“Good setup for Kids, No kingbeds for couples.”
Reviewed March 19, 2014 via mobile

This is my second time to huatulco, my first time staying at the Barcelo. My first stay was at Dreams next door. My review compares the two a lot if you are trying to choose.

If you are trying to choose:
KIDS: I don't have any, but I would have to say that kids will have more fun at the Barcelo. Hands down. They won't notice the ugly tile and aging building. They will notice the awesome kids pool with 3 slides and the trampoline and the jungle gym. Which Dreams does NOT have.
COUPLES: Good luck getting a King bed at the barcelo. You will have to choose between snuggling on one of the doubles pushed together or each sleeping on one. I had requested king, was given two doubles and after speaking to other visitors it seems there was at least half a dozen couples in the same situation. Tried to switch to a King room 3 times with no luck.

Food: Barcelo and Dreams food are at par with each other IMO. Both have mediocre buffets. A la cartes at barcelo were good, with the exception of the Mexican restaurant...don't bother with that one we didn't like it and we didn't hear a single good thing from any of the other guests.

Beds: Comfortable (firmer) beds with good pillows. Just don't expect a king bed.

Rooms: showing their age. Ugly pink tiles. Lights buzz in the bathroom. Toilet handle loose and rusty, takes forever to flush. But maids did a good job at keeping it clean. Dreams has the nicer rooms.

Pools: 1 adult pool with swim up bar. 1 kids pool divided in two parts one more shallow than the other. Better pools for kids for sure. No infinity pools like Dreams has.

Bars/drinks: I don't drink often, I did find that they were missing some of my preferred mixes, but I made other selections and the drinks were decent. They were pretty good about not being stingy with the booze.

Staff: All were very polite. In some areas I did get the impression they were understaffed sometimes at food rush times sometimes at the bar.

Could use more umbrellas on the beach, but you could usually find a chair in the full sun somewhere. The beach is nice. Sand is very coarse and gets very hot. The ocean is very warm. Like bath water almost. It's great. Huatulco is a smaller town than say pto Vallarta or playa del Carmen and feels more authentic. You will not find a big chain restaurant here. Weather is 30 degrees Celsius every day. It's the same day every day just about.

We paid just under $1100 a person from edmonton and I was very happy with the resort for that price.

Had a wonderful holiday at the Barcelo. Sunwing was an awesome host. They put on a going away barbque that was excellant.we upgraded out room to balcony ocean view and it was beautiful. Everything was clean, maids wedre excellant and when we had a problem with the toilet it was repaired immediately. The tours were awesome as well and we had great tour guides. I am definately going to go back. My experience was definately a good one.

Room Tip: higher floors have better view

As everyone comments, this hotel needs room updates. However, it is extremely well-kept and clean. Apple has it rated as a 5-red-apple, and I think this is best of the 5 reds. The food is fantastic. The breakfast and lunch buffets have so many selections, very tasty. In the evening the buffet restaurant has a different theme every night. so even if you skip the specialty restaurants, you will not be disappointed. The steak & seafood restaurant has a great setting down by the beach. Those in our group who ordered steak said it wasn't great - but the seafood was very good.
The beach needs more palapas and umbrellas - sun here is very intense. The resort was full, so the saving of chairs was a pain. Rude people save chairs under the palapas before 7am and never use them... :-(
All in all, I think the Barcelo delivers and you get a good value for what you pay.

Room Tip: 5th and 6th floor. We had room 503 - awesome straight on view over the pool area and ocean

WARNING- This is long- but if you have never been here- I hope it will serve as a guide and provide helpful info. We traveled on March 8th-15th. Purchased through Apple Vacations. Frontier Airlines out of Chicago O'hare. We purchased the Premium level all inclusive.

