“Grande Mayan Acapulco”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

Clean and spacious. Pool and great lazy river are on beach front. Nice warm bathwater sea! Horse riding and quads available. For those used to Mayan properties this is also designed like an office park on the beltway, but is comfortable and functional. The self catering units are not as well appointed as the same units at Mayan Riviera in that the kitchen is smaller, with a half sized fridge and no oven, dishwasher or washer/dryer and without a kettle ( bring your own if you like tea). Our toaster, stove top and coffee maker were non functional on arrival but were replaced with working appliances immediately. Restaurants and bars are good but very overpriced (50% to 100%) by comparison with Acapulco city. Staff may be underpaid as heavy tipping is expected. The in house store is poor compared to Mayan Riviera. It is better to take a cab to Walmart when you arrive to get your food and drinks for the week. Entertainment is mostly after 9pm, adult oriented and centres on selling alcohol. The Mexican Fiesta is good value for money. Kids club is not as good as those found at all inclusive resorts. At booking ask for a sea facing unit otherwise you will be accomodated with a golf view. Excellent bay cruises run by Jerry Alonso (ask for him at reception or timeshare sales) and most wonderful custom and personalised Acapulco and regional tours and provided by Roberto Estrada at very reasonable prices. He knows everything about Guerero and Acapulco (ask for unit 8 at the concierge or call Roberto on 0447441225595 or04474419711. He also does airport pick up and drop off. Acapulco os a wonderful place which may be forgotten by the mainstream tourist industry.

Room Tip: Even numbers are sea facing. Odd numbers are Golf view. If you do not ask for sea facing at booking...

Hotel:
The Grand Mayan was more than we could have hoped for. Very nice hotel, extremely clean, and the staff made our stay there very welcoming. Everyone is willing to help, and there is not much of a language barrier at all from English to Spanish. The staff at Jade (Convenient Store on the Property) was also extremely helpful in helping us locate several items we were looking for. Cafe Del Lago was great for Breakfast and happy hour. I wasn't very impressed with the dinner selections though.

Transportation:
We opted for pre-arranging private transportation which did make a very big difference and got our vacation off to a great start. Our driver was waiting for us when we arrived at the airport with a smile and a sign with our name on it. We booked Sebastian Hernandez, online via his website acapulcoforall.com He responded right away. He drives a clean and comfortable Suburban, with an A/C that works extremely well for the 90ºF + in Acapulco weather.

To Do at The Grand Mayan:
We spent a lot of our time at the pool, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The staff there at the pool made it extremely easy for us to relax, and enjoy all of the services they had to offer. The food and drinks are outstanding! (Wife liked the Mud Slides, A Lot!! Ok, who am I kidding... I thought the Blue Hawaiian's weren't that bad either. LOL)

Side Adventures:
We took some side trips with Sebastian (Acapulcoforall.com) He was extremely knowledgable, and very friendly. He showed us things in Acapulco that I'm sure nobody else knows about. Highly recommend him for any side trips or sight seeing tours.

Wrapping It Up:
The Grand Mayan was just breath taking. The relaxing pool on the balcony was a very nice treat, after a full day at the pool under the hot Acapulco Sun. The maid service is extremely attentaive, and does a very nice job of keeping the room spotless. The Check-in/Check-Out staff made things flow flawlessly. Everyone working there was extremely helpful and friendly. The next time we're back in Acapulco, we will be staying at the Grand Mayan!!!

Once again we had a great trip to The Grand Mayan in Acapulco. We stayed there for a month and enjoyed every moment. The rooms have been refurbished look great and the staff is excellent. We also enjoy the pool with a great kids area at the Mayan Palace, just a few minutes by shuttle. We purchased the meal coupons for a good discount at their restaurants and enjoyed an evening at their beach party. There a variety of entertainment each evening . Three years ago we were introduced to David Alcaraz who is an a official taxi driver for The Grand Mayan, therefore he is able to pick up and drop off at the lobby. David not only picks us up from the airport, but takes us to the grocery store, restaurants and of course any tours we might go on. David's English is excellent, he is an experienced guide and we always have wonderful and safe time with him. His suburban fits 7 people. He arranged for my husband to join another group for a very reasonable priced fishing trip, he later took the fish to a restaurant so that later that evening we could all go and enjoy our catch prepared several ways by a talented chef at Casa la Nostra. You can email me to get his email address or ask at the taxi station at the Grand Mayan to locate him. We feel extremely safe in Acapulco and have been traveling there for 15 years. It has the most beautiful weather this time of year. The Grand Mayan is located in the Diamante area (very safe) which is 5 minutes from an upper scale shopping center, Walmart, Mega mart and several restaurants.

Beautiful setting and beautiful city. Good service.
Good breakfast. Lunch and dinners are Ok. Poor deserts.
But…
Hotel is poorly maintained (electrical cable poorly connected – cannot light certain lamps).
The problems were fixed by maintenance after we called them.
Strong smell of pollution all day long, but mostly at night.
Internet charges are very high (90$ per week) with very slow network during working hours.
Location: Swimming in the ocean in considered dangerous. If you want to swim in the ocean you need to take a taxi for about 20 minutes.
We had problems with hot waters. We had to call twice, and then it was fixed.
We had good service and guidance by Baldo Gomez (check out in google) he drove us around, took us from the airport and back and drove us to interesting places including the beautiful city of Taxco.
Acapulco is considered an area with relatively high crime. You can notice policemen with guns in different locations.
Overall we had a good time!

