We just finished a week in Todos Santos volunteering with the Tortugueros Las Playitas Conservation project. This non-profit is run by Francesca and German who rent out casitas to volunteers (like us). Fran and German were incredibly welcoming from the moment we arrived. For example they invited us to a dinner with all of the volunteers (who came from Ireland, Australia, Mexico and the US) the first night we arrived which helped build a lot of comaraderie. We then went through some training on how the turtle hathery worked and we were soon helping with a hatchling release on our first full day. From there we learned the other functions the volunteers perform, including: monitoring hatching at the greenhouse, patrolling for new nests, cleaning out hatched nests, data collection and introducing visitors to TLP's projects and answering a variety of questions about Sea Turtles. Volunteers can choose how much thay want or can participate in these activities. Since Fran and German run La Sirena's Eco-Tours we took advatage of Sea Kayaking/Snorkling, swimming with whale sharks and surfing lessons. All were amazing and highly recommended. This was an amazing trip for us and we hope to return as volunteers again.