Different airlines decide to charge or not to charge for different items: snacks, drinks etc. We had never flown Frontier before, so didn't realize that they didn't serve some sort of meal on the 4.5 hour flight as other airlines we have flown in the past have done. They had snack boxes, which were o.k. However, we should have thought ahead and we should have purchased a sandwich before we flew out in the morning. The menu says you have to pay for soft drinks, but they did not charge for the one glass that we received. So, you might consider purchasing refreshments before you leave the airport as well. There was an understandable explanation which was that they turn the plane around quickly and do not restock while in Mexico, so they have to have enough for that flight to make it back. There was not a problem with the liquor and was plenty for purchase- which is normal on most carriers.

Due to weather delay, we were 3 hours late in landing plus an hour to get through customs, luggage, wait on transportation to leave and drive to hotel. The ride from the airport was about 30 minutes. They are building a new road, so there are parts of the drive that are on the new road, old road and dirt road and whoever gets there first one lane road- seriously. So don't be alarmed, the drivers have it down to a science and it was a pleasant drive.

Once we arrived at the hotel, because we had purchased the premium package, we had a special (short) line for check-in. Remember to bring your itinerary. Something with technology that we don't always remember to print and bring. In our rush to leave the house in the morning, I left mine sitting on the counter. The gentleman who started to check us in didn't really like that we had forgotten it and almost insisted on it. So recognize that it was my error, but let's be realistic on the check in process- which is each guest has a pre-made check in envelope and they are in alpha order. Once past that, we made it to our room- on the first floor, in a corner and by a noisy exit. Our Premium Ocean View Room that we paid for was a view of the back of lounge chairs on the first floor. So- please note, from what we could tell, all of the rooms were Ocean View, so really the benefit of the Premium upgrade are all of the other benefits- wi-fi, liquor, room service etc. You could tell that the room was older and was very run down. We went back to the front desk to see if there were any other premium rooms left, and the same gentleman told us no and that he would have to check with his manager to see if there was anything available Sunday or Monday. This was the only individual that was not very helpful.

Sunday morning we went back to the front desk and spoke to a wonderful lady who found us a great room on the 6th floor, great views, updated with a great shower etc. It would be a great feature if they are upgrading all of their rooms a bit at a time.

Tips about the room. I don't know if all rooms have DVD players or just Premium- but remember they are not blu-ray. Shower was great, but there is no ledge to keep the water from going all over the floor, we just didn't turn the shower on full blast and it worked out great. Lucrecia was the wonderful lady who took care of our room everyday. Make sure your door shuts. Our mattress had a dip in it, so not the most comfortable sleep each night, but the free upgraded liquor helped with that:)

Resort- Incredibly clean, a little dated. At the pool each morning, we watched the interesting "saving of the chairs". We would put towels on our chairs and drop our things off while we left for 30 minutes to eat. However, we did watch for several days, others who had chairs "saved" from 8-2 and never showed up. Please be kind to other travelers, if you are not going to use them, leave them for someone else. For those of us/you who do not have children and are concerned that this is not an adult only resort, the resort has a perfect pool setup to please families and non families. Even though the child pool and adult pool are close to each other, noise was never an issue and was enjoyable for everyone. We never made it to any of the specialty restaurants, but the buffet did have a wide variety of options as did the room service. We can be picky eaters (we don't eat seafood), and we never had a hard time finding things that made a great meal. We used the Premium club and our liquor upgrade frequently. Celso B. made our drinks each night, was incredibly friendly and a great host while we were in the Premium Lounge.

Just for fun shopping, we actually had better luck in Santa Cruz than we did in La Crucita (spelling). Either one- 15 minute taxi about $5. Keep in mind that this is not going to be the same type of shopping that you find in port cities like Playa and Cancun. There are a few shops across the street from the resort. A very unique shop that supports a great non profit organization across the street and to the left about a block from the resort- Bacaanda Foundation. We bought a few art items from there- all local materials and artists. Art as in two beautiful hand panted pumpkins that were made out of gourds. They have a Noahs arc that was made by their students that is amazing.

Random notes- The resort ONLY takes credit cards and pesos, which is fine, we just didn't realize it and had dollars and credit. After we checked out, we wanted to exchange some money so that we could tip for luggage, drivers etc. They wouldn't do the exchange because we had checked out- 5 minutes prior.

