“Do not rent here.”
Reviewed November 15, 2013 via mobile

Do not rent here. Renters do not have privileges. They can not use a certain pool, can not use exercise room.
I you own, then it is ok.
Sometimes especially during the summer it is crowded.
Imagine one pool for renters and many people here.
Rosarito is wonderful and inexpensive but if you are on vacation, stay at a hotel where you can have privileges.

K-38 (kilometer marker 38 on Highway 1 in Baja California) is a famous surf spot in Baja California, Mexico, south of Rosarito Beach.
Such a nice surprise to find that Club Marena is right on the cliff above it. Even if you don't surf, you can see the little surf groms from your balcony charging the point break. Or while away your afternoon watching the tide change and the waves break on the reef.
If you DO surf, you will find pathways right down the cliffs for easy entry to the ocean, short distances to paddle for sets of clean, right-breaking waves.
This is a very quiet, beautifully manicured, tranquil property. The guards may give off the air of being stern but they are politely vigilant in keeping out the riff-raff and the making sure the residents are undisturbed. I suspect more than one surfer who's staying down the road has tried for a quick dip in the hot tub at the end of a sesh, and gotten a hasty eviction.
This is a safe, well-guarded condo community where local owners rent out their condos. You can't really walk into an office and get a room as if it were a hotel. Best to reserve ahead with an owner.
Club Marena websites and vacation rentals by owners sites will allow you to shop for what you want. We got a 1000 square foot beautifully appointed one-bedroom condo for $75 a night !
Although we packed some supplies and food to avoid a trek to a grocery store (highly recommended), this was one of the most well-supplied places ever. Truly someone's home.
Espresso machine? Check. Wireless? Check. Herbs and spices? Check. Every kitchen appliance, utensil and pan/bowl/dish you could ever need to cook with ? Check.
There are comfortable leather couches and a library of DVD movies. Lounge chairs and a gas grill on the patio for cookouts. Plenty of clean, fluffy towels and a generous bedroom tucked in the back. This is the kind of space and luxury you might get in an American hotel for >$300 a night. Made me want to live here ! Still trying to figure out how to do that.
Within three miles north of Club Marena is the fishing village of Popotla and Fox Studios-Baja, where Titanic was filmed and where the Black Pearl from "Pirates of the Caribbean" is moored now. The road down to Popotla is immediately at the south end of Fox Studios, a dirt road down to the beach. Here you can have a fresh seafood lunch, Baja-style or buy a fat fish to take back for the grill. There are no signs pointing the way to this little gem from the road.
At 36.5 km, you will find Paradise Cove Tiki Bar. Live music on the weekends and outstanding Hawaiian/ Asian fusion, surfboards hanging from the ceiling. The San Diego owners run a meticulous kitchen and great sports bar. Many restaurants are closed on Tuesdays down here.
Both north and south along the coast road from Club Marena are lots of shopping opportunities--garden sculpture, ceramics, clay pots. If you want a 10 ft tall dinosaur for the back yard, there was even one of those. I liked the great choice of sun faces in all the shops. The Rosarito Beach Hotel has a little shopping mall connected to both the hotel grounds and the sidewalk outside.
A couple of blocks north of the hotel is a street with beach access and the Bombay Restaurant. Never went inside but found their bar on the beach. Plastic tables under little tents for shade, attentive service (keep the margaritas coming, senor !) and people riding horses on the beach at sunset. They will bring you dinner from the restaurant out to the beach--decent Mexican food with plenty of seafood choices. Guacomole was outstanding and obviously made fresh as it was ordered.
Fortunately at sundown, the beach vendors go home, but be prepared to have musicians and jewelry/souvenir salesman showing you their wares.
Or, you might never leave your room at Club Marena except to walk the gardens or sit in the jacuzzi on the cliff above crashing waves. I WILL be going back. A great bargain and a luxurious getaway.

Room Tip: Vacation rentals by owner on a Club Marena search will let you look at pictures and details of the c...

If you are planning on renting a condo for a few days or planing a little vacation in Rosarito, do not stay at Club Marena. They treat renters like second class citizens. The people (especially the managers and guards) are not very friendly with renters. They denny renters access to the main pool and forbid them to do certain things which owners are allowed. Security guards are also very bothersome with renters. They follow renters where ever they go, depriving them of their privacy.

I personally had a horrible experience at that place and would not want anyone else that is looking for a pleasant weekend to go through the same thing.

I live at Club Marena, and I noticed that some reviewers seem to see Club Marena as a hotel; it definitely is not. All condos, without exception, are owned by individual owners. Some of those owners list their condos with the office at Club Marena for rentals; some owners do not list with the office, but do list with other agents who handle rentals.

When a renter experiences difficulty with a unit, depending on the nature of the problem, the office is often not equipped to handle the maintenance issue. If another rental agent was used, that is even more likely to be true. Owners are not on site (after all, you are renting their units, so of course, they are elsewhere), so they are not in a position to handle maintenance issues either.

The staff at Club Marena is excellent, and repair issues can usually be dealt with, and the owner will be billed. However, renters need to understand that all these workers have other jobs that they are assigned to on the property. Doing maintenance work for individual units is not part of their regular work day; it is a task that must be "inserted" as time is available.

In the same vein, the housekeepers who do the cleaning are generally hired by the owners. They are not present "on property." The office does have housekeepers they use routinely, but they are not present "on property" either. They are independent contractors who come on an individual basis for cleaning. There are no housekeepers available after they have cleaned a unit.

Knowing these details will perhaps help you understand why any requests for service/maintenance are not met in the way they would be in a hotel.

Room Tip: Club Marena has a variety of units. 1. The villas--townhouse type units. All are "ground lev...

Just had a two night stay at Club Marena. Beautifully lanscaped grounds and super nice condos. The location is awesome with our own private point break out in front. My only complaint was that I couldn't go straight from the surf into the hot tub as they don't allow wetsuits in the pool. Over all a great place to stay in Baja Norte(if you got the $$$).

Northern Baja is definitely a gem, and Club Marena is a diamond among gems. The view is breathtaking from most of the condos, and this particular spot at KM38.5 is THE spot to surf, or to watch the surfers, and to soak up the sun which shines more often with less fog due to the geography of this little point when compared to other places north and south of here. It is close enough to Rosarito to hit the great restauraunts, the mall, shopping, etc., yet still out of town to where it is much quieter. Northern Baja feels safe in general despite the U.S. media sensationalism, but Club Marena feels safe x10 with the gated entrance, the 24/7 security guards that are always visible. The units are gorgeous and well done. Everywhere I went in and around Rosarito, I would hear the comment concerning Club Marena, "oh, that is the best (or one of the best) places in northern Baja"...

Room Tip: All rooms are good, but we like the ones further out on the point facing south with protection from...

Just got back from a 4 day stay at Club Marena with my husband and our 9 yr old. I think it's been said that it's pretty awesome, but I did want to add that the property is protected from the wind because of the way the land/ocean sort of "jut out". That is actually a really big plus when you start seeing that staying at some other places means that you are sort of wind blown all of the time. Just go to Rosarito/Ensenada!
