Casablanca
Ranked #7 of 16 Todos Santos B&B and Inns
Reviewed May 14, 2011

My wife and I recently completed a two week tour of Southern Baja Sur which included stops in Cabo, Todos Santos, La Paz, and Loreto. During our time in Todos Santos, we booked two nights at the Casablanca - a choice which turned out to be the best decision and best experience of our entire trip. I have traveled extensively in over fifteen countries around the world and I can honestly say of all my stay's at Hotels and B & B's throughout the years, Casablanca rates as one of the best, if not THE best experience i've had.

Getting to the Casablanca requires navigating off the main highway down a few miles of dusty, bumpy roads. When you finally reach the property you will find an modest, unassuming property perched on a cactus strewn hillside with views of the Pacific Ocean located about a mile below. The real treat begins with the warm and friendly welcome you will receive from Inn owners Isabella & Gabrielle who make you feel welcomed and cared for from the very beginning. Accommodations consist of a detached two story building separate from their home which includes an upstairs and downstairs unit. We had the upstairs unit which was super clean, comfortable and nicely appointed with thoughtful touches such as a small library of select books, tourist maps, and information about the area.

During our first evening at the property - Isabella inquired about our preferences for coffee and tea in the morning and what time we preferred to have breakfast. When we awoke the next day, fresh coffee had already quietly been delivered to our doorstep, with a sampling of amazing homemade biscotti and shortbread cookies. When we came downstairs for breakfast, an amazing experience awaited on the outdoor veranda. Homemade granola with fresh homemade yogurt, fresh squeezed tangerine juice, fresh homemade raspberry and marmalade jams with amazing homemade scones, and a massive platter of fresh fruit of Kiwi, Pineapple, Mango, Papaya, Starfruit, fresh picked raspberries and blueberries and on and on. As we sat down, we were served a cooked caramelized banana drizzled in honey served on a banana leaf. As if that were not enough - a homemade crab enchilada with spicy mole sauce and pineapple salsa followed. Quite simply it was a feast for a King and Queen - and this beats any Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton breakfast hands down.

On day two - we took advantage of an evening cooking class offered by Isabella who opened her home to us and made us feel like old friends. I thoroughly enjoyed learning some of the finer points of South American / Mexican cuisine from her - she has clearly mastered the art of cooking. I could go on and on about the cooking and food experience - an amazing dinner and an equally fabulous breakfast the following day, but you get the point.

The combination of warm, friendly hospitality and luxurious meals was truly a highlight of our trip. Thank you Isabella and Gabrielle and we hope to see you again real soon!

This is one of the most special places in the World, and staying here is one of your best choices you can do if you are traveling Baja California. I tell you, stay here, forget about everything, and when you remember there is something else, go and travel there like places arround, El Triunfo, Los Cabos, La Paz, etc. But you'll be back to your little quiet paradise & magic gardren at Casa Blanca; Isabel & Gabriel are top hosts & they will cover you with pristine attention. I bet that You would not find a better bed & breakfast in years.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Casablanca for the last three nights of a week in Baja California Sur, and it was absolutely incredible. I made the reservation based on reviews on TripAdvisor, and I'm so glad I did. We enjoy staying at small hotels and B&Bs when we travel, and Casablanca is one of the best.

We took a few wrong turns on our way there, but eventually found it, and were welcomed by Isabel and Gabriel with beer and snacks on the patio. They are so warm and welcoming. They told us about some restaurants and beaches in the area, all great recommendations. They also ask what time you would like to have breakfast. In the morning they put out a tray of coffee with homemade cookies for you to have before breakfast. Breakfast is served on their patio, which overlooks their beautiful garden and the Pacific Ocean. We saw woodpeckers and other birds each morning. Breakfast is not just one course...it is a feast! The meal begins with fresh fruit juice and a variety of tropical fruits, which for us included amazingly sweet mangos and caramelized bananas drizzled with honey and cinnamon...and fresh yogurt with homemade granola...then a freshly baked something...on our first morning it was scones, with two kinds of homemade preserves...coffee drinks are made to order...then the savory course...the first day it was baklava with mushrooms with cheese, and asparagus wrapped in pancetta. My boyfriend and I agreed the breakfasts at Casablanca were probably the most amazing we've ever had. And in such a gorgeous setting, with such wonderful hosts, we felt incredibly pampered. After breakfast Isabel gave us a tour of the garden, and showed us the dried chiles she was preparing for the enchilada sauce for the next day's breakfast, which also proved to be amazing. Mmm...that sauce! The last day our baked something was warm brioche filled with chocolate...scrumptious!

We stayed in the Tomillo suite, which is upstairs and overlooks a valley of palm trees. The suite is spacious, beautifully decorated, with a comfortable king bed. There is wifi, a yoga mat and mosquito repellent are provided too. The patio has a hammock from which you can see the Pacific Ocean in the distance. It is a great place to relax with a book.

