“Great Property & Acapulco is my favorite overseas destination”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2014

We had a wonderful time in Acapulco and the Grand Mayan - June 15th through the 22nd. The property was clean, service staff were all very nice, even with our poor Spanish skills, we had no trouble communicating.

I did a ton of research on the Grand Mayan, but it is quite better than you read or see in any pictures or reviews. The only two complaints I would have is that the beds are very hard. My wife loved them, but it hurt my back. I think others asked for a pad that helped. I didn't bother since my wife was enjoying it.

The other complaint was in general, a negative and a positive. It was off-season while we were there, which made things quite sparse, so the lobby bar wasn't open. The golf course was in need of some major maintenance (and they still charged us near $200 us). Though this is a very minor complaint, as we really liked having it quiet and somewhat secluded. I'd come back in off-season in a second. The wifi is extremely slow and overpriced. Put a data plan on your phone if you want internet access.

Acapulco it's self is a real gem. Frankly, I was quite nervous after all I read about the crime there. We went on multiple guided tours throughout the city and the areas around it, via our amazing tour guide, Baldo. I never once experienced anything close to a concerning situation. Baldo came through on every "mini adventure" we asked of him. The beauty of the town is unparalleled to anything I had seen before. He is must if you want to experience the city.

You can contact Baldo at Baldo-work@hotmail.com

Room Tip: We had a room facing away from the pool. I really liked to sit outside and watch the thunderstorms.

We had read about the positive experiences many people had during their vacation Acapulco but we still wondered if it was as safe as we hoped. I am happy to say that my wife, 3 girls and I felt completely safe. The Grand Mayan rates as one of the nicest resorts that we've stayed at and we've stayed at many. The rooms were clean, no smells, no bugs. The dipping pool on the balcony was a nice touch. I enjoyed the golf course. We tried all the restaurants on the property and thought they were all good but as you would expect, the range from mid-range to high end on price. We were pleasantly surprised that the upscale prices were less than a comparable restaurant at home. Our driver, David Alcaraz drove us everywhere we wanted to go. He had great recommendations took us a great tour of Acapulco that you don't get with bus tours. We stayed the hotel just before Mexican vacation season starts. We were treated like royalty. A cool thing we learned from David about the Grand Mayan is they have a hospitality room for people who have later flight. We spent the afternoon at the pool, we later showered and changed clothes then flew out that evening. Thank you David and Gran Mayan Resort! If you like Cabo you will love Acapulco.

Room Tip: There was construction on the ocean side of the hotel. It wasn't really a bother but the inland...

We stayed at the Grand Mayan June 15-22 and it was awesome! The hotel was clean and gorgeous and the staff brought me fresh flowers for our room one day and Hershey's kisses every night. The grounds were under construction but the new pool opened a few days before we left and we got to enjoy that as well as the old pool. We also took the shuttle to the mayan palace twice to enjoy their pool and lazy river. We requested an ocean view before we arrived and they stated most likely we would get one, that didn't happen. We tried to check in early and were told that shouldn't be a problem either but we didn't get our room until 5:30 pm. After being up for over 24 hours that was the only glitch in our trip. We used Roberto Alarcon (robertoalrey@yahoocom.mx or from the US 011 521 744-421-9608) as our tour guide and he was definitely worth it! He picked us up from the airport and took us shopping for groceries as soon as we arrived. He is very personable, reliable, knowledgeable, and I highly recommend him if you don't speak Spanish!! He will take great care of you and you will leave Acapulco with a new friend.

The hotel itself was nice if you could look pass all the construction going on, and the terrible smell of sewer. Not my kind of resort. Iguana's walking around. Pool was ok. Beach lets not forget the beach, dirty and not swim able. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone. I couldn't comment on the rooms because my stay was at the Mayan Palace which the rooms were very clean. But overall I would give it a 3. Too noisey and too many children. Not good place for a couple.

My adult sons, their friends and I had a great family reunion at the Grand Mayan in Acapulco the first full week of June. We were treated exceptionally well by all of the staff from the moment we arrived until we left. Although we made many of our own meals in our full kitchens the food we ate at the resort was always top notch. We also had free shuttle rides and the use of a sister resort. We were surprised at how uncrowded it was and learned that it was because it was the rainy season. We loved the primarily night rains and found them refreshing after the drought conditions at home.
I have read negative reviews because of the construction going on of an on site pond. That did not bother us in the least. I have also read reviews of the dirty beach in front of the Grand Mayan. That was not our experience. It was much cleaner than many of the beaches where we live in the United States. Consider getting a driver/guide who is well known by the Grand Mayan staff. We found our driver from a previous Trip Advisor Grand Mayan review. Baldo Gomez 74-41-60-1604 baldo-work@hotmail.com He is great for airport pick up and departures providing door to door service from the Grand Mayan. He is superb for tours and goes out of his way to ensure that any tours which might be recommended by the Grand Mayan concierge be a terrific experience for you. Please don't let the rains or the construction keep you away from a vacation of a lifetime.

Room Tip: A view of either the city and mountains or the ocean is good especially on a higher floor like the 8...

We recently visited a Acapulco 6/2k14. We had the most amazing time. The accommodations and food was fabulous. Benjamin Alarcon was the absolutely phenomenal as our private tour guide and new found friend. His knowledge of the country and the city was exemplary! His dedication and professionalism and availability could not be matched. He even took us to the airport on our departure day at 4:30 am!!! I highly recommend Benjamin Alarcon if you ever visit Acapulco

We recently stayed at the Grand Mayan resort in Acapulco. We had a 2 bedroom suite that overlooked the golf course. If you get an ocean view right now, you'll end up with a view of an empty lake and lots of construction. I would wait for construction to be complete. It will be fabulous when done. A new pool area did open a day before we left (really about 4 or 5 pools on varying levels) that will be separated from some of the noise if you will be going this year. You can take a shuttle to the Grand Mayan Palace which has a wonderful pool and relaxing lazy river. They just don't have the beautiful ocean view from the pool area.

What made our trip fabulous though was hiring a driver/travel guide for the week. I would highly recommend Roberto Alarcon (robertoalrey@yahoocom.mx or from the US 011 521 744-421-9608.) He speaks very good English and is just so nice and very knowledgeable about Acapculco. He picked us up from the airport and dropped us by a store to pick up a few groceries for the room... he'll do this anytime you need a little shopping. His assistance through the week eased many of our worries about getting around in the city. He made dinner recommendations and then took care of the reservations. Roberto also took us on a city and ruins tour... both were excellent. Oh, and photos... We have so many good pictures from the week because Roberto was always thinking about the photo ops. Roberto definitely made our trip worthwhile. I couldn't imagine our week without him!
