“The Grand Mayan-The Best!”
Reviewed April 24, 2014

We were there last Feb and it was the best Valentine ever! The Concierge( Christo) was exceptional and so were the rest of the staff, more so because our taxi driver Francisco Javier Vargas(cell phone (044) 744 421 3553/local call 2-49-01-95) had an impeccable English and a great tourist guide !

We stayed at the Grand Mayan, Acapulco on April 4- 11th, 2014, the weather was perfect, and we had a wonderful time. To give you some perspective of the reviewers, we are 43 and 39 years old, and from the U.S./ midwest.

We were moved to an ocean view room after agreeing to do the sales presentation. It took some time out of day but it was worth having the view, especially since it was a corner room with more privacy. There was some construction going on but it didn't interfere with our stay and there was minimal noise factor. This may change, with time of construction, but will likely be less of an issue as time goes on, and the work switches over to interior work.

The pool with the view of the ocean was very relaxing. There were not a lot of people during our week, so we didn't have to get up early to reserve a chair with our towels every morning (which we have had to do at other resorts). The resort was approximately 40-50% occupied. We had a fabulous server at the pool named Sandra. She took excellent care of us. All of the staff members at the resort were friendly and very accommodating and have excellent English skills. Many of them knew us by name by the end of the week. Angel and Miguel were entertaining and fun at the pool and at the parties in Mondo in the evening. The food we ate at the resort was good but we ate most of our meals in our room after purchasing many items at Walmart. The gym/spa was the best we have ever experienced. We opted for a massage on the beach because it was cheaper but the steam room and hot tub were fabulous.

We had the pleasure of having Baldo as our tour guide during our stay. We contacted him before arriving and he picked us up at the airport with a cold cerveza waiting for us. We discussed with him our plans for the week and made plans for a trip to Walmart the next day and a city tour later in the week. We had a great day with him touring the city with the highlights being the Chapel of Peace and the afternoon show of the cliff divers. We also did some shopping and had an authentic Mexican lunch. Later in the week we made plans with him for a dinner out. We had a fabulous meal at Tony's Asian Bistro. It had a fabulous view of the city and everything we had to eat was exceptional. The wait staff was friendly and I would highly recommend this place. The cost for the two of us was approximately $100 US dollars.

At the end of stay Baldo took us back to the airport. We will definitely return to Acapulco and use the services of Baldo. He can be reached at baldo-work@hotmail.com. His vehicle was always clean and we felt safe and comfortable with him and where he was taking us. Acapulco is a beautiful city with many things to offer. We always felt safe, secure, and comfortable with Baldo. He is an excellent and safe driver as well.

Room Tip: If you do the sales presentation you can be upgraded to an ocean view room.

We just returned from a relaxing week at the Grand Mayan Acapulco. The grounds of the resort were immaculate and the rooms themselves were stunning; however, what really made the trip exceptional was Roberto. After reading some of the reviews on TripAdvisor, we decided to book our initial transportation from the airport to the hotel through Roberto. Roberto and his brother Benjamin were waiting for us as we left baggage claim and greeted us as if we were old family friends with a cold beer and his “Mexican Medicine” (i.e. tequila). Right out of the gate it’s evident that Robert wants you to relax and enjoy your vacation. He even re-arranged his schedule and went back to the airport to pick up my in-laws who had missed their connection and ended up taking a later flight. Customer Service thy name is Roberto.

Roberto works primary with customers who stay at the Grand Mayan and picked us up there several times throughout the week. We went on the City Tour one evening which consisted of a driving tour of Acapulco with stops interspersed throughout the way to include the Chapel of Peace, a locally owned silver shop, an outdoor market and a special stop to see a mural by the famous Diego Riveria. Our tour concluded with the cliff divers show. Roberto insured we had the best seats in the house and took us to a semiprivate outlook where we paid $4 USD per person to watch the show. Everything Roberto does can be tailored to your interests so if there is anything you want to do or see in Acapulco or the surrounding towns, all you have to do is ask.

Roberto seems to know everyone and everything in Acapulco. His restaurant recommendations were spot on and were all locally owned establishments ranging from a small outdoor café to a steak and seafood restaurant with a spectacular view of the sunset over the bay. We were oftentimes the only Americans in the restaurants; however, each place had menus in English and/or waiters who spoke English. It was great to be able to try the local cuisine without having to worry about choosing a restaurant. Every time Robert took us to a restaurant he would call ahead to make sure there was not only a table waiting for us but that our table would be the best in the house.

Roberto was always very quick to respond via phone and email. On our final night in Acapulco we decided at the last minute that we wanted to go to dinner at a place where we could watch the sunset. We sent Roberto an email at 5pm and by 5:30pm he was picking us up for a 6pm reservation he made at a fantastic spot.

Robert definitely made our trip to Acapulco memorable. He has perfected the balance between professionalism and charisma and is one of the best, if not the best, tour guide we’ve ever had. He offers a variety of services and all are reasonably priced. Transportation to and from the airport was approximately $40 each way for the four of us and $30 round-trip each time he picked us up from the hotel to go to dinner.