If you do the premium upgrade, make sure that you know all of the items that you have access to. We did a massage and we received 10% off. When I got home and looked at the paperwork that they gave me, we were supposed to get 20% off. Again, not an issue, but not every employee may know all of the details so help them along if need be.

Beach was beautiful, clean etc. If you are used to the waters of the Caribbean, this is not the crystal blue water, but still beautiful.

Weather was sunny every day, little humid. Huatulco is a smaller, beautiful tourist destination with very friendly locals. it is not full blown crazy busy with high end shops, chain restaurants etc. Don't pass up if you are looking for a very relaxing vacation. However, if you are looking for excursions- those are available also.

Coming home- bus left the resort at 10 even though our flight was at 1:35. You cannot go through customs until 2 hour before your flight, so after checking in, we waited outside at the little bar/food place for and hour until they let us in to go through customs and security.

Long review, but hopefully helpful hints and tips.

Room Tip: Because of resort setup- request a higher floor. Rating room 609 as a 4 but room 135 as a 1.

I have traveled quite a bit and can handle bumps here and there but our experience at this hotel was awful. Short staffed, power outages, toilet back ups, shower water scorching hot or freezing cold (no happy medium), food was awful we purchased the all inclusive and ate dinner off the resort 4 nights of 7. The breakfast was okay, but the lunch buffet and reservation restaurants were awful. They had 2 bartenders at the pool bar and those poor guys were so busy. Same thing at the lobby bar at night. The staff at the bars were very friendly, just stretched beyond their capacity. I really felt sorry for them. Our maid service was good and our rooms were cleaned each day. Front desk ran out of pesos and were not able to exchange money for us on 3 seperate occasions. The rooms lost power 2 nights in a row while getting ready for dinner. The bathroom toilet did not work properly and also the shower did not work properly. The beds were comfortable. We purchased internet service and could not get it to work in our room, only on the balcony. After speaking with others on the beach that were at Dreams, I would say stay away from the Barcelo, even if you have to pay a bit more, it would be worth it. This place is showing it's age and I believe that they have limited staff.

We enjoyed our week in sunny Huatulco. The Barcelo was a good place to stay, it was very clean, very kid friendly and the food was good. The upgrade to the premium club was worth the extra $$ as we then had a beautiful ocean view and the actual premium club area was very popular with our 6 year old with the air hockey tables, and we liked the premium spirit brands and snacks that were available throughout the day. It was also nice and cool in there and a good break from the sun!
The pools were great, very clean and you could see the team working hard all day to make sure they stayed that way! The kids loved the slides and water slides and splash area and Carlos from the entertainment team was very nice with the kids. The kids didn't go to the kids club, but loved the Disney characters show.
Feeding the fish in the bay at 10am is a must do!
Huatulco is very hot though, not sure if we would do again with small kids!

Room Tip: Our upgraded ocean front room was at the very end of the building so we could access the beach easil...

We had an excellent vacation staying at the Barceló resort March 1st - 6th. The resort was clean, rooms were a bit aged but very clean, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The only thing holding me from giving this a 5 star review was the buffet food, it was OK.

The room: We paid for an ocean view room and ended up with an upgrade to a suite. The room was spacious and the view was priceless. We had a couple requests - i.e. refill the bar, towels, etc. Our requests were always answered in minutes. By far the best service I have ever received.

The food: The buffet food offered a limited selection. We have been to several all inclusive - I felt the buffet at Barceló was the weakest we had to date. We ate at the Spanish restaurant - I thought this was the best All Inclusive meal I have ever had. The steak restaurant was average.

The service: The staff was incredible. They worked with us on all requests and always went above and beyond. The couple we were traveling with ended up with a room far inferior to our upgrade suite. They mentioned to April that they were a bit disappointed - within 24 hours they we moved to a room closer to the ocean and were given two options.

We had never been to Huatulco. The weather was perfect (hot & sunny), the ocean was beautiful, snorkeling was top of the line, traffic was negligible. For a $4 taxi ride we could get to town in 5 minutes. The cities were small, clean and neat to see.

Our trip was excellent.