We just returned from our second experience staying at the Grand Mayan Acapulco. The two bedroom suite that we stayed in was immaculate, the daily maid service was always top notch. The bellmen were always very frinedly and accomodating. The poolside service in was always very prompt and courteous, We love to explore Acapulco so we almost always ate our suppers at different restaurants around Acapulco. A couple years ago while staying at the Mayan Palace we met a local taxi driver, Angel Flores, who as it turned out, has a son named Angel Flores who works at the Grand Mayan. Over the times we have visited Acapulco, he has given us multiple excellent recommendations regarding dining, and has always expressed his concern for our safety and has never taken us to any areas where there was ever any question. He not only has become our regular taxi driver in Acapulco, but he also made the restaurant reservations for us. His english speaking abilities are excellent and he has been extremely helpful in numerous situations where an interpretor was warranted. I highly recommend the Grand Mayan of Acapulco and I also highly recommend using the services of Angel Flores. He will even pick you up at the airport. His email address is angelinacapulco@gmail.com. His cell phone number in Mexico is 044.744.138.0593. From the USA you would need to dial 011.52.744.138.0593. We hope to be able to return to the Grand Mayan again next year and definitely will utilise Angel's services if we are in Acapulco.

When we told friends we were vacationing in Acapulco, they warned us it may not be safe. I searched online and read many news articles and was kind of apprehensive about going there. But, having just returned from there, I could say with absolute certainty that it is very safe. Not sure if there is a propaganda going on to make travelers stay away from there but not once during our one week stay in Feb. 2013, did we feel unsafe.
1. We exchanged into Grand Mayan with our timeshare and requested that we be in a high floor facing the ocean. They gave us a high floor but not oceanfront, which was ok with us. Check in was fast, the bell boys were very friendly and even though we checked in after midnight, they had our luggage up in minutes and another maintenance guy came and turned on our private pool in the balcony!
2. We had the breakfast buffet twice ( delicious, especially the make your own omelette ), the pasta night which was ok...the noodle are a little different than from U.S. Italian restaurants. The snack bar at the pool had great hamburgers and club sandwiches. Staff was always friendly and attentive. We did not experience fantastic food during our stay in the resort or the city but I guess you don't go to Acapulco for the food.
3. We did the 3 hour presentation for the timeshare. In return, we got 8 rounds of golf for $45 including green fees and club rentals and 10% off our food bill on the resort. Mayan golf course is relatively flat, slow greens but the conditions are not bad. You can choose not to have a caddie which we didn't. Rental clubs were a set of functional Cobras. Just to let you know what kind of golfers we are, my daughter shoots in the mid 80's and I shoot in high 80's to low 90's. Course was not busy at all and we finished 18 holes in 3.5 - 4 hours. Make sure you take your own gloves and golf balls, we bought NDX's for $45 at Walmart and footjoy gloves at the proshop for $26.
4. I had contacted Benjamin Alarcon the personal tour guide before our trip whose name I got from tripadvisor...he is absolutely the best. Very friendly, knowledgeable and really loves his city and country. He will go out of his way for you. For instance, I emailed him and told him we would arrive a little after midnight of Feb. 16th, and because he didn't quite understand me, he was there on the 15th midnight and when we didn't arrive, he came back on the 16th. Also, we are not travelers with a set schedule so even when I called him up 1/2 hour before to go to Walmart shopping, he was there, couple of hours before dinner, he made reservations for us and was there to take us. We did the city tour and the Tehuacalco tour with him and had a great time. He was always on time, his suburban was always neat and clean and he speaks great English. His prices were reasonable and comparable. We would highly recommend him to anyone and would definitely contact him again when we go back. We loved Acapulco the best out of Cancun, Mayan Riviera, Puerto Vallerta because of Benjamin, his tours and his knowledge of the city and the rich history.
5. The only reason I would not give the Grand Mayan a 5 star is for the musty smell in the rooms which in the tropics, it may not avoided. The maids cleaned our rooms everyday but turned our beds down only twice. The grounds are immaculate, beach and weather was beautiful and the $20 massages on the beach were heavenly.

The hotel is very nice - clean, comfortable, with all the amenities you need. We had a small problem on our first night when we realized our room was located right underneath the building's A/C unit (10th floor). It was really loud in our room, so we had to call to arrange for a different room. They were able to accommodate us, but it took 4 phone calls over the course of two days for that to happen. I expected better. Other than that hiccup, everything was great. Our new room was even facing the ocean. The beach by the hotel is nice, but we were a little turned off when we saw dogs and horses pooping in the ocean. Also, expect to be bothered very regularly by vendors on the beach.
This was our first trip to Acapulco, and what really made the trip memorable was our tour guide, Roberto Alarcon. He picked us up from the airport, brought us to the grocery store, gave us a complete Acapulco city tour, brought us to CiCi water park, and lastly brought us back to the airport for our flight home. He was very professional, very fun and friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and always punctual. I read many, many positive reviews of him and he definitely lived up to them. I wouldn't visit Acapulco again without contacting him first.
One last note is that the hotel seemed a little dead - most likely because of last minute cancellations due to the recent violence in the area. We did not at any point during our trip feel unsafe at all. Everyone was very nice and friendly, the hotel felt very secure, and we knew we were in good hands when Roberto drove us around. No need to worry at all!

Room Tip: Avoid the top floor near the elevator - you may end up with a very loud room due to the A/C unit up...
