This is the first time I stayed at a City Express as well as my first time staying overnight at Tijuana, MX. I was not sure what to expect, but in general I was thinking to see a hotel with services and accommodations similar to a basic hotel in USA. There are a few things that are probably uncommon as compared to a hotel in USA, for instance City Express wants the guest to pay for the entire stay ahead of time rather than at check out, and the complementary toiletries provided are limited to just bar soap and shampoo. Any additional toiletries such as conditioner, lotion, mouth wash, etc. may be available at a general vending machine located at the hotel lobby or will have to be purchased at a store.
The hotel staff is very friendly and is genuinely willing to help and make things right for the guest.
Some value times include a continental breakfast (which feature a "hot" food item such as eggs,an assortment of fruits, cold cuts, white and whole wheat bread, cereals, juice, milk, coffee, and tea), and a "complimentary" transportation shuttle that will take you to most locations withing a 10 km radius. The shuttle needs to be schedule ahead of time, and is available based on the daily schedule. The driver is quite friendly and helpful, and a good tip is expected in every trip. In my view I was much more comfortable using the hotel shuttle than a random taxi as I was told some taxis are underground (while they may look legitimate) and i could result in trouble.
The single rooms are very basic and small, and while the suits are larger and more comfortable, they have the same bed size as a single room. But the suits include a fridge, microwave oven, a coffee maker (one needs to buy the coffee somewhere as it is not available at the hotel), and a wet bar area with cabinets to store food items or else. Finally, the suits have a larger desk area and include a sofa.
The hotel cleanliness is good in general, but it may vary depending on who is the person that does the room. The friendly staff will make things right is anything is reported out of place, so no complains.
If you are expecting to find an iron and an ironing table in your room, be prepared to ask for one as the rooms do not include one as a default. You will not find a clock / radio either, but a wake up call may be requested from the room phone.
Luckily, this hotel is right across the Macro Plaza, which is a medium size shopping center that features several local and USA chain restaurants, a decent cinema, several stores, and a Wal Mart. There is a bridge about 100 meters from the hotel that can safely take you to the Macro Plaza, or you can shortcut by crossing the street right in front of the hotel (at your own risk).
Finally, I highly recommend joining the City Premios loyalty program as it has some extra perks such as access to the free cocktails during Wednesdays and Thursday nights at the lobby, late check out (4 PM), better room rates, and access to ear free nights or exchange points for gift cards or other items.
I will definitely stay at this City Express again!