It was our first time visiting Todos Santos, and we liked staying just a bit outside the town. The drive to the beach and into town takes just a few minutes. One day we rode bikes from Casablanca into town, then to the beach on the other side of town. It was a great way to see the area. We also drove to Playa Las Palmas one day, and Isabel gave us an umbrella and beach mat to use, which was great.

This was one of the nicest places we've stayed at, and we definitely plan to return. Isabel and Gabriel were such kind and thoughtful hosts. We wish we were still there!

Gabriel and Isabel were warm and friendly hosts. They made us feel at home with their hospitality and scrumptious breakfasts served in their beautiful home overlooking the Pacific. Isabel prepared exquisite breakfasts with emphasis not only on taste but on presentation. Her attention to detail added to the over all experience of the meals that we enjoyed while listening to the waves crash on the beach below. One night she prepared a four course dinner for us which was delicious. Our room was spacious, clean and relaxing. Our hosts allowed us to use their computer, watch their TV (Packers vs. Bears), and provided us with beach towels and an umbrella. We will definitely return to Casablanca when we return to Todo Santos.

Our stay in Casablanca has left us full of magic memories. The view from our room was fantastic, The place is quiet and clean and located just 5 minutes away from the beach where we saw whales as close as 20 feet away from where we were standing! Isabel and Gabriel are great hosts. They gave us very useful tips on the best places where to go. We already miss Isabel's breakfast and the " Margaritas" that Don Gabriel prepared for us (the best Margarita I've had in my life). We left Casablanca feeling relaxed and renewed. It is the perfect place to escape from the winter blues.

If you've never been to the Todos Santos area, a warning: a car is a must around here. You can't just park yourself down and enjoy all the area offers, you have to get around and a set of wheels are ideal, if not necessary, for full enjoyment. There really are no beachfront properties close to town and the Casablanca is just a short stroll down to Playa La Poza and then you realize that the lack of beachfront hotels and resorts is what makes this place so special. The beaches are spectacular and majestic in scope and beauty. From the Casablanca's perch, you have wonderful views of the Pacific in the distant West and the rooftops of Todos Santos and the Sierra Laguna Mountains to the East. The Casablanca itself is set within the Barrio La Poza. Your neighbours include beautiful homes, locally and foreign owned, and shabbier residences, but no need to worry- This is not the "Mexico" you read about in newspapers in North America. This is small town living with all the charm long gone in most places in Canada and the U.S. It's just a warning so you know what to expect, and you are not disappointed, as you are driving along an unpaved road to what seems like nowhere in particular. Keep going, the final destination is well worth the effort-Casablanca Bed and Breakfast. From the moment you see your home for the next several days, you will know you made the right choice. And just wait til you meet Isabel and Gabriel; innkeepers at the start, and close friends by the end of your stay. They are the real jewel of this place. You think you may know good service. You may have stayed at luxury 5-star hotels and resorts, as i have, and expect good service when travelling but Isabel and Gabriel take it to a whole other level. They are wonderful people first, and great innkeepers second.
The Casablanca itself is very beautiful, with lush gardens and beautiful vistas. We stayed in the Tomillo Suite and enjoyed it fully. Great shower with sunlight filtering in the mornings and wonderful views to the mountains from the bedroom and hammock. A great night's sleep is guaranteed on the very comfortable bed and you wont miss the lack of A/C as the evenings can get quite cool; perfect for a restful night's slumber.
Well, how long have i gone without mentioning the food? I've been keeping you in suspense. You wont be disappointed, everything you've read and heard of the wonderful food prepared by Isabel is all true. She takes care of all the minor details, which to quote Mies van der Rohe-"God is in the details", makes it a true event. Bring the cameras to the breakfast table, you don't want to miss it. The presentation is spectacular with fine china and french silver, at breakfast! But don't get the wrong idea, it is not stuffy at all, just decadent in a relaxed way. We got to watch humpback whales spouting in the distance from the breakfast table while enjoying a homemade breakfast. What can be better than that? And by homemade, i mean everything made from scratch with only quality ingredients. You can see Isabel going at it in the kitchen and realize the passion they have for running the Casablanca.
Do yourself a favour and make your way there and say a "Buenos Dias!" for us, Ellina and Alessandro in Toronto,Canada. We can't wait to go back for a longer stay.

I loved staying here and when I need something calming to think about, I close my eyes and picture Casablanca B&B. Our room, the Tomillo Suite, was large and very comfortable. The rooms are located in a building separate from the main house, but we initially felt nervous that we were essentially houseguests in the house of people we really didn't know. Within only a few hours, we felt like we were long-lost family. Isabel and Gabriel know exactly how to appear just when you need them and then *poof* you you are in your own, private oasis. The only mistake I think we made when we stayed there was to have Isabel cook for us the first night we were there. She is such an excellent, inspired chef that I didn't want to eat anywhere else the rest of our stay. We tried other restaurants around town that came highly recommended, but we always ended up saying "That was really good, but Isabel's food - no matter what she cooks - is better..." Incidentally, the bed in the Tomillo Suite was hands down the most comfortable bed I have slept in, save my own.