If you’re planning a trip to Acapulco, definitely contact Roberto. He can be reached by phone from the US at 011-521-774-421-9608 or via email at robertoalrey@yahoo.com.mx

Now for the actual resort - The Grand Mayan is actually made up of several properties across the resort grounds. The Mayan Palace is set back away from the beach but has a fabulous pool complete with a waterpark, lazy river and swim up bar. The Grand Mayan is beach front and has a smaller pool and snack bar to eat at during the day. They are adding onto the resort so there is quite a bit of construction going on throughout the day. While the noise didn’t bother us, the construction resulted in several of the restaurants and the main lobby bar being closed. There are daily activities both at the pool and each of the properties but there does not seem to be a centralized location that lists all activities so you have to keep your eyes open for the advertisements that they change daily in the elevators and on the grounds. Some events that occurred while we were there were a tequila tasting, mixology class and yoga on the beach.

The main restaurant had a daily breakfast buffet which was pricy. While the restaurants on the property were very good, if you desire variety, I would recommend calling Roberto. Even accounting for the cost of driving to and from the resort, the meal cost offsite is about the same.
It’s worth noting that although I have given this review a 5 stars this is based solely on our experience with Roberto. If I were reviewing the Grand Mayan separately it would more likely be 3.5-4 stars.

We had a lovely week at the Grand Mayan. The friendly service was beyond amazing. We were spoiled! Delicious meals at the onsite restaurant, complete with a sommelier Candido who not only knows his wine, but also tequila! Mayden, the concierge, was outstanding. She helped us so many times. Our room was gorgeous! We had a small swimming pool on the balcony, a giant bathtub in the room, a livingroom and a small kitchen. This was actually a one bedroom apartment with gorgeous views of the city lights. Everyone was so kind in Acapulco and it is totally SAFE to go there! Our timing was perfect as spring break was just beginning the day we left, so the place was nearly empty for our entire week. The ocean was warm, the beaches were empty and clean, the pool was huge. It was my boyfriend's birthday, so they actually delivered a piece of birthday cake to our room that evening -- no charge! We also had a very romantic dinner at Su Casa Restaurant, which is closer to downtown, up on a hill. Incredible food, the nicest people, safe, fun. I'd definitely go back! Great for couples or families.

Room Tip: Ocean front is best, but ours faced the city and it was terrific. I'd recommend getting an upgr...

Hotel was very nice, clean; safe beautiful golf course hotel is on the ocean excellent. No ocean view rooms for RCI members. Airport is less than 10 minutes from hotel; no transportation provided from Grand Mayan from the airport, taxis are there. Learn little Spanish before you come. No currency exchange at Grand Mayan, they will take US funds. Food at the hotel is very good reasonably priced i.e. $85.00 US for a family of 4. Walmart within five minutes. Not all activities listed on the amenities are available at the hotel. Wi-Fi is available for a cost, most us cell phones won’t work, so translation and currency exchange apps won’t work. Highly recommend calling Roberto Alarcon he is and excellent English speaking tour guide, he knows the entire area very well, safe shopping, food and tourist attractions. If there is something you are looking to do he will find it for you, and you will feel safe. Spent the entire day on a city tour, cliff divers, souvenir shops, food, it was great day, and he found a place for me to go parasailing, which was a plus, lots of great family pictures. He will pick your party up at the airport or hotel, has a Suburban from the USA call (011 521 744-4219608) or (011 521 744-1077163), or when in Acapulco call 044 744 4219608. Thanks again Roberto Alarcon

I researched as much as I could and decided to contact Sebastian Hernandez who runs a company acapulcoforall.com and I am so glad I did. We made some arrangements with him vía e-mail and were scheduled for airport transfers and Acalpuco Tour. Sebastian picked us up promptly at the airport that morning (we were coming from Mexico City), happily stopped for groceries (he helped me find some items), and waited very patiently while we checked in at the Grand Mayan. Then we went on Sebastian's Acapulco City Tour for the day. Sebastian's explanation of all the sites was superb. His English is excellent. He is such a friendly person, and very accommodating. We also hired Sebastian for airport transfer for all of our relatives who were also coming in for this family wedding. Contact Sebastian from his contact page doing a Google search under his site acapulcoforall.com.
The Grand Mayan is beautiful. The pool was actually WARM which is wonderful compared to other vacation destinations in Mexico. There were always plenty of chairs around the pool and on the beach...no need to reserve a spot by 7 am, as is the case in other destinations. We had a two bedroom suite (two separate bedrooms with king beds and a washroom in each, sharing the living room and kitchen), which was well-appointed and spotless. Hubby and I had one room, mother-in-law had the other room, and our two teens slept on the two couch/beds. It worked out very well. It was nice to have full kitchen, which we did use to save money on meals. The hotel was quiet and we had a good sleep. Curtains had blackout lining. Balcony was huge and even had a small splash pool. After seeing the hotels in the other zones, I was glad that we were a bit away in a quieter and cleaner area. I would definitely return to the Grand Mayan.
As far as tour guide, we would MOST definitely hire Sebastian again. He responds promptly to emails and will send you his full list of tours, which all look wonderfully interesting. We would love to take his other tours next time (this time we were busy with the wedding). I highly recommend Sebastian; you will love him.

Room Tip: Get your name on the list for an ocean view room.
