We discovered this gem in 2013 while staying at Las Gaviotas for a week. Our six-year-old was having a bad night and didn't want to eat anywhere, so we tried Ollie's because it was close and pizza is always a favorite. The owner saw that she was grumpy, and the next thing we knew he'd snuck a chef's hat on her from behind. They took her to the open kitchen and she was in heaven as a kitchen assistant who got to build our pies. We ended up eating here for three of our eight dinners in Mexico.
This year, we brought some friends with kids. I am always cautious about overselling a restaurant experience to people out of fear that it won't live up to expectations. But, they did it again. They weren't busy, and invited the two seven-year-olds to don chef caps and join them in the kitchen again. The kids had a great time and the adults loved that they were occupied and enjoying themselves.
Now, the food is truly excellent. I don't know that I've had a better pizza from any restaurant in San Diego. Our favorite spots at home (Luigi, Brooklyn, Lefty's, Pizza Nova) all make really good pies...but we like Ollie's better. There's a lot of variety (try the Onion Gorgonzola!), the table apps are great (mozzarella for the kids, asiago and stuffed olives for the adults), and the wine list is made up of excellent and award-winning wines from the Valle Guadalupe. On top of this, the service is outstanding! Both of the cooks are warm and friendly, the wait staff couldn't be nicer, and the owner is always stopping by the tables to make sure that you are enjoying yourselves.
The thing that put it over the top for us on this trip is that our friends were celebrating their anniversary. Without any prompting, the wait staff and owner marched to our table with a complimentary dessert pizza and singing a really funny and sweet ad hoc Happy Anniversary song.
In short, we had a great time and would recommend Ollie's to everyone.
