pina coladas. Also, they use the mixes instead of the genuine ingredients which is not as good.
The activities that the resort offers are quite sufficient. They have 3 tennis courts which we utilized regularly and had a ball! tee hee. They had catamarans, kayaks, boogie boards, ping pong, pool sports, beach volleyball...more than enough to keep everyone occupied.
One last little diddy...I would recommend taking Dukoral before visiting this resort. Myself and about every other person I talked to had a similar stomach issue the week of our stay. I have been to Mexican all inclusive resorts 10 times and I have never had this happen. Lesson learned! Never go without preparing for this EVER again.
We booked last minute so we got a really good deal! If I had paid full price I would not have been as pleased with the Barcelo. If I were to book in advance, I would pay the extra few hundred bucks and book with the Dreams next door. If the same deal came up for this place again and the timing was right, I would probably return. The weather in Huatulco is spectacular and if you like it hot, you must visit here! It is very safe and the staff are very good. Overall we did enjoy ourselves and we met a lot of really nice people.
